Portrait of Judge Arthur W. Verharen. Arthur W. Verharen was named to the Pierce County Superior Court by Governor Dixy Lee Ray in early December, 1977. At age 37, he would be the youngest Pierce County Superior Court judge when he was sworn in on January 3, 1978. Judge Verharen had been a District Court judge prior to his appointment. 1978 Daffodil Festival Parade. The Olympic Arabian Pleasure Horse Club members and their nine pure or one-half Arabian horses moved majestically down Pacific Avenue during the 1978 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade. The riders hail from the Bremerton area. They wear attractive costumes that are handmade. The Olympic Arabian Pleasure Horse Club would win third place in the Mounted Units category. They were one of the 13 horse units entered in the parade.

She was a graduate of Tacoma Community College and was Miss TCC for 1969-70. Delores K. Winston and Steven Edward Pitts would be married at St. John Baptist Church in 1978. 1978 Daffodil Festival Parade. Performing before spectators lined several feet deep along Pacific Avenue were the 90-piece marching band members from Gov. John R. Rogers High School of Puyallup. Brilliant sunshine and low 50 degree weather greeted participants in the 45th Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Parade. The Rogers High School band was led by director Gary Jacobson (possibly the man walking in the foreground) and would perform two numbers.

Work continues on part of the massive Lakewood-Parkland sewer system in late March of 1978. A Montana firm, Felton Construction, had been awarded a $2.4 million dollar contract to handle part of the project in Parkland. A local company, Tucci & Sons, would work in the Custer area under a $1.87 million dollar contract. The photograph above is believed to be of Felton employees as they inspect the large sewer pipe nearly buried in the wide ditch. Photograph ordered by Felton Construction Co., Missoula, Montana.

1978 Daffodil Festival Parade. The Judges Trophy for originality was awarded to the Orting Community's entry in the 1978 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade. It was one of the 33 floats entered in the parade. Orting had selected the theme "Lighter than Air" which was aptly displayed by the use of three flowered hot-air balloons floating on large white clouds. Several young ladies in pastels and white, possibly seniors at Orting High School, graced the float. The float measured 42-feet long, 11-feet wide and 13-feet high with some 35,000 white daffodils. The News Tribune noted in its front page parade article that it was a "crowd favorite." (TNT 4-9-78, A-1)

1978 Daffodil Festival Parade. The 30-member drill team from Gov. John R. Rogers High School in Puyallup march proudly down Pacific Avenue during the April, 1978, Daffodil Festival Parade. The school's 90-piece marching band follows. The Rogers High School entry was one of 12 marching units and drill teams participating in the parade.

Sewers were also being installed in alleys as well as main streets during the massive Lakewood-Parkland sewer project in the summer of 1978. A large crane appears to be in the process of scooping out piles of dirt while a Felton Construction Co. employee is still inside the deep ditch. This young man in stocking feet is poised to make a run in the annual Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament coming up in early February of 1979 at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Passing of the gavel. New officers of the Homebuilders Association of Greater Tacoma were installed in ceremonies held at Fort Steilacoom Community College (now Pierce College) on December 2, 1978. Well-known boxing coach Joe Clough (seated) poses with Tacoma Athletic Commission member Scotty Weinstone in early January of 1979. The T.A.C. would once again be hosting the annual Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament the following month. Mr. Clough had been associated for many years with the Tacoma Boys Club where he coached Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Seales. He was now coaching the Olympic Boxing Academy of Bremerton. Bathroom in model home. "Panorama One" was Crest Builders' entry for the 1979 Tacoma Home Show. This is a view of the luxurious bathroom believed to be part of the master bedroom in the 4,800 square foot home. The bathtub and tiled shower were separated with an abundance of foliage adjoining the tub. A handy portable towel rack was set next to the tub. Ceiling skylights and etched leaded glass accented the large bathroom. The master bath also contained walk-in closets, a linen closet, separate vanities and a Jacuzzi. Thick carpeting covered the floor. "Panorama One" was the largest model home of the three constructed for the Home Show. It was located in the Summerset subdivision overlooking the Narrows in Northwest Tacoma. Photograph ordered by the Homebuilders Association of Greater Tacoma. Copy of customer's print. This display on the back of a truck urgently implored potential customers to purchase products made of alder timber, readily available in Washington state. This would help the state's economy by keeping residents' money in-state. Buffelen Lumber & Mfg. Co. advised that they would "show you here how valuable it is."
