Half-brothers Sugar Ray Seales (l) and Dale Grant (r) assume a typical boxing pose in this October, 1973, studio portrait. Tacoma was well represented at the 1972 Olympic games by Mr. Seales who would become the sole American boxing gold medal winner. His younger brother, Dale Grant, also was a notable local boxer who was named the US Amateur Boxer of the Year in '72 for his outstanding record. Mr. Seales was born in the Virgin Islands in 1952 while his father was stationed at an Army post there. He became involved in the Tacoma Boys Club in Tacoma after moving here in 1965 and was coached for many years by Joe Clough. Mr. Clough would resign as Mr. Seales' manager in May of 1973 after his first seven victories as a professional. Bill Dickson would then manage Mr. Seales. Photograph ordered by Larry Morris.

Tacoma Twins baseball team. Tacoma's Twins were a minor league team affiliated with the Minnesota Twins. 1974 was the third year that the team was based in Tacoma. In November of 1926, the Stadium High School Tigers practice making a goal the hard way, as they try to push a brand new Nash Six Roadster with a football balanced on top. They found the Nash, with its brakes set, hard to budge. The first string Tigers are, left to right, Ned Simpson, "Red" Goble, Mel Black, Paul Anderson (at wheel), Glen Lawson, George Tibbets, Earm Hayden, Les Yansen, Jim DuPree, Bill Simpson, Alvin Shenckell and Joe Hansen. Elmer Lock sits behind the wheel of his midget racer in this photograph from June, 1936. In the 1930's, midget racers like this competed regularly under the arc lights of the Tacoma Speedway Royale at South 14th and Sprague. The races varied in length from 3 laps for a "helmet dash" to 30 for a class A "Main Event". (T. Times 06-01-1936 p.11)

ca. 1962. Portrait of young boxer in bare-fisted stance, ca. 1962. This is Denny Moyer, Portland middleweight. He was a former Tacoma Golden Gloves junior middle champion. Moyer would win an unanimous decision over former welterweight and middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson in a February 17, 1962, rematch at Madison Square Garden. The 22-year-old boxer had lost a previous decision to the 41-year-old Robinson. Moyer would gain the attention of the nation again when he fought welterweight champ, Emile Griffith, in a 10-round non-title event on August 18, 1962. He would lose to Griffith by a split decision in the nationally televised bout.(TNT 2-18-62, B-10, TNT 8-17-62, A-1, 8-19-62, A-1)

Eddie Taylor, second baseman and manager of the 1937 Tacoma Tigers baseball team, connected for a double in his first at bat against Vancouver in the second game of a double header on Sunday May 2, 1937. He was the first batter in the first inning of the second game against the Vancouver Maple Leafs. The wooden stadium at 1302 South Sprague Avenue was filled with a capacity crowd. The Tigers won the first game 3-1, but lost the second 10-5. (T. Times 5/3/1937, pg. 11)

W.E. ("Bill") Dalgleish of Tacoma was one of the leaders after the first day of competition, June 19, 1925, at the 27th annual Pacific Northwest Golf Association open tournament held at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club links. Mr. Dalgleish was the head pro at the site of the event. He would eventually finish at 309 strokes for the tournament, 14 behind the winner, Seattle pro Jack Hueston.
