Whitmore-Chandler wedding. The Little Church on the Prairie was decorated in a Christmas motif of white chrysanthemums, gladiolus, and poinsettias for the wedding of Marjory Anne Whitmore and Charles Theodore Chandler III on December 27, 1952. The bride is wearing a beautiful Chantilly lace and net over satin wedding gown which includes a long sleeved lace bolero jacket. A diamond and platinum brooch belonging to her mother is pinned onto the jacket. She has a fingertip veil which is fastened to a lace cap. Her bouquet consists of stephanotis and white orchids. Both bride and groom studied at the College of Puget Sound. They honeymooned in Sun Valley, Idaho. (TNT 1-4-53, D-1)
Mike Shea marathon. 1937's winner of the Cooks & Waiters annual "bunion derby" -a 4.6 mile high-paced walk from Tacoma to Fife's Century Ballroom- covered the distance in 57 minutes. Mike Shea (left in photograph) felt that the distance was too short to test a man's walking ability. Whitey Flemish disagreed and bet that Mike could not walk the same distance in an hour. Whitey felt confident as the Cooks & Waiters winner was a younger man and presumably fitter. The bet was on and Mike started his heeling-and-toeing from the Olympus Hotel at 12:30 a.m. on February 16, 1938. 20 carloads of fans followed Mike who was paced by policeman Bill Turner (believed to be at right above). Senator Walter Davis, history professor at the College of Puget Sound, sat on a bench in Wright Park on the first day of spring in 1938 and edited papers. Despite the designation as spring, the day was chilly with a high of 49 and a low of 30. It did not stop people from venturing out to enjoy the brisk air and bouts of sunshine. Walter S. Davis served in the Washington State Legislature from 1913 to 1929 as Senator for the 27th District. He was instrumental in shaping Washington State's education policies, introducing a bill that made teaching of American History and Civics in high school compulsory. With the arrival of spring in 1938, Eugene Brown, 1113 No. "M" and Jim Burkhouse, 1112 No. "L" went to Wright Park to try out their model sailboats. They quickly attracted a small audience, including Kenneth Lober, of 402 So. "I," who rode up on his scooter. (T.Times 3/21/1938, p.1).

Daffodil Pageant. The Improved Order of Redmen, the oldest American organization in the United States, celebrated the theme Boston Tea Party with colonials, Indians, and a tepee aboard their float. Their motto: "freedom, friendship and charity." (T.Times, 4/2/1938, p 1).

1938 Daffodil Parade. A colonial and native Americans populate a float entered in the parade by the Improved Order of Redmen stating "We organized the Boston Tea Party in 1773." The float is attributed to "The oldest American organization in the United States." The Order of Redmen is indeed one of America's oldest fraternal organizations not imported from another country. It is also chartered by Congress. The group was founded in 1765 as the Sons of Liberty. It was a secret society dedicated to throwing off the bonds of English tyranny. After the revolution, it assumed its current name. The group is devoted to inspiring a greater love of the United States of America and the principles of American liberty.

For the first time in the Puyallup Valley Festival's 5 year history, the Royalty wears official robes. The costumes worn by the attendants are symbolic of three Pacific Northwest features; the white blouses represent the snows of Mt. 1938 Daffodil Parade. Large crowds gathered around the Daffodil Queen Bliss I and her attendants in an elaborate reviewing stand constructed at 10th and Pacific. Bliss Lundrigan, a 17 year old senior at Puyallup High School, is the reigning Queen, attended by Bernice Daniel of Tacoma, left, and Agnes Kucemba of Sumner. The trio appear in their official robes, a first for Daffodil royalty. An estimated 30,000 people attended the parade in Tacoma which continued on into the valley.

On March 30, 1938, the County officials had signed over the deed of Tacoma Field to the War Department to be used in the construction of a giant airbase, to be called McChord Field. The second annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta. Several wooden power motored yachts, including the "Blanche D," gather on Puget Sound. The day of the regatta, April 3rd 1938, proved to be an exciting one. It opened with a morning fire on one of the yachts, continued on with a collision during the power boat race and ended with a small cabin cruiser capsizing, spilling 5 people into the frigid Puget Sound. Two unidentified men observe the damage done to a power boat during the 2nd Annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta held on April 3, 1938. The boat is most likely the "Bo-Peep," captained by Bennett O. Swain, which was damaged in a collision during the 24 vessel race. Rain, wind and tide contributed to the accident which resulted when Capt. Norton Clapp's "Carmelita" passed the "Bo-Peep." The passing was close and the "Bo-Peep" was drawn into the "Carmelita's" wake, smacking the "Carmelita's" stern. The "Bo-Peep" was damaged on the bow above the water line, but continued on, and eventually won the race. (T. Times 4/4/1938, pg 1)
