On April 24, 1945, at Washington School, 3701 No. 27th St., Patsy Phillips (left) and Judy McMillan stood at attention while Ronnie Schermerhorn blew a salute on his trumpet for the World Security Conference to be held in San Francisco. Campfire Girls and Blue Birds throughout the nation took part in identical ceremonies designed to make the scouts think about what they most desired for the world and determine the part they could play to make those desires come true.The World Security Conference was one of the international meetings that led to the formation of the United Nations. C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Dissension was in the air on April 17, 1946, when approximately 50 students from Robert Gray Jr. High took to the streets to protest what they termed the "firing" of physical education teacher Victor Kovack by Principal Carroll A. Payne. The protest continued for 3 days, gathering up to 150 students demanding the removal of Principal Payne. When police forced the picketers from in front of the building, they paraded through the streets of South Tacoma. Kovack and Principal Payne had disagreed over the use of corporal punishment at the school, with Kovack opposing it. Students were advised that Mr. Kovack had been transferred, not fired, by the school district. After an investigation by the school board into the alleged physical punishments, Principal Payne was exonerated, but the regulations concerning corporal punishment in the schools were more clearly defined and published. Several groups at Stewart Junior High School, Mrs. Andres, Times. Stewart Junior High School held its eight annual May festival May 7, 1948. Queen Arlee Curtice is seated on a stool raised higher than the others who are seated on stools. The other young women are her posture duchesses. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948. Panhellenic Tea at Great Hall, Annie Wright, News Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Tacoma Panhellenic honored graduating senior high school girls and their mothers at their annual tea on April 24, 1948, at the Great Hall at Annie Wright. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. Manitou School group. A group portrait of one of the school classes at Manitou School. There are thirteen girls and sixteen boys.The School Board was faced with tough questions in 1911. How to provide for a school population that was increasing at the rate of nearly 1,000 new students per year? Voters approved a special levy on May 6, 1911, for several new elementary schools and a new high school. A portable was secured for the Manitou neighborhood and in September, Sara Cochrane began teaching the first three grades in the one-room building. The large Tudor Gothic design building at the bottom is Annie Wright Seminary, 827 Tacoma Avenue North, which opened at this address in 1924. Stadium High School was built in 1891, it was built in the French Chateau style and originally designed by architect A. B. Hewitt, architect Frederick Heath remodeled the building and changed it into the school. Stadium Bowl was built in 1909, it has been remodeled many times because of mudslides and weather damage. Annie Wright Seminary. 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 format. A view of the exterior of the buildings at Annie Wright. The school first opened in Tacoma in 1884. The facility moved to this location in 1924. The buildings were designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. The Tudor Gothic brick buildings are covered by ivy. The roofs are studded by dormers. Expansive grounds surround the buildings.
