While ashore during Fleet Week, July 5th-11th, 1938, two unidentified Marines seem to have lost their hats, if not their heads as well, over two young Misses, also unidentified. During Fleet Week, the military landed with force in Tacoma, bringing four battleships and their 5200 officers and men into the city. The week long celebration included parties, a parade, tours of the ships and nightly searchlight drills. TPL-9149

Narrows Bridge celebration at the Stadium Bowl. Bremerton Mayor Jesse A. Knabb, center, and two other men take part in the festivities surrounding a $2,700,000 Progress Works Administration grant to build a bridge across the Narrows. Donald Langbridge and Kathleen McElwain show off the new Schwinn "World" bicycles to be awarded as prizes in the upcoming First Annual Bike Meet. The meet would be composed of a bicycle parade and races. It was held on August 5, 1938 at the Stadium Bowl. The "World" bicycles featuring the newest accessories were the coveted prizes. In February of 1938, this was the view down 11th Street, from the intersection with Market Street, looking east to the Eleventh Street Bridge. In the foreground on the left is 944-48 Market Street, the Yarrington Block, built in 1889 and demolished in 1951. On the following corner is the Merit Hotel at 315 So. 11th Street and continuing east are the Rhodes Building, Fidelity Building and Rust Building. In the foreground on the right can be seen the corner of the Crystal Palace Market. Further down is Fisher's Department Store at 1104 Broadway. TPL-8789

Young men from the College of Puget Sound razz a fellow classmate during the first annual C.P.S. picnic held on April 28, 1938. Classes were dismissed early and students poured out on to the grounds to enjoy the annual freshman vs. sophomore tug-of-war, as well as two hours of games. Following a luncheon served by SPURS, the women's service organization, there was a mass community sing and two hours of dancing. (T. Times 4/29/1938, p. 1).

A ground breaking ceremony for new women's dormitory at the College of Puget Sound was held on February 16, 1938. The June 1938 County Treasurers and Auditors Convention. Gathered outside of the Columbia Brewery, a large group of men toast the photographer with glasses of beer in this casual portrait of government officials. A man in the front row holds what appears to be a tray of money bills. The convention was held jointly by all counties in the state and was attended by representatives of all 39 of those counties. ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma real estate and investment broker tried for mail fraud in 1937. Four men crossing the street at 9th Street and Court A on their way to the Federal Courts. Mr. Morrison would end up serving three years of a five-year term at McNeil Island federal penitentiary. In October, 1941, he would be summoned to Superior Court on eleven counts of grand larceny in the alleged misappropriation of $30,000 entrusted to his firm by Frank Berry, fisherman. ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma broker tried for mail fraud, 1937. Three men standing in the doorway to the Federal Building. Mr. Morrison would be sentenced to a five-year term for using the mails to defraud. He would be released on parole from McNeil Island federal penitentiary after serving three years. He then would be tried in Superior Court on 11 counts of fraud in 1941. (T.Times 10-14-41, p. 1)

Anna Danforth prepares to celebrate her 101st birthday on January 4th, 1939 at the nursing home of Mr. and Mrs. Alf Rodahl at 1624 So. 9th St. Ms. Danforth, Tacoma's oldest woman, wears an apron and shawl and sits next to a Zenith floor model radio. She was born in Kentington Michigan on Jan. 4th, 1838. She married 20 years later in Grand Rapids. Her husband, who operated a sawmill, died 21 years ago in Chehalis. The mother of five sons, she is active and the possessor of a rollicking, albeit dry, sense of humor. (T. Times, 1/4/1939, p. 3)

City Clerk Genevieve Martin administers the oath of office to Public Safety Commissioner Holmes Eastwood at (old) City Hall on June 6, 1938. Mr. Eastwood replaced Frank T. Callender as head of Public Safety; Mr. Callender (not pictured) was present to greet his successor with a handshake. Mr. Eastwood was very dapper in a blue coat, white trousers and white shoes. Mr. Eastwood reportedly brought his own desk and chair to city government, "Should I get kicked out of here, they'll have to kick out my desk and chair, too." One of his first official acts as Safety Commissioner was to give out-of-city motorists a parking break by issuing cards allowing them to park on downtown streets without fear of overtime tickets It would be a means to encourage tourism in the city's core.
