Hilltop Library Planning Committee Documents

Foundational documents of the Hilltop Library Planning Committee with information about its members, mission, values and goals. Background information on the previous Martin Luther King, Jr. library branch is included. Slides from a presentation about the committee's activities are included. Community cafes were conducted at the Peace Community Center and library usage data was collected from people in attendance. The final document contains a cost outline from the City of Tacoma for rebuilding a library in the Hilltop neighborhood.

Great Octopus

Measures 80 feet by 70 feet, made of traffic marking paint. Dionne Bonner's description of the work is "[d]uring the 2008 Art on the Avenue summer festival, in Tacoma WA, I painted a street intersection mural. The mural was painted directly on the pavement of an intersection closed during the festival and was based on an illustration I designed depictin gan octopus and other sea live. the day-long public art project was completed with the help of festival-goers".

Interconnections

Measures 36 feet by eight feet. The medium is latex paint on marine quality wood panels and graffiti coating. Dionne Bonner's description of the work is "'Interconnections' mural represents unity and is dedicated to each community member's contribution (long-time, displaced, and new) to the lively and diverse Hilltop neighborhood. The indelible mark the Black community has had in shaping this neighborhood is unmistakable. But this community has not always been reported on or seen in its true light. There has been a narrowness of thought about Hilltop in the past, and through a skewed lens, the resiliency of the Black community has been ignored".

Paint the Street

Measures 75 feet by 85 feet. The medium is traffic marking latex paint with additive. Dionne Bonner's description of the work is "Paint the Street temporary community Intersection mural was designed to be participatory. This temporary mural involved the community from design to completion and was painted directly on the pavement at a neighborhood intersection. Members of the community came out during a block party-style event over two days to draw out the design and paint it in. The event brought people together to paint a brightly colored mural the neighbors helped to design through workshops. The mural project encouraged calmer traffic and a safer environment".

Tu Poder (Your Power)

Measures 24 inches by 36 inches. The medium is oil on canvas. Dionne Bonner's description of the work is "Your power (Tu Poder) equates to your light, the special and unique part that makes you one of a kind. This source is also what undergirds us in times of trial and victory. This power is present in each one of us and our ability to tap into it, through prayer or meditation, truly is our main mechanism to navigate life".
