Approximately 50 county auditors and treasurers from around the state met in Tacoma in June of 1938 for their third annual joint convention. One of the highlights of their visit to Tacoma was a trip to the Columbia Brewery where these two unidentified conventioneers were photographed enjoying a sample of the company's popular brew. Representatives of all the state's 39 counties were expected to attend the banquet held in the Crystal ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop with a total attendance, including wives, of over 100. (T. In August of 1938, a work crew of women sorted and hand cleaned bulbs at the George Lawler bulb farm at Gardenville, near Fife. They removed husks and separated daughter bulbs. Diseased or cut bulbs were discarded before grading. In 1910, George Lawler built a house on 5 acres of muddy deserted land near Fife and planted over 2000 flower bulbs with which he launched Pierce County's first commercial bulb business. The area was renamed Gardenville in honor of his flowers. After his death in 1948, the company's signature daffodil stock was sold to United Bulb Co. of Woodland.

In 1910, George Lawler bought 5 acres of land in Gardenville, near Fife, where he built a house and planted 2200 bulbs. As the commercial bulb business took off, he purchased land in North Puyallup and Roy.

When the wooden Whidbey Island - Mukilteo ferry landing was damaged by a ferry in August of 1938, the Puget Sound Navigation Company contacted the Star Iron & Steel Company in Tacoma. Within five days, plans were drawn and a steel replacement was built and ready for installation. The Cooney Transfer & Storage Company transported the finished 30,000 pound, 64 foot-long structure on an extra long Becholdt trailer. (T. Times, 8/23/1938, p. 3).

The original wooden ferry landing structure was ripped out by the ferry a week ago. Within five days, the plans were drawn for the steel replacement, the steel was fabricated and two coats of paint were applied. (T. Times, 8/23/1938, p.3).

Harry Clark, 65, who lived at 3823 E. J St. is shown sitting at the throttle of a Northern Pacific locomotive in this photograph from December 1938. Mr. Clark had just retired after working for over 48 years as a railroad engineer and "truckman." A truckman repaired broken parts on locomotives. His many years as an engineer made him an excellent engine repairman. (T. Times, 12/28/38, p.5)

ca. 1938. The dark exterior of Columbia Breweries has the name Alt Heidelberg beer painted on the north edge of the top of the main brewery. West Coast Grocery's Coffee Department is seen on the right at 2114 South C Street. West Coast Grocery was at this location from 1928 through 1945. Copies of old prints ordered by Heidelberg Brewing Company in December 1954.

This photograph of the Mountain Lumber Company, located at 919 East F Street on the Tacoma tideflats, was taken on February 3, 1939. Paul Billings, born in Lyndon, Kansas, moved to Tacoma in 1920 and opened the Mountain Lumber Co. in 1924. The mill was rebuilt after it burned in a spectacular fire in 1931. In January of 1950 Mountain Lumber was purchased by the Dickman Lumber Company.

The Mountain Lumber Company, February 1939. The Mountain Lumber Company, at 919 East F. Street, was built in 1924 and began cutting lumber in February of 1925. The main mill building was destroyed by fire in July of 1931. The company re-opened before the end of the year, and they were part of Tacoma's busy waterfront until the mid-1940s.

Former Lincoln automobile dealership, new home of Olympic Dairy at 9th and K Street in March of 1939. Photograph ordered by Corky Maybin at the Tacoma Times. The structure was built in 1925 from a design by C.F.W. Lundberg for Mutual Motors. It was home to Donoghue Chevrolet, American Motors Inc. and Tommy Burns Inc. before becoming the new plant for the Olympic Dairy in 1939. Remodeling the structure and adding modern equipment cost Olympic more than $75,000. The 30 year old firm did not move any of their old equipment to their new plant. (filed with Argentum) (T. The launching of the U.S. Navy Destroyer 408, the U. S. S. Wilson, took place April 12, 1939 at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton. At 90% complete, the vessel was 341-feet-long with 1725 tons displacement. It carried a complement of 9 officers and 175 men. It was commissioned July 5, 1939 and received eleven battle stars for service in World War II. After sustaining damage during the war, it was selected as a target during the atom bomb test at Bikini Atoll in July of 1946. It was decommissioned in August of 1946 but remained afloat and was finally scuttled off Kwajelein in March of 1948. (T. Times, 4/13/39, p.20)

Launching of the U.S. Navy Destroyer #408, the U. S. S. Wilson, on April 12, 1939. The ship was decorated with pennants and bunting and photographed at dock in the Puget Sound Navy Yard at Bremerton. Ship launchings at the Navy yard differed from those at Tacoma Shipyards. The craft was built in a construction dock which was flooded for launching, much like a bathtub. The launching consisted of the gates being opened and the boat towed out into the Sound. The destroyer under construction in the background was almost entirely submerged during the ceremony. (T.
