The Scottish Rite of the Freemasons appears to have been organized in the United States in 1801. It offers higher Degrees to a Master Mason (the third and highest of the traditional degrees, and as far as he can go in his Blue Lodge). The Scottish Rite is open to Jews and others. The Elks Club Band and their majorette, Gloria Ellexson, posed next to the Elks Temple before leaving for Cleveland, Ohio, in July of 1949 for the Elks National Convention. The band, under the direction of L.R. Grass, had been the 1948 state champions and Miss Ellexson was the state champion majorette. The band performed at the convention in Ohio, and Gloria, a student at the College of Puget Sound, was named the 1949 National Champion Drum Majorette. (TNT, 7/6/1949, p.10)

The Tacoma Art League sponsored the 17th annual South & West art exhibit in the College of Puget Sound's Jones Hall beginning on April 3, 1957. 64 entries were accepted out of the 204 submitted. Robert Feasley, C.P.S. art instructor, won "Best of Show" for his oil "City Night." First prize in watercolors went to Ruth Babbit for her "Riot." Matthew Fontana received a visit from two of his boyhood friends on January 5, 1956, Pat (left) and Mike McMurtry, while he was confined to his hospital bed at Pierce County Hospital. Fontana had contracted spino-bulbar polio, and had been at the hospital since Sept. of 1955. The McMurtry brothers were in town for the 8th Annual Tacoma Golden Gloves Tournament, scheduled to be held at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Pi Beta Phi alumnae pose for a publicity picture on October 26, 1955, at the home of Audrey (Mrs. Stanley) King. Mrs. Dean Hackett, Mrs. King, and Mrs. Robert Pauley, members of the Inez Smith Soule Alumnae Club, display handicrafts of a handmade broom, baby clothing, basket, toy, ceramic doll and place mat. These items were made in the Appalachian region and would be sold at the annual Settlement School tea and proceeds then forwarded to the Gatlinburg, Tennessee school, to help maintain the school in that remote region. Twins Melody and Carol Steen, members of the Sheridan School Camp Fire Girls unit, were supplied in January of 1956 with boxes of mints for the eighth annual club fund raiser. The girls sold boxes of candy throughout the month of February. Mount Rainier Council's seventh annual Scout Jamboree, held in the College of Puget Sound's Fieldhouse May 4-5, 1956, included more than 100 colorful booths staffed by Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. One particular exhibit featured Scouts posing in uniform with a sombrero-clad donkey in front of a wall decorated with Boys Life magazines. Boys Life is a periodical published by the Boy Scouts. The Jamboree also had demonstrations of scouting skills presented by various Pierce County troops. Over 5,000 area scouts were in attendance. Ticket sale proceeds aided 138 Boy Scout and Explorer troops to purchase camping equipment, 88 Cub Scout troops to purchase equipment and training materials and the development of Camp Hahobas on Kitsap Peninsula, an overnight scout camp. Tacoma Rescue Mission's Prayer Room. Providing a quiet place for study and reflection, this room has pews on either side of the room for seating. The Rescue Mission had been at this address since 1940, gradually buying up surrounding buildings. The 1956 remodel made the combined buildings appear as one. In 1956, the mission operated on a budget of $25,000 annually plus donations. (TNT 1/1/1956)

