Fred C. Hoffstetter drapes a mink fur around the shoulders of two unidentified "War Stamp Minute Maids." The first big event in connection with the Seventh War Loan campaign was held on May 4, 1945 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop. The program, to raise money for the continuing war, included a fashion show, music, and an auction of over 120 articles donated by Tacoma merchants. Mr. Hoffstetter, owner of the Tacoma Avenue Auction House at 923 So. Tacoma Ave., was the auctioneer for the evening. Admission was by purchase of a $50 bond for $37.50. (TNT, 4/29/1945, p.B-3)

Tacoma boxer Freddie Steele, former middleweight champion, shakes hands with an unidentified man at the Winthrop Hotel during a October 2, 1945, visit to promote the film "The Story of GI Joe" in which he played a shell-shocked Army sergeant. A boxing prodigy by age 15, Freddie Steele would have a long career with only five losses in 133 bouts. He retired from the ring in 1938 after a titanic battle with Seattle's Al Hostak which saw him lose his crown by knockout. Mr. Steele would appear in several films including "Gentleman Jim Corbett" and "Hail the Conquering Hero" after making a brief, unsuccessful boxing comeback in 1941. ALBUM 9.

Bill Edwards plays the piano for Irish tenor Gabe Keith in this photograph from January 1944. Edwards and Keith were two of the performers in a series of shows put on by the employees of the Seattle-Tacoma Ship Building Corp. to support the Fourth War Loan drive. Although most of their performances were to entertain their fellow workers during lunch periods for the first and second shift, they were also invited to perform for the Young Men's Business Club at the Hotel Winthrop. In March of 1945, Reverend George J. G. Grieve, as guest of honor at a program held at the Winthrop Hotel, spoke on the subject "The Britain of the Future". The program was sponsored by the International Services committee and the British Service Club. The entertainment for the day included a variety show presented by this enthusiastic group of young Tacomans. The third girl in from the right in the second row, with a sailors hat, is Dolores Horr. On her left (the second girl in that row) is Gale Gustafson. TPL-8572

Two gentlemen who were present at the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads board of directors luncheon on July 13, 1950, at the Hotel Winthrop, gaze at an enlarged photograph of the newly completed Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed during high winds on November 7, 1940. The man seated at left is C.H. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road.

The Ladies' Musical Club sponsored a concert by Hildegarde, a New York supper club singer who was on a concert tour across the continent, at Temple Theater. She would perform a 2 1/2 hour concert with her 12-piece orchestra. Her program included not the classics but favorites such as, "The Last Time I Saw Paris". She traveled with 35 evening costumes packed in specially built 6-foot trunks but would only be wearing two for her Tacoma appearance. She is seen here looking from the window of her room at the Hotel Winthrop. Tacoma's City Hall can be seen through the window. (TNT, 4/18/1951, p.12)

Eddie Peabody, his banjo and two unidentified Camp Fire Girls at the Winthrop Hotel promoting the mint sale fund raiser. Edwin Ellsworth "Eddie" Peabody was a well known vaudeville star and was in Tacoma at this time as a performer with the Shrine Circus.

Chairman and officers of the Capital District, Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs, in the Daffodil Room at the Hotel Winthrop. A group of seventeen women from the various local garden clubs have gathered for a lunch meeting prior to the opening of the second annual Christmas show by the group, "Twas the Week Before Christmas", held at the Hotel Winthrop. Funds generated from the show were to be used to establish a garden center building fund. More than 85 garden clubs from the district responded with exhibits to the show. All born on March 28, 1949, these six babies celebrated their one year birthday in the Daffodil Room of the Winthrop Hotel, which had its grand opening on the day they were born. Thirteen babies in Tacoma, 9 girls and 4 boys, were born on the same day as the popular restaurant, named for the Puyallup Valley's bright yellow spring flowers. In recognition of this fact, the babies and their parents were invited to be birthday guests of the restaurant. They were also presented with silver piggybanks engraved with their names. Hotel Winthrop was inviting all of Tacoma to join them in the grand opening celebration for the new Trader Vic's Sabre Room. Trader Vic is an internationally known restaurateur, and he has now brought his world famous menu items to Tacoma. The interior of the Sabre Room is modeled after an authentic old English tap room, with figured red carpet, copper bowl lamps, the walls give the impression of aged plaster in a driftwood color. Trader Vic and his wife will host the grand opening celebration.

In January of 1949, Tacoma's "March of Dimes" campaign was beginning their annual solicitation for funds for the nationwide fight against infantile paralysis. Tacoma's Comus Club was hosting their first dance of the year at the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom. The "Switzers" would wear green hats with feathers and greet their guests for the "Alpine Wonderland" dance. The ballroom and buffet table would be decorated with the Swiss Alps, skiers, a lighted medieval castle and other winter Alpine decorations. Jonas and La Verne Bjelland were co-chairmen for the event (T. Times, 1/15/49, p. 6).
