In the center is the Harmon pedestrian bridge between the Harmon building (left), 1938 Pacific, and the Harmon warehouse, 1949 So. C St.

ca. 1979. The Massasoit Hotel, circa 1979. The brick structure was built in 1889; Dennis & Proctor, architects; Col. John W. Pinkerton, builder. The former hotel is now the University of Washington Tacoma Institute of Technology.

ca. 1979. Faded Columbia Brewery mural on side of building, circa 1979. "Everybody knows it's better, Alt Heidelberg," accompanied by a stein lifting image of the company's signature student prince. The "ghost sign" dates back to 1933 when Columbia Brewery was still making its special lager brew Alt Heidelberg (Old Heidelberg.) In later years, Columbia Brewery sold to Heidelberg Brewing and Carling Brewing. The brewery closed in 1979. (TNT 12/18/2005, Soundlife section "Ghost signs beckon Tacoma toward its future")

ca. 1979. The Carlton Hotel, circa 1979. The Carlton was built in 1909 by Anton Huth, from a design by architect C.A. Darmer. The hotel was also home to the 1555 Tavern and the Barbary Coast restaurant.

ca. 1979. On the left is the back of the Jefferson House Nursing Home at 1748 Jefferson and on the right is the Massasoit Hotel at 1708 Broadway. The brick Massasoit was built in 1889 and remodeled almost 100 years later for the Moss Adams Accounting firm. It is now part of the University of Washington Tacoma campus.

ca. 1979. Crystal Palace Building, 1508-16 Jefferson Ave., circa 1979. The structure was built in 1889 from a design by F.S. Sexton. The building was originally brick with wooden store fronts, the stucco facade was added in the 1960's. Schoenfeld's Furniture, 1423 Pacific, can be seen in the background.

ca. 1979. Commerce Street entrance (1520-22) of the 1519-21 Broadway St. building. The structure was named the Siler Block in 1889 when it was built by W.O. Siler, based on a design by architect G.C. Clements. A second story, designed by architects Bullard & Hill, was added in 1916 and the structure was renamed the H.A. Strong building. The building was renovated in 1985 and was later demolished to make way for the Convention Center.
