Sunset Electric Company presented a display of Frigidaire appliances at the 1952 Puyallup Fair featuring several sizes of refrigerator, an electric water heater, washer and dryer, a mandrel ironing machine, electric stoves, and an institutional sized milk cooler. A large sign over the washer and dryer announced, "Leisure Laundry."

An International-style Reserve Officers Military Ball was held on February 18, 1939, at the Crystal Ballroom in the Hotel Winthrop with over 500 people in attendance. Members of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from Vancouver, British Columbia, performed a highlander's dance for officers from Washington State. Fleet Week, July 5 through 11, 1938, Tacoma. Sailors help civilians up the gangplank of a battleship for a tour. During Fleet Week, the citizenry was invited to come out and see out their defense dollars were being spent. In 1938, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland dropped anchor in Commencement Bay to visit Tacoma and have Tacoma visit them.

Fleet Week, July 5 through 11, 1938. Sailor playing accordion to a group of four young girls. During Fleet Week, Tacoma played host to 5200 officers and men of the visiting battleships, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland. In return, the Navy thrilled Tacoma with a military parade, boat races and nighttime searchlight displays.

Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance. The water is teeming with commercial tugs, row boats and yachts. Races were held for each catagory of vessel. Row boats maneuver near the Andrew Foss, Henrietta Foss, Theodora Foss, Peter Foss and Foss Tug No. 10 and 15. " Mathilda Foss" placed first in the Tugboat Annie Race, for boats 50 HP or better. (T. On Sunday April 24, 1938 a crowd estimated at 25,000 filled the deck, boat ramp and parking lot at Point Defiance to watch the Water Carnival sponsored by Tacoma's Young Men's Business Club. A handful of young spectators even climbed out onto the roof of the old Point Defiance Pavilion (far right) for a better view. The carnival which featured tug boat and row boat races and a salmon derby was held in part to celebrate the departure of the Tacoma-built "Western Explorer". It was hoped that coverage of the event by photographers, radio broadcasters, and newsreel companies would serve to publicize Tacoma. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p.1).

This was just a fraction of the crowds estimated at 25,000 that attended the Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. A full exterior view of the Russel and Babcock-designed concrete waterfront pavilion shows it packed with crowds of people on all three levels. Spectators were treated to a colorful pageant of marine craft ranging from tugs and fishing boats to the Tacoma Yacht Club fleet. Tug and rowboat races entertained all. The 85-foot fishing vessel, the "Western Explorer" bid a fond farewell as she left Tacoma for her long voyage down the coast and on to Gloucester, Mass., via the Panama Canal. The water carnival was so popular that for many years it was an annual event. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p. 1+-article).

Daffodil Pageant. The Merchants Association float featured a lighthouse and row boat with two women fishing. Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau won the grand prize for its "fisherman's paradise" theme. In the background is the Queens viewing stand at 10th and Pacific. Thirty thousand people attended Tacoma's parade.

1938 Daffodil Festival Parade. A float features a floral airplane with the sign: "Tacoma Wholesalers Welcomes The Northwest Air Base." Industrial building in background appears to be Washington Wineries, "Home of the Lovino." On March 30, 1938, the County officials had signed over the deed of Tacoma Field to the War Department to be used in the construction of a giant airbase, to be called McChord Field. 1938 Daffodil Pageant. Queen Bliss Lundrigan and her attendants Agnes Kucemba, right, and Bernice Daniel take their place in the reviewing stand to reign over the parade's 39 entries in Tacoma. For the first time in the Puyallup Valley Festival's 5 year history, the Royalty wears official robes. The costumes worn by the attendants are symbolic of three Pacific Northwest features; the white blouses represent the snows of Mt. Rainier, the yellow vests the fields of daffodils and the green skirts the waters of Puget Sound. Queen Bliss's skirt and robes are of purple for royalty. (T.Times, 4/2/1938, p. 1)

The Puget Sound Navy Orchestra, from Seattle, performed jazz at the second annual music festival on July 28, 1946, at Point Defiance Park. The orchestra was under the direction of Ensign William Paul Currence. Watching and waiting for their turn to play, right, was either the 448th Special Service Band or Sharps and Flats, both groups from Fort Lewis. The newspapers classified their sound as "Boogie-Woogie." The 448th was under the direction of Sgt. Benjamin W. Martin; Sharps and Flats was under the direction of Joe Jordan. The concert, held in the natural amphitheater at the entrance to the park, drew over 7,000 listeners. It was also broadcast over the Mutual Network by KMO. This photograph from the Helen Stafford collection is dated July 29, 1945, meaning it was taken at the first USO music festival at Point Defiance. Six thousand attendees sat on the grass to listen to the 362nd Army Band from Fort Lewis play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Also performing were the 29th Special Service Band directed by Sgt. Striking gasfitters and electrical workers stall in talks with employers. The strike had been in progress for 69 days. About 340 union members from parts of King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, and Lewis counties have been affected, with an additional 260 members of other unions striking in support. Demonstrators show their support for the La Girls show by holding signs. After being cancelled at three Tacoma-area locations, the La Girls show was performed at the Sherwood Inn. The event brought both supporters and opponents of the La Girls show.
