This snapshot was taken at night either during the 1972 Christmas season or shortly after when the streets of downtown Tacoma still had their holiday decorations up. The vibrant red and gold tones of this lantern with its snowman and soldier figures helped to brighten the winter nights.

This is an artist's concept of a proposed apartment complex called "Nineteen Broadway North" situated on North 1st St. between Broadway and "E." The 16-story structure would have beautiful views of Mount Rainier and the waterfront. Construction of this high-rise would begin January of 1974 with completion date scheduled in the spring of 1975. 36 individual homes, with prices ranging from $33,000-81,000, would be offered by builder Cawdrey & Vemo, Inc. of Seattle. The concrete framed-tower's front entrance would be on Broadway. "Nineteen Broadway North" was the second announced condo complex in the past four months: already under construction directly across "E" St. was the "One Stadium Way North" building. Its size is apparent compared to the man standing at the foot of one of the supports. Even the truck nearby appears miniscule. John H. (Big John) Anderson wore a victory smile Wednesday as election returns gave him more than 50 percent of the vote for Position 1 on the Tacoma School Board. Anderson overwhelmed his two opponents and will appear on the November ballot alone. See story on Page A-1.

A Slip of the Presidential Tongue
Former POW Lt. Col. John Dramesi of Tacoma presented an American flag he fashioned secretly while in prison to President Nixon Friday in the White House Oval Office. As he received the flag, Nixon kidded Dramesi, advising him to accept all the invitations to Washington dinner parties he can get. The President also had words of caution: "Watch out for some of those dogs they have you sit by," Nixon said. Then he caught himself, adding, "No, there are some very nice girls in Washington."

Wispy puffs of smoke emerge from the plant's 562-foot smokestack. ASARCO would eventually close twelve years later due to economic and environmental reasons. The smelter stack was demolished in 1993.

ca. 1973. 1973 Richards stock footage. This aerial view features the two large domes leased by Kaiser Aluminum from the Port of Tacoma. The aluminum sheathed domes stored shipments of alumina ore from Australia. Both domes were eventually dismantled about 2005.

ca. 1973. 1973 Richards stock footage. "Santa Maria." This particular "Santa Maria" may be the ex-Navy cargo vessel now converted to a lobster fishing boat scheduled to work in the Southwest Pacific. According to the January 8, 1972, edition of Marine Digest, the 182 x 34-foot vessel would have refrigeration and insulated holds fitted and tank capacities increased.

ca. 1973. 1973 Richards stock footage. An Allied Mobile Powerwash truck is parked outside the Winthrop in 1973 as it prepares to clean the exterior of the former landmark hotel. The Winthrop, built in 1925, had closed its doors in early August of 1971. It was converted into senior/elderly apartments to be opened in August of 1973.

Three cargo ships, including the "Atlantis," are in port. Tacoma Boatbuilding had moved to 1840 Marine View Dr. N.E. in 1969 after fire had destroyed their longtime Sitcum Waterway plant.

ca. 1973. Copy of customer artwork ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding on April 6, 1973. The colored drawing is of a Navy prototype vessel, Aerojet's Air Cushioned Amphibious Assault Landing Craft (AALC). It appears to have two pilothouses which are both occupied. Two other similar vessels are on dry land along with a tank. Tacoma Boatbuilding had built and outfitted the 100-ton prototype craft, the "SES-100A," which was christened in July of 1971. It had recently announced that it would build the AALC for the Navy. However, it was announced in the News Tribune's December 21, 1973, issue that the contract to build the 167-ton aluminum-hulled craft was shifted from the financially troubled Tacoma Boatbuilding Co. to Seattle's Todd Shipyards. The craft, capable of reaching 50 knots in 3-foot waves, was due for completion in 1975. (TNT 3-22-73, C-11- article; TNT 12-21-73, A-3)

The Tacoma Art Museum will begin its third year in its permanent home at 12th and Pacific Avenue with a University-College Faculty Art Show which opens with a members’ preview from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. An employee of Tigre Tierra, Inc. of Puyallup demonstrates the versatility of this "Padi Tiger" as it maneuvers deftly through a lake in the 5800 block of North Meridian on December 20, 1973. Padi Tiger on land. An employee of Tigre Tierra, Inc. of Puyallup poses with model T70 in late December of 1973 in rural North Meridian. Moments before the vehicle had proved its versatility by churning through the waters of a nearby lake. The unit appears to have swingable driving controls as the driver, although facing forward in both this photograph and in D164307, image 7, has part of the vehicle reversed. An unusual feature is the combination sink and breakfast bar, with its bright red sink compartments, red placemats and large strawberry cookie jar. This large bathroom was on exhibit at the Village Shopping Center in Lacey in December of 1973. The bathroom featured abundant counter space and dark brown cabinetry. Golden yellow curtains accentuated the bright brass fixtures. Unusual black-and-white wallpaper of women of a bygone era provided a stark contrast to the gold and earth tones used in decorating. Parked outside the National Automotive Warehouse at South 24th & Commerce on December 7, 1973, was a red truck with attached trailer. A large sign on the trailer indicates that it was full of Borg-Warner automotive parts. Borg-Warner is a well established firm in business for over 100 years.
