In January 1949 Annie Wright Seminary students would be traveling to Olympia where they would visit the Governor and the State government buildings. Annie Wright Seminary, Junior class play for the yearbook "The Shield." For their theatrical production, the AWS juniors presented Jean Cocteau's version of the Sophocles play "Antigone." "Antigone" is the story of a young girl who defies her uncle, the King, to bury the remains of her brother. The lead roles of Antigone and Ismene were played by Heather Spence and Dorthea Weiss. The play was produced on Saturday at 8:30p.m. in Keator Hall. The main characters can be seen standing in the center of what may be the curtain call, flanked by chorus members and sword carriers. Putting their best foot forward are thirteen young students from the Annie Wright Seminary. Dressed in seemingly patriotic colors, the little girls are all holding hands as they pose on the spacious grounds of the private school. The picture was taken on May 9, 1953, the occasion of May Day festivities, so the children may have been getting ready to put on a performance in front of the Queen, her court, alumnae and other guests.

Queen and her court. Annie Wright Seminary annually celebrated May Day festivities on the school's lawns. Erin Lombard of Yakima, seated with scepter, was the 1953 Queen of May. She and her court posed for a large group portrait on May 9, 1953. The little girls in white in the front row are from the kindergarten glass; they would act as heralds, flower girls, crown, scepter and train bearers. The older girls are members of the senior class and would serve as attendants to Queen Erin and her maid of honor, junior Marilyn Wotton of Puyallup. Third graders move in precision as they dance around the traditional May Pole in 1953 May Day festivities outside the ivy-covered halls of the Annie Wright Seminary. The May Queen, Erin Lombard, and her court and other spectators watch the intricate weaving. It had long been the custom to have the third grade class present the May Pole dance. Not only was a queen crowned in May Day festivities at Annie Wright Seminary, but guests and students were entertained by various musical programs. In 1953, a program of modern dance was presented under the direction of Nancy Jane Bare. These girls, dressed in costumes of America's pioneering past, may have been in the Middle School.

Several couples dance under a ceiling draped with crepe paper and balloons at the hop presented by the freshmen and sophomores annually for the upper grades at Annie Wright Seminary. This year's theme was an "Evening in Paris". Some of the girls have their dance cards strapped around their wrists.

Charles Wright School students are building a snow man and having a snowball fight at Annie Wright Seminary in January of 1952. The newly fallen snow has outlined the branches of trees and covered the ground. The Charles Wright School had been added as an annex to Annie Wright two years prior so that brothers of Annie Wright pupils could have a place to attend after the 1949 earthquake severely damaged Lowell School. There were seventeen boys in the Charles Wright class in 1952. In 1957 the Charles Wright Academy would be created on a 127-acre site near University Place. (1952 Shield)

Dagmar Quevli is surrounded by her nine attendants in the Great Hall of Annie Wright Seminary. She and Ensign Wayne Beale Knight were married August 31, 1952, in Raynor Chapel. Miss Eleanor Mills was maid of honor and Mrs. James Burkheimer of Seattle was matron of honor. Mirs. Kirby Torrence of Seattle lighted the candles. The six bridesmaids were Christie Scott, Elizabeth Ayrault, Donna Moore of Seattle, Joan Lein and Martha Dorsey, both of Spokane, and Jane Palmer. Annie Wright Seminary. Mr. Karl Weiss is pictured with two girls in the school library in November of 1951. He is explaining illustrations of Christ and Mary shown in a portfolio. Mr. Weiss taught civic and music classes at Annie Wright. The 1952 school yearbook, the "Shield," was dedicated to him in appreciation for all he had given to the students both spiritually and scholastically.

Paddock. An open house will be held after lunch. Annie Wright Seminary was named after the daughter of Charles B. Wright who had extensive business interests in Tacoma and the Northwest. The Right Reverend Stephen Fielding Bayne, Jr. in Raynor Chapel at Annie Wright Seminary. Photo taken for The Shield, Annie Wright Seminary's yearbook, 1950 issue. In 1959, in a surprise move, Rt. Rev. Bayne was elected to head the world wide, 40 million member Anglican Communion with headquarters in London. In a new position created for him, he would coordinate activities of 15 different autonomous churches, including the Episcopal Church of the United States. He would operate as spokesman and leader of the world organization, in hopes of unifying all of its diverse factions. Rt. Rev. Bayne had headed the diocese of Western Washington in Olympia for 12 years. At 52 years of age, Rt. Rev. Bayne had also previously served as a reporter on the Wall Street Journal, as a Navy chaplain and as the Chairman of the Department of Religion at Columbia University. A native of New York City, he was educated at Amherst, ordained in 1932 and consecrated as the Bishop of Olympia in 1947. He was well known as a speaker, famous for his wit and sense of humor. Activities at Annie Wright Seminary. In November of 1949, three students were photographed taking a break from studies in one of the large dormitory rooms at Annie Wright Seminary. One of the girls sits at a desk with a book open. Another student leans against one of the dressers in the room while sitting on the arm of an upholstered chair. The other girl sits on the end of her bed with stuffed animals. An Annie Wright banner is hung on the wall and there are also two bulletin boards hung on the walls. Annie Wright Seminary was a private school for girls, many of them boarding, which had been established in September of 1884.

Some of the hi-jinks of the annual Annie Wright Seminary's Dad's Day. Five upper class girls in matching dark blouses and white shorts and one brightly attired Dad perform a high kick routine to the delight of uniformed girls, their Dads and Headmistress Ruth Jenkins, at the bottom right of picture. Families were invited to the school for this special annual event and activities were planned for the students and their Dads.

Each year the students of Annie Wright Seminary held a May Day festival to welcome back the blooming life of spring to the cool and gray Northwest. The ceremony in 1959 was held on a bright, sunny May 9th with the air stirred by a stiff breeze. 1959 was a special year, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the school, which opened in 1884 with a class of 93 from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Since most of the upper class girls were directly involved in the pageant, the entertainment was usually provided by the lower and middle school classes. This group appears to be performing a folk dance, perhaps from the Netherlands. Some girls are dressed in full skirts with aprons and boxy bonnets, some are dressed as boys in knee length pants and vests.
