On March 24, 1928, 10,000 cases of eggs were loaded onto the Blue Star liner "Gothicstar" bound for Buenos Aires, Argentina. The eggs were delivered by the Washington Cooperative Egg & Poultry Assn. to its dock, "Co-op Dock" (formerly the Milwaukee dock). "Gothicstar" was one of the biggest refrigerator ships traveling between South America and the United States. It was scheduled to pick up another 40,000 crates of eggs from other ports nearby. This was a new egg market for Northwest producers as previously the East Coast had provided South America with eggs. G6.1-095 (T.Times 3-23-28, p. 10-article)

This ship may be the "Lewis Luckenbach" from the Luckenbach Line which had previously been taking on lumber at the Port of Tacoma dock on June 24, 1924. It has now have moved onto the St. Paul & Tacoma dock for more shipments. The "Lewis Luckenbach," largest vessel of the entire Luckenbach Line, had already loaded 5,780,000 feet of lumber at the Port piers. Another 1,300,000 feet would be taken on board at the St. Paul & Tacoma dock. The lumber would be carried to the Atlantic coast by Captain Read, master of the ship for the last 15 years. The Bienville at finishing dock of Todd Drydock. Once completed, she will have two stacks - one is in position now. The SS Bienville was launched at Todd Drydock & Construction (Shipyards) in Tacoma on July 16, 1924, less than five months after her keel was laid. She was built for the Atlantic Steamship lines of Southern Pacific. The combination freight and passenger vessel, 445 feet in length, had accommodations for 236 first class passengers and 110 third class passengers. The ship was sponsored by Dorothy Maxson, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. C.P. Maxson; Maxson was the commodore of Southern Pacific lines and would be the ship's master. The Bienville was expected to be delivered to Southern Pacific's New York location on December 7, 1924. She was the 38th big ship built in Todd yards since the shipyard's 1917 establishment. During the war era of 1917-20, Todd built 32 steel freight vessels for the U.S. Shipping Board. (TNT 7-16-24, p. 1; TNT 9-18-24, p. 5) G50.1-090

The steamer "Santa Inez" at Tidewater Mill. On August 21, 1921, the "Santa Inez" was docked at the Tidewater Mill, 3901 E. 11th St., located on the east side of the Hylebos Waterway. She was being loaded with timber, probably similar to the logs floating in the photograph's foreground. An additional stop for the ship was the St. Paul dock for more lumber loading. The "Santa Inez" sailed for San Pedro on August 24th. G49.1-079 (TDL 8-23-21, p. 7-article)

The "Infallible," an 86-foot diesel cannery tender, was launched on June 19, 1936 at Western Boat. An unidentified woman, in a long floral -patterned gown and dark hat, was the sponsor of the event. She is pictured holding a bouquet of assorted blossoms as she reaches to officially launch the vessel. G37.1-133

Pre-launching of the vessel "Ambassador," as viewed in September of 1919. She was built for the Chichagof Mining Company of Alaska. The power tender "Ambassador" was launched at 5 p.m. on September 11th from the ways of Tacoma Shipbuilding Co. She would be used in connection with the Chichagof mines in southeastern Alaska. The ship's sponsor was Mrs. W.R. Rust whose husband was one of the principal owners of the mines. G37.1-120 (T.Times 9-13-19, p. 14-article)

Sea trials. The tuna seiner, "Anne M," proceeded with sea trials in mid-September, 1969. She had a frozen fish capacity of 650-ton and was skippered by Captain Frank Souza. Built by Martinac Shipbuilding, the 1.5 million dollar vessel ran on a 20 cylinder 2800 h.p. diesel engine. She was completely carpeted in the living quarters of the skipper and 14-man crew and was equipped with air conditioning. The 165-foot tuna seiner had a frozen fish capacity of 650-ton. Owned by Joseph and Edmund Gann of San Diego, the "Polaris" would be used for fishing in South America and Africa. Aquarius. The fishing boat, "Aquarius," is pictured undergoing sea trials on February 20, 1971. She was built by the J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp. and launched on December 5, 1970. Sea trials. The "Denise Marie," 225-foot tuna seiner, during sea trials prior to the ship being turned over to her San Diego owners. Grain ship at Continental Grain. Flying under the Indian flag, the "Abul Kalam Azad" arrived in Tacoma in August of 1975 to load 105,000 long tons of wheat, believed to be the largest single shipment of grain ever loaded by a single company at a U.S. port. The Continental Grain Co. elevator, with its off-shore pier, was completed earlier in the spring. Its 60-ton, 169-foot long steel gallery could whisk up to 80,000 bushels (about 2000 tons) of grain per hour from the elevator to the ship. At $19,000,000, the grain elevator was the single largest project ever undertaken by the Port of Tacoma. It was built along Bayside Dr. (now Schuster Parkway) at the old Shaffer dock site. ca. 1971. The "Eileen M" slices through the smooth waters of Commencement Bay during sea trials. The "Eileen M," 225-foot steel tuna seiner, underwent extensive sea trials before her October, 1971, delivery to her San Diego owners. She had been launched on August 21, 1971, by Tacoma Boatbuilding.

