In January of 1940, Tacoma public schools were introducing students to music at elementary school age. This photograph of the orchestra at Sherman School was featured in an article extolling how this early immersion was benefitting the junior and senior high orchestra programs as well as the relatively new Tacoma Philharmonic Orchestra. The Sherman Orchestra was under the direction of Delwen Jones. Performers in the spring music festival at Jason Lee. A series of gypsy, Spanish and Mexican musical numbers were performed under the title "Say It with Music," planned and staged by music teacher Kathryn Bruner. The concert included several hundred student performers from the boys and girls glee clubs, band, orchestra, choir and general music classes. Here the performers are attired in Mexican costumes. This was how the old St. Joseph's Hospital, located at 1812 South I Street, appeared in February of 1940. The hospital was designed and built by the Seattle architect and building contractor Philip A. Baillargeon. It was built for a cost of $400,000 and dedicated in 1915. A north wing was added in 1927. The hospital was demolished in 1982 after the completion of the new 14 million dollar St. Joseph's Hospital nearby. (filed with Argentum)

Stadium High School Class of 1940 graduation at the Armory. 649 students (318 boys and 331 girls) received their diplomas on June 6, 1940 as the third largest Stadium High School graduating class. It was the school's 57th graduation exercises. Graduates marched in to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance" while proud family members and friends cheered and applauded. Shirley Nyman was the school's valedictorian and Mills College scholarship winner and four students shared the honor of being salutatorians: Dorothy Selden, David Glenn, Jr., Ruthi Crain and Patricia Russell. Beginning of the whisker growing contest at the College of Puget Sound. Over 50 young men had signed up for the two week "Whisker Derby," with the coronation of the winner coinciding with Homecoming on October 26, 1939. Whisker styles were supposed to be in keeping with those popular 48 years prior, when the first class graduated from CPS. The orchestra at Jason Lee Middle School boasted two sets of identical twins in 1940. Anthony and Albert Mazzuca, age 15, on clarinet, and Fay and Fern Tschan on Mellophone. Both sets of twins went on to Stadium High School. Anthony and Albert continued to play in the band, and graduated in 1943. Fay and Fern took up other pursuits including the Rifle Club; they were both on the senior honor roll when they graduated in 1945. (T. Times 2/2/1940 p.11)

On May 25-26, 1939, Lincoln High School's music department presented the Gilbert and Sullivan comic one act opera "Trial by Jury." The focus of the plot line of this witty satire on the legal system is a breach of promise suit brought by a jilted bride against a bridegroom who loves another. The judge settles the case by announcing his intention to marry the bride himself. The opera's featured performers were Robert Stabbert (playing the usher), Willard Norman (defendant), Wilton Ramage (judge), Helen Breummer (plaintiff), Leonard Tessier (counsel for the defense) and Tom Galloway (foreman of the jury.) ca. 1913. This is Hawthorne School shortly after opening in September of 1913. The entire population of the elementary school is lined up in front of the imposing building with Jessie Lithgow near the far right. Jessie's face has been circled and an arrow pointed toward the head. Hawthorne School was the first school in the Northwest with a German plan assembly hall. It had originated as East School in 1885 in temporary classrooms at a former store at South 24th & Pacific Ave. A new two-room building was constructed at East D & 31st streets in 1886 and classes were held with only one teacher. A six-room addition was authorized in 1889 by the school board and the school renamed Hawthorne after author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Enrollment grew with the admittance of Puyallup Indian Tribal children in 1896 and by 1904 Hawthorne was the school district's third largest school after Central and Lowell. When other schools were built in the eastern and southern parts of the city enrollment started to decline at Hawthorne in 1908. Nonetheless, a new Hawthorne School was built in 1913 at 28th & East F Sts. It held 438 students and four teachers, much smaller than Hawthorne in 1905 when enrollment reached 1,305 students. Hawthorne closed in 1963 and later the building housed early childhood education programs. For a few short years it was the Puyallup Indian Tribe's Chief Leschi School. The school was razed in June of 1981 to make way for the Tacoma Dome. (Olsen: For the Record, p. 53-54-article & various photographs)
