Group portrait of the one hundred voice men's choir and their accompanist, the one lone woman in the seated row, of the Independent Bible Church, 5 So. G St., in January of 1939. The choir was the largest men's choir on the Pacific Coast and one of the largest in the West. It was composed of members of the "Centurions," a Bible study class. The Independent Bible Church had purchased the building at 5 So. G St., formerly the Scottish Rite Cathedral, from the Masonic organization in early 1937. On October 17, 1942, the congregation of the First Lutheran Church posed in front of the exterior of the church, celebrating the congregation's 60th anniversary. The church had been organized on October 17, 1882 as a small missionary enterprise by the Rev. Peter Carlson and eleven Swedish and five Norwegian families. The Norwegians later left to form their own church. The original church at South 8th and I St. burned to the ground in November of 1924. This Gothic stone structure was completed in 1929 and was built from a design by Heath, Gove & Bell. (TNT 10/17/1942, pg. 11)

Robert E. Hutchins Funeral. Aviation cadet Robert E. Hutchins, age 20, was killed in a mid-air plane crash 12 miles north of Merced, California. His casket at Trinity Lutheran Church in Parkland is surounded by flowers, several of which depict the medals Cadet Hutchins won during the war. The one to the left of the casket resembles the Army Distinquished Service Cross, the two on the right resemble the Silver Star, given for galantry in action. Melovidoff. In June of 1943, an orchestra of young people wearing performance clothing and holding their instruments filled First Christian Church's sanctuary. Two older girls stand by conductor Alexander Melovidoff in the front left near a piano. Alex Melovidoff was a talented local music instructor and conductor. He was the founder of the Tacoma Conservatory of Music.

First Methodist Choir in Concert. The First Methodist Choir will be having its Easter season concert in the church sanctuary this weekend. Choir director is Mr. Fritz Berntsen, with Ms. Ruth Johnson as the choir soloist and Mr. David Souter as the guest artist from the Bremerton Symphony (names listed in T. Times, 4/1/44, p. 5).

After picture of new roof on First Congregational Church. Blair Construction, 3022 South 38th. The early Gothic/Tudor church was designed by architect George W. Bullard and had its cornerstone laid on September 5, 1907. While the first services were held in October, 1908, dedication of the church was delayed until December 12, 1909, after all debts were paid.

Choir of approximately 50 poses in front of the First Presbyterian Church in their dark choir robes. The Church, designed by Ralph Adams Cram of Boston, can be seen in the background. The ornate dome atop the tower, with its ancient Christian symbols, has been a dominant fixture of the Tacoma skyline since 1925.

Interior shot from the front of Lincoln Park Christian Church, 3834 So. G St., showing 152 auditorium chairs distributed by Northern School Supply of Portland, Oregon. In 1950, the church had been at its present location for 40 years, established 4/3/1910 with 67 charter members. The basement was built in 1910 and the church met there for ten years, until 1920 when plans were drawn up to complete the church for a cost of $32,000. The interior of the brick building was plaster finish with natural color fir woodwork and art glass windows.

Reverend Carl A. Johnson, minister of the First Christian Church of Tacoma, presented six sermons, all open to the public, in August of 1949. They were held in the Tent Cathedral at 1400 South Trafton, which claimed to be "America's largest fireproof gospel tent." The 100-ft. by 200-ft. tent was packed with those interested in hearing Reverend Johnson preach about "Practical Christian Living" from the Book of James. The Reverend's six sermons were: "Living Practically," "Living Enthusiastically," "Living Spiritually," "Living Prayerfully," "Living Victoriously," and "Living Seriously." In August of 1949 the congregation of the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Tacoma celebrated the 10th anniversary of Reverend Edward Byard Wilson, Pastor. The Bethlehem Baptist Church was dedicated in August 1922; the church building costs were about $10,000. This church is located at South 18th & I Street, in the Hilltop area of Tacoma. On January 7, 1959 the church was virtually destroyed by a fire, and it had to be rebuilt.

Central Lutheran Church was founded in 1925, the church was an active member of the Tacoma community, during World War II they set up a Lutheran Center for Servicemen. They were expecting a large turnout for this year's Easter Services. This photograph of the interior of Visitation Church, 3318 So. 58th St., was taken on January 22, 1948. The sanctuary is filled with scaffolding to the top of the interior arches to make it ready for painting. Two unidentified man at the left watch as workmen from the Safway Steel Scaffolding Company build the complicated gridwork. The church was founded in 1892 and this building was dedicated in 1913. The architect was C. Frank Mahon. The churches stained glass windows are visible on both sides of the pews.

Holy Rosary Church was originally a wooden structure built in 1891, in 1920 this gothic style building was erected at the same site. This church is 270 feet from the ground to the cross, the steeple is 54 feet. In 1941 Holy Rosary Catholic Church celebrated its 50th anniversary. Four hundred members from the First Presbyterian Church honored Dr. and Mrs. J. Renwick McCullough and their son William with a farewell dinner and reception at the church. Dr. McCullough and his family are headed to Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, California. The family was presented with a piano as a going-away gift (T.N.T., 4/21/49, p. A-3).

The volunteers who worked over Memorial Day on their new church take a break on the steps to the building which was estimated to cost $177,000.
