After repainting in green and blue, the Junior League Thrift Store is ready to reopen in early 1939. Members established the thrift store in 1930 to support their Well Baby Clinic. At counter: Mrs. John Gregg, Cornelia Marie Cardin, Mrs. John Bates Roberts. The woman identified by the Tacoma Times as Cornelia Marie Cardin was known to her family as "Connie Rie;" and, according to her daughter, she married Paul Sheppard Savidge, Jr. of Tacoma on December 7, 1940. Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. The White and Gold Baton Troupe. Twenty-eight girls dressed in satin costumes as drum majorettes and posed with batons in the Knights of Pythias Castle Hall in May of 1939. The head majorette, front and center, has been identified as Connie Francis Imus. Wallace Cory Imus, man on the extreme right back row, organized the White and Gold Baton Troupe along with Clara Imus. The White and Gold Baton Troupe, composed of girls 7-12 years old, would be performing at the Ray C. Roberts Hall at Sixth & Anderson Sts. on June 8, 1939. On October 11, 1939, the fall meeting of the Pierce County Pioneer and Historical Society was held at the Steilacoom Town Hall. Members are dressed in period costumes, ca. 1880, saved in trunks from their ancestors. Steilacoom is historically important to Pierce County, being the first shipping port on the upper Puget Sound, the location of the first territorial court, the first Protestant Church north of the Columbia River, first area north of the Columbia to incorporate as a town and the home to the first public library. Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.

In May of 1939, the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers met on the campus of the College of Puget Sound to have their photograph taken for an exhibit at the New York Worlds Fair. In this picture, three of the club members are seen with one of the clubs larger telescopes. The young fellow looking through the telescope is Jimmy Wiborg, who was 14-years-old and the youngest member of the club. Jimmy had just recently finished building his own telescope. It had taken him two years to build, including 8 months to grind and polish the six-inch mirror. In this photograph Jimmy is flanked by (left) W.H. Crump, past-president of the club, and Fred Myers, meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau. (T. Times, 5/16/1938, p. 16).

Fourteen year old Jimmy Wiborg gazes through a telescope on the campus of the College of Puget Sound in May of 1939. He is the youngest member of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers. Other members pictured are, left to right, Fred Myers (meteorologist with the US Weather Bureau) and W.H. Crump (past president of the organization.) The group was posing for a series of pictures scheduled to be exhibited at the New York World's Fair. The group had constructed over 30 telescopes of varying sizes and power. The one pictured was built by Mr. Crump. The club was currently meeting on the campus of CPS, but had purchased property at 968 McKinley Road on McKinley Hill, with the intention of building a clubhouse and observatory. (T. In January of 1941 the Tacoma Spinster Club sponsored a roller skating party at Berg's Roller Bowl at 8006 South Tacoma Way in Lakewood. Four Spinster Club members, wearing saddle shoes and steel roller skates fastened with keys, were photographed at the skating party with two of their guests. Two couples pose at the University Union Club Sadie Hawkins Dance on March 15, 1941. The men are dressed in formal attire, but the women are definitely attired Dogpatch style. The pairs are seated on a hay bale and tin cups and cans have taken the places of drink glasses for the evening. Sadie Hawkins Day, usually celebrated in November, was the invention of Al Capp in his Li'l Abner comic strip. It was the day, decades before women's liberation, when women could ask out the man of their dreams. By the 1930's, it was sweeping the nation. The schedule for the evening included dancing from 9:30- 1, followed by a supper.

The Pacific Coast Fire Chiefs Convention was held in Tacoma during late July of 1940 with chiefs visiting from Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho and other western states. The unidentified gentleman behind the wheel of the fire engine may have been one of the many firemen in attendance.

Over 100 firemen posed for a formal group photograph on the roof of the Hotel Winthrop in late July of 1940. From July 31 through August 3rd the 47th annual convention of the Pacific Coast Association of Fire Chiefs was held in Tacoma. Emory N. Whitacker, Tacoma Fire Chief, was convention host to chiefs from Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho and other western states. With wives, guests, and concessionaires, the convention was expected to bring some 1,500 visitors to Tacoma. The Murray Morgan Bridge (11th St. Bridge), the City Waterway (now the Foss Waterway), and several of the prominent buildings on A Street including the Tacoma Building and the Perkins Building can be seen in the background.

The 47th annual convention of the Pacific Coast Association of Fire Chiefs would be held in Tacoma for the first times on July 31 through August 3rd, 1940. Emory N. Whitacker, Tacoma Fire Chief, would play convention host to 500-700 chiefs from Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho and other western states. On September 3, 1941, the volunteers in the Red Cross Sewing room are busy knitting, crocheting and sewing clothes for the European victims of war. The production room, at 721 Commerce St., is buzzing with activity as thousands of garments are being made by the Pierce County Chapter. Volunteers are putting in hundreds of hours in an attempt to reach their January 1, 1942 quota. A plea went out for more volunteers. Pictured are, back row left to right, Mesdames A.W. Paulson, O.R.
