Thirteen young women form a chorus line, modeling bathing suits and high heel shoes. They are participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest at Lincoln High School. These top entries will also win coveted "model" roles in the Music Department's upcoming original musical comedy "Of Men and Models." The production will be completely written and scored by Lincoln students. The story line revolves around a football hero and his teammates who inherit a Fifth Avenue dress shop and try to make it a success. From the writing on the blackboard, this night school class appears to be hard at work studying their prefixes. In October of 1939 over 1,700 adults took part in over 60 classes offered at Lincoln High School on Monday and Thursday nights. One of the purposes of the night school program was to help adult students catch up on basic educational tools, such as reading, writing and basic arithmetic. Pacific Lutheran College May Day festivities and dedication of new Library Building. Many people inspect library reading room. Ground was broken May 1, 1937 for the new library designed by E.J. Bresemann, of Heath, Gove and Bell, architects. With the construction of a new library in 1968, this building was remodeled and named Xavier Hall. (T. Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

On May 1, 1939, as the orchestra played "Pomp and Circumstance," eighteen senior girls gowned in pastel formals advanced bearing ribbons to form an aisle from Old Main to the May Queen throne. Queen Vivian Lunde, preceded by the ladies of her court, marched in procession.

A class in singing is being held at Central School in January of 1941. The instructor, on the right, plays the accompaniment on the accordion while the choir, in front, leads the singing. Singers in the choir are, front row, Donna Emeott, Janey Harris, Keuzo Moriguchi, David Gimlett, Fred Raphael, and Keiko Fugii. Second row: Stewart Gilbreath, Joyce Powers, Kay Swanson, Barbara Guilmette, Barbara Putnam and Carol Stratton. Musical instruction was a key feature at the school with training given in singing, rhythm, sight reading, piano, strings, band and orchestra instruments. In the 1940s, Tacoma's Central School had a strong emphasis on music. Instruction was given in singing, sight reading, piano and virtually all band and orchestra instruments. Joseph Lento, pictured with guitar in January of 1941, taught a class on how to play guitar, ukulele, and banjo. Every Monday morning at 8:30 his "pick string" students met in the school's basement playroom for an informal concert. Musicians usually numbered 20-25, while audiences could reach over 100. (T. Anderson Hall, built at a cost of $75,000 to house 40 women, was formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. The team included two African American players, Brennen King and Jess Brooks, unusual for the time. Jess Brooks was a 1932 graduate of Lincoln High School, where he was the first African American student to win the coveted Richard Graff award, for high scholastic achievement and athletic prowess.
