The exterior of "Old Main" at Pacific Lutheran College (later University) has been cleaned of ivy in 1950. In other years the administration building was covered thickly with ivy. Pacific Lutheran University was founded in 1890 by a group of mostly Norwegian Lutherans from the Puget Sound area. They were led by the Reverend Bjug Harstad, who became PLU's first president. Although founded as a university, the institution functioned primarily as an academy until 1918, when it closed for two years. It reopened as the two-year Pacific Lutheran College, after merging with Collumbia College, previously located in Everett. Spokane College merged with PLC in 1929. Four-year baccalaureate degrees were first offered in education in 1939 and in the liberal arts in 1941. TPL-9332

The fourteen student members of the College of Puget Sound Choral Readers perform in recital in Jones Hall Auditorium. The group, under the direction of Martha Pearl Jones, performed a diversified program of ensemble verse readings. Members were Herb Stark, leader, Gloria Nelson, assistant leader, Doug Cullen, Ellen Davenport, Mary Kincheloe, Helen Pearson, Kaye Klopfenstein, Mel Gidley, William Gianelli, Dale Lee, David Stell, Fern McCullough, Claudia Zediker and Homer Johnson. Gaily decorated box lunches for two are auctioned off at the annual old fashioned Box Lunch Social in the main lounge of the Student Union building at Pacific Lutheran College. The event where coeds prepare elaborately designed containers with meals to be purchased by and consumed with the highest collegiate bidder was sponsored by the Lutheran Students Association with proceeds going to charity.

Dr. Seth Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and bronze dedication plaque hung mid February 1950 on the front exterior wall of the Student Union Building. The plaque cites the donors that made the construction of the building possible. The Student Union Building housed many of the students' activities and included such facilities as the main auditorium, organ practice rooms, college bookstore, general lounge, coffee shop and several offices. Dr. Eastvold's administration, 1943-1962, was characterized by capital expansion. (TNT 2-26-1950 A-10)

On February 6, 1950, Pacific Lutheran College students gaily tossed their shoes off at the door to enjoy the Stocking Shuffle Dance in the gymnasium. Rhoda Young (right), head of the women's physical education department, was on hand to judge most holey, colorful and biggest pairs of socks. Among the finalists in the competition were Walter Masters, Raymond Green and Florence Brandstetter. The prize for the winners was, appropriately, three new pairs of socks. It was hosted by the art honorary fraternity, Alpha Rho Tau (Greek letters for ART), in honor of the college's foreign students. On February 12, 1949, the art honorary fraternity of the College of Puget Sound, Alpha Rho Tau, threw their very first Beaux Arts Ball. The party was given in honor of the College's foreign students and drew students dressed in all sorts of lavish, exotic and creative costumes. A masked couple glided by in fanciful dress; she a column of black and white ruffles and he a rectangular knight. Other couples looked on from tables near a wall decorated with modern drawings. All of the revelers were unidentified with the exception of the woman directly left of the female dancer. She was Maxine Lister, the winner of the first prize for most original costume. In 1948 College of Puget Sound had the Memorial Fieldhouse built, this building was dedicated in 1949 to those CPS students who died while serving in World War II. In 1949 the President's Residence would be constructed; Dugan, Mock and Morrison were the architects. Pacific Lutheran's Choir of the West participated in many concerts throughout the Pacific Northwest, but they also had countless radio performances, broadcasted over KOMO radio in Seattle. The choir had over fifty of the most talented singers and a number of soloists. View of Pacific Lutheran College's Choir of the West, being conducted by Gunnar J. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. ca. 1948. Christie Walker points out a "favorite" child among a photograph of French orphans to interested donors; Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California executive, stands at her side. C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts. Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner, strob tests, Times, McMurtrie. The College of Puget Sound was holding a Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner contest in conjunction with Sadie Hawkins day and Homecoming Weekend. The judges would name the winning couple during half-time of the College of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran College football game and the winners would lead the grand march during the dance held that same evening.