Julia C. Williams Orthopedic Guild square dance committee. The trio were planning the annual square dance called "Roundup Daze" to be held June 30,1956 at the Tacoma Armory. Proceeds from the $.75 admission would go to the Mary Bridge Childrens' Hospital. The poster entreats "We invite you to dance- and help some child to walk." John Rudy, member of the Young Men's Business Club and longtime head pro at Fircrest Golf Course, is apparently giving a lesson to a young lady on May 29, 1953. He is carefully positioning the head of the club directly behind the ball. She appears to be getting ready to putt the ball so the correct placement of the club and a proper stance would be necessary. The upper putting green just outside the clubhouse was said to be one of the best practice putting greens in the Pacific Northwest. It was eliminated when the current clubhouse was built in 1995. Chi Omega alumnae group at the New Yorker Cafe. The national sorority of Chi Omega added a new chapter at the College of Puget Sound in October of 1953. It was the 115th chapter of the sorority, founded April 5, 1895 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The day began with the initiation of 75 collegiate and alumnae members of the local group Delta Alpha Gamma into the Tau Epsilon chapter of Chi Omega. The initiation ceremony was held at the Tacoma Lawn & Tennis Club. The celebration concluded with a formal banquet held at the New Yorker Cafe for the initiates, alumnae and out of town members. In December, 1953 four officers of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Tacoma Aerie #3, put the finishing touches on the enormous tree that was to be the center of attention at the Eagle's annual Christmas party for children. The tree stands on a corner of the stage at the Eagle Temple at 1305-07 Fawcett Ave. Watching from the foot of the stage are (l to r) Bob West, secretary, and Frank M. Kellogg, president. Camp Fire Girls preparing for upcoming summer fun camping out under the stars. They are practicing camping techniques right in the comfort of their home. One of the items being practiced is the proper tucking in procedure for a sleeping bag. Mrs. Ralph Anderson puts away the dinner dishes while Mary Lynn Anderson, a Camp Fire Girl from Mason School, tucks her sister Kris, a Blue Bird, into her sleeping bag. Mrs. Anderson was the sponsor for the Blue Bird group and the chairman of the booth and organizational sale of chocolate mints. Daughters of the Nile, group of 24 plus 6 dancers. The Zora Temple of the Daughters of the Nile had scheduled their winter ceremonial for Jan. 9th, Saturday afternoon, at 2:00p.m. It was held in the Gothic Room of the Masonic Temple. The room was decorated with oriental lamps and rugs, furnished by Harry Kirishian for the event. A large class of candidates was initiated. Oriental dancers presented a ceremonial dance with the patrol as escort and the Nile Chorus furnished music. The event was followed by a banquet in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. Elks club members dressed as policemen look on in amusement as a "can-can girl", complete with garter and bonnet, demonstrates a bit of the famous dance during the Elks club 1954 Extravaganza. The man in bow tie is believed to be Max Frolic, well-known old-time vaudevillian entertainer. Mr. Frolic directed the Elks Extravaganza for several years. The Extravaganza generally ran for two nights; the first night was for members only and always ensured a full house, while the second night was for ladies only. (TNT 4-1-54, B-11)

Elks club members participated with high spirits when requested to do so during the annual Elks Club Extravaganzas held each spring. Humorous skits, song & dance, orchestral music were all part of the program. View of two members on stage; one is dressed in Scottish kilts while the other man has a ragmop hairstyle and keeps one foot on an uprooted stool. Deliberate or not, the warped candles on top of the piano certainly would have caught the audience's eye.

A very motley crew of entertainers pose on March 31, 1954, for the annual Elks club Extravaganza. "Uncle Sam", in the center, appears to be embracing representatives of various ethnic groups. This was probably the "United Nations Beauties", a big hit with the audience. The Elks Extravaganza was always greeted with much anticipation and provided hours of hilarious entertainment for its members. (TNT 4-1-54, B-11)

Two carpenters are in the midst of finishing the interior of a new model home for the Tacoma Master Builders Association. They appear to be working in the living room portion of the home; a large brick fireplace has already been laid with cabinets and shelves adjacent. The Master Builders Association built model homes each year for the Parade of Homes, held in conjunction with National Home Week, and also constructed a model home for the Tacoma Home Show held in May of each year. The location of the Tacoma Home Show model was kept secret until the show opened; in 1954, S.L. Rowland Co. did the honors. (TNT 4-4-54, B-13)

May was a prime month for rhododendrons. The Tacoma Chapter, American Rhododendron Society held their sixth annual flower show on May 15-16, 1954, in the Bank of California lobby. Exhibitors were concerned that an early May 1st frost had damaged the supply of rhododendrons but the more than 100 varieties entered eased their fears. As in previous years, the bank lobby was landscaped with specimen plants as the background for entry exhibits; view of lobby filled with rhododendrons. This year it was decided that the flower show would be noncompetitive and no prizes awarded. (TNT 5-12-54, B-1, TNT 5-16-54, A-2)

The Tacoma Rhododendron Society held their sixth annual flower show May 8-9, 1954, in Normanna Hall. The public was invited to attend at no charge. The University of Washington Arboretum sent plants to display as well as the U.S. government's Ballard Canal Locks. The offerings from Tacoma growers included those plants grown specially in greenhouses. View taken of stage at Normanna Hall; stage is covered with rhodys with Maypole in center. Elks Club members read one of the many books collected on behalf of servicemen during their book collection drive on November 1, 1954. A sign behind the men indicates that "good current books" were wanted. The stacks of books seem to be a good sign that the collection drive was successful. Never Die the Dream, Requiem for a Redhead, and Upton Sinclair's A World to Win (1946) were just some of the donated books. By November 8, more than 3000 books were donated by the club's 5200 members. (TNT 11-8-54, p. 9)

Delta Delta Delta sorority sisters from the College of Puget Sound pose with completed pansy nosegays for the Pansy Ring Tea ceremonies. The tea would honor all senior women at the College, with special attention paid to engaged and recently married seniors. The third annual Pansy Ring Tea took place at the College of Puget Sound on May 15, 1955. It was sponsored by the active members and alumnae of the Phi Zeta chapter of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. The tea honors senior women and is a tradition of nearly all Tri Delta chapters in the United States and Canada. The tea featured a style show, climaxed by a bridal party.
