On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners gathered in Tacoma for a spring reunion. They kicked off the get together with a parade. A long line of Shriners waited behind their drill leader for the parade to begin. Winthrop Hotel and Roxy theater on Broadway are in background.

Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and adult leaders off to the National Scout Jamboree in Washington D.C., June 30th to July 9th, 1937. The 17 boys and leaders came from Tacoma, Puyallup, Olympia, Centralia and Chehalis and had the distinction of being the (American continental) Scouts to travel the longest distance to the Jamboree. Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and adult leaders off to the National Scout Jamboree in Washington D.C., June 30th to July 9th, 1937. The 17 boys and leaders came from Tacoma, Puyallup, Olympia, Centralia and Chehalis. The group left early, and made side trips to Yellowstone, Chicago, Niagara Falls and New York City on their way to the Jamboree, which was expected to draw around 30,000 Scouts. While the scouts were in the national capital, there was a laundry strike. Tacoma dads received telegrams imploring, "Dad, I'm broke. Laundry strike. Send me ten please. Rush." (see A6014 image 1 for names)

Swiss dance. Men and women seated at tables with streamers above. An array of beer mugs are on the table, coats and hats hang from hooks on the wall, framed pictures, a clock and trophy decorate the dining room. The dance is believed to have taken place at Swiss Hall, a multi-story building erected by the area's Swiss Society.

Swiss dance. Two men with cigars tending bar. The dance may have been held at the Swiss Hall, a building erected by Tacomans of Swiss ancestry. Other photographs in the same series show that the dance was attended by a large crowd. The beer was apparently free.

Five of the oldest members of the Tacoma Elks Club gather to discuss the Good Old Days on Old Timers' night held in January of 1938. They are, left to right, S.J. Maxwell, member #2, whose career was in shipping; George L. Palmer, in the printing business and served once as Deputy Sheriff; S.A. Perkins, member #3, newspaper publishing; Major Charles O. Bates, law; and Calvin S. Heilig, member #1, theater owner in Tacoma and Portland. "Sam" Perkins served as master of ceremonies at the meeting where many memories were shared and enjoyed. (T. The Spinster Club held a "Bowery" dance at the Century Ballroom in Fife on February 25, 1938. The costume cabaret dance offered favors as prizes for the best costumes. Three unidentified young women in costumes smile at a man dressed in a sailor's uniform who is lighting a candle placed in the neck of a beer bottle. The bottles with candles in them were then placed on tables as part of the New York decor. (TNT 2/24/1938, p.13-article)

A quartet of party goers relaxes during the intermission at the Spinster Club "Bowery" dance, held February 25, 1938 at the Century Ballroom. Seated left to right in the booth are Donald Baker, Geraldine Elsbree, Classina Buffelen, and Vivian Sturtridge. Miss Elsbree was the general chairman for the event, which featured appropriately "low rent" decorations, such as the candle in the beer bottle. (T.Times, 3/5/1938, p.7).
