Rainbow Convention. Pierce County Rainbow Girls hosted the 21st annual session of the Grand Assembly of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls June 22, 23 and 24, 1947. 1,500 girls from Washington, Idaho and Alaska met for the 25th anniversary of Rainbow in Washington State. Fifteen young women wearing floor length gowns and heart-shaped hats. A piano and flower decorations can be seen on the stage behind them. (T.Times, 6/19/1947)

Benbow Lakes, Red Cross Aquatic School for the Northwest, 75 men and 56 women. The Red Cross Pierce County Chapter held a 10-day aquatic safety school with 131 men and women from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Montana at Benbow Lakes, Kapowsin, Washington. It was one of six such schools operated by the Red Cross in the United States. The canoe in this photograph has been identified as a Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits at their shop on Day Island. The canoe features a full sailing rig also built by the brothers. Eastern Star Convention at Armory. Mrs. Eva Holland Hamilton of Chicago is on the right. She was the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter and was a visitor throughout the 59th annual session of Order of the Eastern Star held in Tacoma in June 1947. Mrs. Stephen J. Chadwick of Olympia, a past Most Worthy Matron of the General Grand Chapter, was affectionately known as "the First Lady" in Washington Eastern Star. She is wearing an overblouse of lace and crochet. Eastern Star Convention at the New Yorker Cafe, Margaret Kinnich. The Grand Chapter of Washington Order of Eastern Star held its session in Tacoma June 19 - 21, 1947. More than 2,000 members and guests were expected from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and British Columbia. A banquet was held at the New Yorker for past grand matrons and past grand patrons at the New Yorker. (T.Times, 6/12/1947, p.10) Format 6" x 10".

On March 7, 1943, the members of the fraternal order of Eagles turned out in force at "Scrap Iron Acres," Pierce County's salvage depot near the Pacific Match Co. at 3223 So. Union. They were volunteering their time to help sort some of the 3,000 tons of salvage metal and load steel onto a railroad car for transport to a Seattle Steel mill. By the end of the day 65 tons of steel was on its way to be converted to tools of war. (T. Times 3/8/1943, pg. 1)

After one railroad car was filled with scrap steel on March 7, 1943, the volunteers from the Eagles pushed it to another location to wait for transport to a Seattle steel mill. Installation of officers at Rudder Club. Posed against the flocked wallpaper of the Rudder Club are its new officers, installed February 23, 1943. The Rudder Club is believed to be a forerunner of the Propeller Club. It was a social club formed around August of 1942 and it catered primarily to shipyard employees. Mrs. James Hayes, made up in black face, remarks in the mirror at her resemblance to the "Mammy" doll sitting on the dressing table. The dolls were made by the Spinster Club members to decorate the tables at their 5th annual Dixie Ball in May of 1943. The other two women are Katherine Foss and Penny (Mrs.H. J.) Croteau. The ball would be held at the Roof Garden at the Hotel Winthrop. The 1943 ball was a benefit for the Army/ Navy Relief Fund. (T.Times 5/5/1943,pg.4)

During WWII, the USOs in Tacoma did much more then sponsor dances and provide "r and r" for the troops at home - as important as those services were. This photograph from January 1943 shows "mending night" at the Tacoma USO at 415 So. 13th St. Trousers were hemmed, patches were sewn on, and caps were mended with a motherly touch and a warm smile. Left to right, back row: Mrs. John Troutt is doing some mending for Seaman Chuck McCoy while PFC Richard Botelho looks on; next is Pvt. Andrew Motes. Front row: Seaman 1st Class Dean McCullough holds the spool of thread while Mrs. Ethyle Ferris mends his cap. Marcella (Mrs. Frank) LaFleur is seen at the sewing machine and Corp. Lifesaving and water safety were among the many skills taught at the special Benbow Lake Red Cross Training Center at Kapowsin in July of 1947. 112 high school students from 45 Red Cross chapters in Canada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington were sent for the special 12 day training session, including Nancy Hobbs from Tacoma and Harry Butts from Sumner. The young people sent to the camp were chosen for their known fidelity to Red Cross service and fitness for leadership. (Young people and instructor in photo not identified.) Emily Walker is the advertising chairman for the Junior League Follies of 1947 to be presented November 12th and 13th. Mrs. Young is chair for the project. The purpose of the follies for 1947 was to raise funds for the Tacoma Occupational Therapy Workshop. It had been twenty years since the Tacoma Junior League had put on a follies. Al Miller, Howard Grant and Herman Tietje (left to right) were three of the first members of the Stereotypers and Electrotypers Union Local No. 91 in Tacoma, when it was organized forty years ago. Bartenders at the Wild West Veteran's Club in Nov. 1947. The club was affiliated with VFW Wild West Post No. 91. It was located in the Crawford's Sea Grill Restaurant Building at 505 Broadway. Wild West Veteran's Club was affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wild West Post Number 91. The club was only listed in the 1947 Tacoma City Directory at this location, in the 1949 Tacoma City Directory the club is listed as being located at 260 South 5th Street. Wild West Club was located in Crawford's Sea Grill Restaurant, a two story concrete blocks and glass, 275 person capacity building. Crawford's became very popular with Tacoma residents and tourists, especially after they added a unique terrace room in 1950. They completely enclosed a room with glass, which hung over Stadium Way, overlooking Commencement Bay. View of piano player at the Wild West Club.

Exterior view of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174. The Elks building had just been painted and repaired, additional remodeling would also be done on the interior of the building. Elks members chose this site in 1914 and it was officially opened in 1916. The stairs are spanish style and have a decorative balustrade between Broadway and Commerce Street. The style of the building could be classified as part of the Beaux-Arts movement with many classical and renaissance features including the symmetrical facade, grand arched openings, medallions and decorative swags. The Elks relocated to a new temple on So. Union Ave. in 1965.

Permanente Metals was an aluminum producing plant, the demand for aluminum and aluminum made products had dramatically increased since the end of World War II. Aluminum products could be found in kitchens, automobiles, airplanes, luggage, homes and many other areas; aluminum offered durability yet was extremely light weight and versatile. Permanente Metals had started operations in Tacoma in late October of this year. Permanente Metals employees in plant's pot room, the white powdery substance is alumina, which is discharged into the reduction pots, the molten aluminum is siphoned from the pots into large capacity ladles, photo ordered by United Steel Workers of America.

Forty Women at Masonic Temple, Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell. The Zora Temple No. 5, Daughters of the Nile, were honored by the official visit of the supreme queen, Mrs. Ray Hoble of Rockford, Illinois. The decorating committee chose an oriental theme. The program included an exhibition drill by the Egyptian patrol and the dancing girls presented an Egyptian number. These women are wearing a variety of costumes and stand on the stage at the Masonic Temple. The formation of the Daughters of the Nile originated in the home of Mrs. Mable R. Krows, Seattle, Washington. She and a number of other Shriners' wives on February 20, 1913, formed the Ladies of the Nile Club.
