Battery "D," 148th Field Artillery, Washington National Guard encampment "Camp Hoffman," in June of 1932. Guardsmen are posed with a piece of artillery labeled "Donut Dunker." Members of the 148th Field Artillery from Tacoma, 146th Field Artillery from Seattle, 161st Infantry from Spokane plus flying, ambulance, cavalry and tank units amassed at Camp Murray from June 16-30, 1932, for the annual field training. Each year the encampment was named after a different individual; in 1932 it was the "Camp Edward D. Hoffman," in honor of the Tacoma flier who died in service in the mountains of California a few months before. Col. Carlos Pennington was in command of the 148th F.A. Governor's Review of National Guard at Fort Lewis. Large crowd of spectators gathered on a hill to observe the largest military review up to that time. Flag bearers followed by military unit on parade grounds. Governors from Washington, Oregon and Montana were present to watch 14,000 regular army and national guard troops pass in formal review. This is possibly the 161st regiment, Washington National Guard, from the 81st Infantry Brigade. (T. Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

In honor of Navy Day, October 27, 1936, an engineer's whaleboat race was held at the Bremerton Navy Yard. Competing for the win were crews from the USS Salt Lake City, Colorado and Texas. One of the crews was photographed in their whaleboat with oars up prior to the starter's whistle. The race was won by the crew from the Salt Lake City, who claimed the Bremerton Sun trophy for the race. (Bremerton Sun 10/28/1936, pg. 1).

Army Day. The 1936 annual encampment of the Washington National Guard was named "Camp Wesley Lloyd" after the late congressman Lloyd. It was held in June of 1936 at Camp Murray. Soldiers were photographed sitting straight, with their arms crossed in the back of trucks. Some of the trucks pull artillery. In the background are small buildings and fir trees.

Known as the "Can Do" Regiment, the group was stationed in China for 26 years, helping the Chinese fight flood and famine.

Reunion of Sergeant Charles Jacobson and his wife aboard the US army transport ship, the US Grant. The ship arrived in Tacoma on the afternoon of March 23, 1938 from China. Mrs. Jacobson had left her husband in China the previous fall and returned to San Francisco to wait for him. The regiment's withdrawal from China hastened their reunion. The "Can Do" regiment was reassigned to Fort Lewis. Mrs. Jacobson was enthusiastically describing their new cottage at Ft. Lewis to her husband. (T. Times 3/24/1938, pg. 5)

Sergeant Ross H. Scott, longest serving enlisted man in the 15th Infantry. Sgt. Ross reported for duty in China in 1914 and has been there ever since, except for a five year period during the first World War. According to Ross, the 15th Infantry has been through 20 wars during their 26 year stint in China, without ever firing a shot. The 20 wars were bloody and brutal civil wars within China. During these turbulent times, the 15th fought the floods and famines that ravaged that country. The locals developed a fond name for regiment, the "Can Dos." (T. Times 3/24/1938, pg. 4)
