Tacoma's Own Quiz Kids pose on the Spanish steps at the Elks Lodge in October of 1942. The ninth graders from Mason Intermediate School had written and prepared a script that discussed the various agencies and functions of the War Chest of Tacoma. With the upcoming War Chest fund raiser, the students were available to speak at public functions. These young people have been chosen by the War Chest, a branch of the Community Chest, to represent their schools and to speak at fund raising functions throughout the community. V for Home and World Victory was the slogan of the War Chest of Tacoma, a branch of the Community Chest in 1942, during WWII. These boys and girls gave a spirited victory sign as they stood on the Spanish steps next to the Elks Club at 565 Broadway. Their spirit helped to get them chosen to represent their schools as speakers at community functions such as P.T.A. meetings and civic group luncheons. This group of churchwomen standing at the foot of the Spanish steps, near the Elks Lodge, have volunteered to prepare and serve lunches to workers in the War Chest fundraising campaign. They are standing on the steps at the entrance to the Elks Ballroom where the daily campaign report lunches will be served. The campaign is scheduled to begin October 19th. Gracie Hansen displays a press release at the Elks Club on March 7, 1962, for the Gracie Hansen Paradise, a Las Vegas-style show, to be featured at the Century 21 Exposition (Seattle's World Fair) in 1962. She had addressed the Tacoma Advertising Club at the Elks on "Century 21 After Dark." Behind her is a multi-sectional billboard with cut-outs of the Space Needle, a bottle of Almaden Rose champagne, and a dancing chorine holding a large apple. The concrete slab building that would house the "Night in Paradise", a 700-capacity theater/restaurant, later was given to King County and is now known as the Gracie Hansen Community Center in Ravensdale. Armed Forces Night at the Elks Club. On May 24, 1961, the Tacoma Elks Club hosted various members of the military to a formal dinner. Guests included both high ranking brass and younger uniformed men. Seated in rear of photograph are L-R John H. Anderson, former mayor of Tacoma, Major General William Train, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, and Robert Holder, Elks exalted ruler. The Washington State Restaurant Assn. held their annual luncheon at the Elks Club on October 15, 1958. The meal was prepared entirely by Chef James Osenton's class at the Tacoma Voctional School and served by the waitresses of Local #61. Names of those pictured can be found in the News Tribune's October 16, 1958, issue. October was deemed National Restaurant Month; the Washington State Restaurant Assn. traditionally had offered a free meal to the city's leaders to demonstrate the importance of restaurants to the area's economy. Corsages are worn by the incoming and outgoing officers of the American Legion Auxiliary on August 2, 1958, as they posed for a group portrait in the Elks Temple. The woman seated to the extreme right lacks a corsage but wears a ribbon and name tag labeled "Greetings from Tacoma." All the women are dressed in white and wear dark narrow sashes. Mrs. Everett Eaton of Battleground, was elected as new department president, succeeding Mrs. Frank S. Evans of Sedro Woolley. In addition, twelve new district auxiliary presidents were chosen. $74,000, the amount earned through the sale of veteran made paper poppies, was spent by the auxiliary for rehabilitation of the veterans. Each year the Elks Club made full use of members' musical and acting talents in the Elks Extravaganza. Members were not shy in performing before other members and invited guests; their costumes often were women's clothing and wigs. An unidentified beaming little girl clutched a reindeer made of balloons at the Elks Club 1956 Christmas Day party for children. Another balloon creature, a dog, faced the child from a chair. Each year the Elks Club sponsored a Christmas party for children; in 1956, 800 children were sent invitations to attend the party at the Elks Lodge at 565 Broadway. A Christmas tree, candy, nuts and fruit plus entertainment were provided. The girl in the photograph is wearing a pretty flowered dress and her hair is neatly parted and held back with a shell clasp. Washington State Restaurant Association; lunch at the Elks Club. These are members of the Culinary Alliance and Bartenders' Union, Local #61 and staff and students of Tacoma Vocational School that served and prepared the meal. The free meal was offered to over 500 business, labor and political leaders to kick off National Restaurant Month. The annual hospitality luncheon was intended to give a clear impression of the gigantic strides made each year by Tacoma area restaurants in the preparation and serving of food. Over 17 billion dollars would be spent nationally in restaurant meals in 1956. The lunch consisted of baked ham, candied sweet potatoes, string beans, green salad and Bartlett pear pie. This motley collection of characters was the entertainment at the Elks Club on March 28, 1928. "High Society, " "cooks," "hoboes" and "cops" all mixed easily together that evening. Tacoma's Elks Lodge presented seasonal "entertainment" where Elks polished their acting and musical skills for the benefit of fellow members.

Elks Temple. June, 1926, view of the Elks Temple as seen from Commerce Street. At this time, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174, had been at this location for 10 years. The elegant structure was one of Tacoma's showcases and its 64 Spanish steps, built to serve as a fire escape, were designed after the Scala di Spagna of Rome, steps that once led to the Spanish Embassy. The Tacoma Elks Lodge and Puyallup Lodge would be hosting the 1926 state Elks convention in Tacoma later in June. TPL-635; G17.1-046; BU-10,638 (TNT 6-17-26, 1-C)

Seven soldier members of the Salt Lake No. 85 Elks Lodge pose in front of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174 on August 16, 1918. They are wearing military uniforms with most carrying flags. A large sign is held by two Elks "warning" others to "Watch Your Girls We're From Salt Lake No. 85." The soldiers represented their lodge during the 14th annual Washington State Elks convention held in Tacoma during August of 1918. Visiting Elks. The Everett Elks Band pose on the famous Spanish Steps next to the Elks Lodge, 565 Broadway, on August 16, 1918. A service flag with "In God We Trust" is lofted up high in the background. There was one gold star included which signified the loss of an Elks member in war. The Everett band was one of several in town for the 14th annual Washington State Elks convention which had opened on August 15th.
