CPS. Marcello Mochi, center, was the Italian vice consul stationed in Seattle. He came to Tacoma to meet with the World Affairs Council October 5, 1948, at the College of Puget Sound. He told about the Italian struggle and some of the war-torn areas where he served during the Ethopian conflict and World War II. Shown with Mr. Mochi are Ray W. They had already worked out on campus in preparation for the battle against the San Jose State Spartans on October 1st. Dr. Seth C. Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and his wife Enga are getting ready to depart on a three month trip to Europe. The Eastvold's will be visiting England, Scandinavian countries, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Italy. Dr. Eastvold plans to make two quick stops prior to leaving for Europe. In Moorhead, Minnesota he will give the Commencement Address at Concordia University, and he will attend the Biennial Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The Eastvolds will return to Tacoma in September (T. Times, 5/29/48, p. 10).

May Day celebration. The royal court that reigned over the Pacific Lutheran College's May festival held May 8, 1948, included Queen Ardys Bredvold, seated in the center. Sigma Nu Fraternity. The 101st Sigma Nu fraternity chapter was installed April 24, 1948. It was the Zeta Alpha chapter on the College of Puget Sound campus. On the left is Arthur A. Barlow, First Vice Regent of Sigma Nu. The local chapter president, Clarence Nelson, is in the middle. The man on the right may be Malcolm C. Sewell, General Secretary of the national organization, who arrived April 23rd from Indianapolis for the ceremony at the Corinthian Room, Masonic Temple. CPS. Students at the College of Puget Sound are determined to win the many valuable awards in the Tacoma T-Man contest. One young man is wearing a gas mask. Two hold rifles and the last one holds a revolver in his hand and a pipe in his teeth. They have scoured the campus in hopes of locating the elusive subject. The 7th jingle clue was, "For he is sound as sound can be, A saint in two he is, not three. All will vouch and praise his name, and then go on to win the game". "T-Men", an Edward Small production released by Eagle Lion Films, was opening at the Rialto Theater. The film starred Dennis O'Keefe and was based on a compilation of three actual cases of US Treasury Department agents going under cover to track down a counterfeiting ring. CPS. The College of Puget Sound SPURS hosted the regional meeting of SPURS, the national women's honorary service organization, March 5, 6, and 7, 1948, on the CPS campus. Members from Washington, Oregon and Montana attended. Three main topics were discussed: new member selection, activities and expansion of activities. ca. 1948. Christie Walker points out a "favorite" child among a photograph of French orphans to interested donors; Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California executive, stands at her side. C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts. Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. As of May 1948, ceramics would be featured in the annual student art exhibit. (T.Times, 5/15/1948, p.5)

Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Students (all men) work in a science lab with microscopes, slides, rocks, test tubes and small bottles of different solutions. A motar and pestle sits on the table for students to use to grind materials with which they want to experiment further. Jars of labeled materials sit on shelves around the room and gas lines are also seen against the wall to provide flame for certain kinds of experiments.
