A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

Pacific Lutheran College faculty committee for social activities was organizing a formal reception to welcome new and returning students. Three hundred freshmen and hundreds of students from the other classes were expected to attend. Dr. S. C. Eastvold was President of Pacific Lutheran College in 1947. Pacific Lutheran College was formally founded in 1891, when the first cornerstone was laid. The school was well established within a few years, and after World War II enrollment dramatically increased and the school grounds expanded. Lea, Pearson and Richards were the architects that designed PLC's Memorial Gymnasium. The dedication ceremonies were planned for December of this year. On October 16, 1947 College of Puget Sound officials and West Disinfecting Company representatives inspected the newly refinished gym floor in the CPS Gymnasium which had originally been built in 1924. The floor had been re-done and coated with "lastincote" for durability. Left to right, A. R. Emerson, W. R. Palling, Gerard Banks, W. E. Patrick, Alice C. Bond and John Heinrick. The CPS gymnasium was now ready for indoor sports to begin.

College of Puget Sound, ordered by Dr. Thompson. Dr. Edward H. Todd sits at a desk writing. He was president emeritus of the college at this time. Dr. Todd served as president of the college for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942. Prior to becoming associated with educational work of the Methodist Church, Dr. Todd was a minister of that denomination for 19 years. The men's dormitory was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948. (T.Times, 6i/8/1942)

ca. 1948. Christie Walker points out a "favorite" child among a photograph of French orphans to interested donors; Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California executive, stands at her side. C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts. Pacific Lutheran College's new Memorial Gymnasium had recently been dedicated and the first basketball game had been played here. Pacific Lutheran's new gymnasium was used by the women's and men's basketball teams. The gymnasium was one of the most modern gyms of its type, and one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. The impressive new Science Hall at Pacific Lutheran College was in full operation, classes from the natural sciences department were being taught and departmental offices were relocated into the new building. ca. 1947. Construction photograph of Pacific Lutheran College's Memorial Gymnasium, ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. The gymnasium was dedicated in December of 1947 and built from a design by Lea, Pearson & Richards, architects. A new gymnasium had been planned as early as 1944, and postponed by the war. A fire of unknown origin razed the old gym in 1946 and brought new urgency to the construction of the new gymnasium. The new building was a part of the move toward capital expansion, headed up by College president Dr. Seth Eastvold, president from 1943-1962.

CPS Homecoming Parade, Times, buzz. The College of Puget Sound Homecoming Parade was held November 6, 1948, from Union Station up Pacific Avenue and Stadium Way to Stadium Bowl before the Homecoming football game. Prizes were awarded to the fraternity that entered the oldest car and to the fraternity with the best decorated float. Individual prizes were given to best clown or pair of clowns. The sign hanging on the side of the truck on loan from Griffin Fuel Company shown here says, "I may be old but I'm here with bells" . The building that can be seen in the background is at 1754 Pacific Ave. It is now part of the University of Washington Tacoma campus. (T.Times, 11/5/1948, p.1) TPL-8690

Layout on Beaux Arts Ball, Times, Mrs. MacDonald. Students at the College of Puget Sound enjoyed a masquerade ball given in honor of forieign students by Alpha Rho Tau, the art honorary. The event was described as spectacular. A young man wearing a cardboard cage is lying on a table while another student wearing a doctor's stethoscope evaluates his condition. Several interiors at CPS, Murtough Supply, Frank Murtough. Murtough Supply Company, owned by Frank J. Murtough, handled cleaning supplies and equipment and were distributors of Franklin's R.G. Products, Clarke & Finnell Floor Machines and Multi-Clean Vacuums. They were located at 706 Pacific Avenue. This interior view features an open hallway with seating, an elaborately carved side table, a portrait of a man wearing academic robes, and a grandfather clock. Draperies are closed over the windows. College of Puget Sound. Head Coach John Heinrick (second row, far right) is taking his entire squad of 1948 football players to San Jose for their pre-season game against the San Jose Spartans. This was the last game prior to the start of the Evergreen Conference season. The highly favored San Jose came from behind to beat the Loggers 20-7. Pacific Lutheran College offered their students an "Education for Life" and "Build for Character". They had programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Training, Music, Parish Work, Pre-Medical, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Theology and Pre-Law. Pacific Lutheran College had brought a lot of benefits to the Parkland community. CPS. The College of Puget Sound SPURS hosted the regional meeting of SPURS, the national women's honorary service organization, March 5, 6, and 7, 1948, on the CPS campus. Members from Washington, Oregon and Montana attended. Three main topics were discussed: new member selection, activities and expansion of activities. The two seated flower girls have been identified as Margaret Ronning and Judy Leraas, daughters of PLC professors. The little girl standing next to Queen Catherine has been identified as Anne Malmin Berg. The dais has been decorated with potted palms and blooming boughs. Gaily decorated box lunches for two are auctioned off at the annual old fashioned Box Lunch Social in the main lounge of the Student Union building at Pacific Lutheran College. The event where coeds prepare elaborately designed containers with meals to be purchased by and consumed with the highest collegiate bidder was sponsored by the Lutheran Students Association with proceeds going to charity.

Dr. Seth Eastvold, President of Pacific Lutheran College, and bronze dedication plaque hung mid February 1950 on the front exterior wall of the Student Union Building. The plaque cites the donors that made the construction of the building possible. The Student Union Building housed many of the students' activities and included such facilities as the main auditorium, organ practice rooms, college bookstore, general lounge, coffee shop and several offices. Dr. Eastvold's administration, 1943-1962, was characterized by capital expansion. (TNT 2-26-1950 A-10)

The library was designed by local Tacoma architect Emanuel J. Bresemann and was dedicated in 1939 and remodeled in the late forties. In the late forties and fifties, the College grew greatly, both in student body and in capital expansion. TPL-9329