Old Coal Bunkers at Tacoma, W.T.

Three-masted ship "Eldorado" at old coal bunkers, Tacoma, Washington Territory, circa 1885. These are believed to be the Northern Pacific coal bunkers projecting into Commencement bay that were completed in 1882 at a cost of $250,000 and considered at that time to be the most modern of their type on the North Pacific Coast. PG-92 at Tacoma Boatbuilding. The USS Tacoma, a patrol gunboat, had been launched in April of 1968. The above photograph was taken about six months later as the vessel was undergoing further work. She would be commissioned in July of 1969.

Crew of the American freighter "Wildwood". Crew posed for portrait on wharf with hull of ship as background. The freighter, owned by the American Steamship Co., had turned around mid Pacific and returned to Tacoma to unload its "hot" cargo. The cargo consisted of copper, brass, and machinery intended for Russia.

Loading of Norwegian motorship "Nordhval" with scrap streetcar tracks for shipment to Japan. Man pushing tracks over rail into hold of ship. Japan, at war with China, would not say what the 2,500 tons of scrap metal in the shipment would be used for. Over 1/2 of the scrap came from the useless ties in the TR & P Bay street yards. The streetcars had been discontinued in Tacoma in June of 1938. (T.Times, 10/17/1938, p. 5).

In October of 1938 the Norwegian motorship "Nordhval," bound for Japan, was being loaded with old streetcar rails at the Shaffer Terminals, Dock No. 2 on Tacoma's waterfront. Two men operate cranes as another man watches the rails being loaded. Tacoma's last streetcar had been taken out of service in April of 1938 as the old method of travel was replaced with city buses. Street railroad tracks were only a portion of the 2,500 tons of scrap metal assembled from various parts of the Northwest that were being sent to Japan aboard the "Nordhval." Her dinghy has been hauled up and is stored above the lower cabin. There is a large, covered area on the back for comfortable enjoyment of a day on the water.

Tacoma Yacht Club was sponsoring the Daffodil Yacht Races on the Daffodil Festival weekend. The first leg of the race was from Old Tacoma to Port Piers on Commencement Bay, then back to the starting point. A total of 11 entries participated in the Class A race, and 4 entries raced in Class B. All sailors celebrated after the races in the Captain's Lounge of the Tacoma Yacht Club (T.N.T., 4/11/49, p. 16).

Feminine personnel on evening cruise on Mr. Cummings boat, Wheeler Osgood. The women wave and bask in the warm summer evening while they speed across the water in the 36 foot wooden yacht, the "Challenger". The Challenger was built by Fred Cummings and Charles Brooks of the Sound Boating Company. She had 115 hp twin engines and cruised at 20 mph. The Challenger was launched 4 weeks earlier and was docked at Old Tacoma Boat Mart. The women were embarked for Cross' Landing on Vashon Island this evening. (T.Times, 8/18/1947, p.3)

Times. The Gretna Victory, the Northwest Christmas ship, docked in Tacoma briefly for loading the contributions from Tacomans to the suffering peoples of Germany and Austria. The ship was filled with contributions from four northwestern states and Alaska including food, clothing and messages of hope for Europe. The Young Men's Business Council planned a gala welcome and farewell for the ship's officers and crew. Captain H.C. Gibbs is seen here seated with a smiling woman on his lap and his chief officer, L. Warren is standing in the back accepting a hug from another smiling woman. The two women and other man were not identified. (TNT, 1/31/1948, p.1)
