A record 228 students graduated in the class of 1950 at Pacific Lutheran College. They pose on the steps of Old Main. Dr. Harry K Newburn, president of the University of Oregon, spoke on the subject of "The Uncommon Man". That could describe the person with a college diploma in 1950. A group of 260 school children from the Silverdale School in Kitsap County and Bainbridge Island School visited the Washington State Historical Society in June 1950. Chapin D. Foster (right foreground), Secretary and Director of the Washington State Historical Society museum, was giving a talk on Washington history prior to conducting them through the building. This was the largest school group in the building at one time in 1950. During the school year more than 200 bus loads of pupils totaling more than 6,000 students visited the Historical Society building as part of their study of Washington history. The graduates would attend mass and receive holy communion followed by a breakfast prepared by the Visitation Women's Club. Tacoma Vocational-Technical School offered training for all types of trades. In 1949 there were 500 students in attendance with 1,400 more as apprentices. Here six men are learning to install and repair utility lines in the electrical lineman trade, one of 50 trades offered. The three students at left are identified as (in no particular order) Ed Sorger, Jr., George Blanc and Tom Padden. Strapped securely by lineman's belts, some are working on transformers on genuine, although shortened, poles. The Tacoma Vocational-Technical School was operated by the Tacoma public school system in compliance with the state plan for vocational education. Activities at Annie Wright Seminary. In November of 1949, three students were photographed taking a break from studies in one of the large dormitory rooms at Annie Wright Seminary. One of the girls sits at a desk with a book open. Another student leans against one of the dressers in the room while sitting on the arm of an upholstered chair. The other girl sits on the end of her bed with stuffed animals. An Annie Wright banner is hung on the wall and there are also two bulletin boards hung on the walls. Annie Wright Seminary was a private school for girls, many of them boarding, which had been established in September of 1884.

Mrs. Lorraine W. Pike, 6-A teacher at Horace Mann school, 5234 South J Street, worked with Gordon Brunswick (left) and Stanley Nelson on the model German village that their class was building in April of 1937. The highly detailed model, with thatched-roofed buildings and tiny villagers was built by the class to help them visualize what life was like in Germany in 410 A.D. (T. Times, 4/1/1937 p.3).

Lincoln High School shop teacher Ned Ubben, right, watched in December of 1937 as Irene Kuhne and Otto Robinson mended two of the items given to needy families in Tacoma by the school's students. Maintaining a tradition started in 1922 by The Lincoln News, the school's student publication, Lincoln students filled 66 Christmas baskets with food and toys. In December of 1937, Peggy Bently and Lucille Rudd (order not known) were "Santa's Twins" at Lincoln High School. The two young men are Harold Oswald (left) and Gordon Ambrose. Peggy and Lucille were the organizing force behind the Lincoln News' efforts to provide a Merry Christmas to 66 needy families in Tacoma. In a tradition begun in 1922, food, toys and clothing were collected by Lincoln High School students and distributed in gift baskets to families in need selected by Tacoma's social service agencies. Used toys that were donated were repaired in the Lincoln High School metal and wood shops, and clothes was repaired or sewn in the school's home economics classes. (T. Times 12-21-1937, p. 12)

William Hardie, the Lincoln High School track coach, posed with five of his track men in September of 1937. By the end of the year, the Lincoln Abes track team had won the state track title for the third consecutive year. With six returning letterman for the 1937-38 team, coach Hardie was hoping to make it four in a row. In the back row are, left to right, Hardie, Rankin, Wilcox and Sharp. Kneeling in front are Harold H. Berndt (left) and Lincoln's best "sprint man" Tommy Jones (right). At the state competition in Pullman, "Hurrying" Harold Berndt finished first in the 100 and 200 yard dashes and was high point man for the tournament. (T. Two students in Natalie Blix's first grade class at McKinley School play house in the miniature home built by the class. Creative teacher Miss Blix used the construction to teach the children vocabulary. Pacific Lutheran College President O.A. Tingelstad poses with the Swedish granite cornerstone for the new library building at the October 23, 1937 cornerstone laying ceremony. The cornerstone reads in Latin : "Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum MCMXXXVII." The Latin phrase translates as "The word of God remains in Eternity 1937." The building was designed by Emanuel J.
