Tacoma Open Golf Tournament at Fircrest, Tacoma Athletic Commission, Bob Sanders.The Tacoma Open Golf Tournament opened at the Fircrest Golf Club for a four-day event starting September 17, 1948. The tournament attracted a large gallery and people can be seen here following the players to the next green. A $12,500 purse would go to the winner. (TNT, 9/17/1948, p.14)

(Eagles) Lodge is in center background. Governor Wallgren subsequently attended an Eagles meeting where he addressed fellow members. Series ordered, but not used, by Life Magazine. ALBUM 10. Patrons report the upside-down "Mark's Used Cars" sign was intentional--and one of many unusual ploys by the business to get customers into the lot.

Governor Mon C. Wallgren meets and greets members of the Olympia Eagles Lodge #21 on October 1, 1948. Governor Wallgren was running for re-election that year and the visit to the Olympia Eagles was preceded by a parade on East 4th Avenue. He was a card-carrying member of the Eagles as well as many other civic and military organizations. Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Wallgren served as U.S. Congressman from the 2nd District and U.S. Senator before being elected to the governor's office in late 1944. He was to serve one term before being defeated in his re-election bid by Arthur B. Langlie. ALBUM 10.

Portrait of Governor Mon C. Wallgren while he was attending a meeting of the Olympia Eagles. Governor Wallgren was in the midst of a re-election campaign in late 1948; as a member of the Eagles, he may have been asking for their support in the upcoming November elections. A very experienced legislator, Mr. Wallgren was to lose the election to Arthur B. Langlie, Republican. In later years, Mr. Wallgren was to serve on the Federal Power Commission, engage in citrus growing and the development of uranium claims in California. He died in Olympia on September 18, 1961, due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident. ALBUM 10.

Governor Mon C. Wallgren addresses the Olympia Eagles at their Lodge. A Democrat, he was nearing the end of his re-election campaign. He lost to his predecessor, Arthur B. Langlie, in the November, 1948, elections, by approximately 28,000 votes. Series ordered, but not used, by Life Magazine.

L-R, Margaret Keys and Dorothy Sweet from Lincoln High School are choosing books that may soon go to nursery schools. In October of 1948, Fay O. Morrison (far right), Russell Leach (next to Fay O.) and two unidentified mechanics had their photograph taken in front of the M & M Garage at 6647 South Tacoma Way. Owned and operated by Earl M. and Fay O. Morrison (the two Ms of M & M), the M & M Garage was in business from 1947 until it was sold in the early 1950's, and became Kimball's Service Station. The old mechanic with a cigar in his mouth may be Vernon Beck. (Names of men in photograph supplied by Fay O. Morrison's son.)

Fair booth, Nalley's, Mr. Willis. Nalley's' Tacoma location was 3410 South Lawrence Street. The front of Nalley's display at the Puyallup Fair this year featured a heavy line that formed a circle at one end, an arch highlighting a separate display of foods, ran under the sales counter and ended in a curl. A woman stands behind the counter ready to assist fair goers. Photographs of the processing at Nalley's plant hang above shelves of Tang salad dressing, pickles, beef stew, chili, mustard, horseradish, ketchup and hamburger relish. A sign hangs out over the archway again advertising Nalleys. "If it's Nalley's it's good" was their motto. TPL-5910

The Tacoma Times newspaper carriers invited the Vancouver, British Columbia, Sun newspaper carriers baseball team to a game and picnic at Titlow Park in Tacoma on Sunday afternoon. The Suns are at bat and they had led the game until the 5th inning when Tacoma took charge. Tacoma won 18-10. After the game the two teams and almost 100 Times carriers enjoyed a picnic at the park. Ordered by Tacoma Times, Mr. Cochran.

Permanente's First Anniversary, Permanente Metals, Bill Gorman. A family enjoys hot dogs during the celebration at Permanente on October 27, 1948. The older girl sits on a stack of aluminum pigs that have been produced at the plant. The woman holds a baby with one arm and her hot dog in her other hand. An overflowing crowd of over 5000 filled the State Armory to the rafters to hear California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice. Local Republicans had anticipated large crowds to hear the popular governor; an additional 1000 seats were borrowed from the College of Puget Sound and the Seattle Armory. Oversized posters of Governor Warren and Presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey decorated the Armory walls. California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, and wife Nina blow out candles on their 23rd anniversary cake during a campaign appearance on October 14, 1948 in Tacoma . Four of the Warren children, Dorothy, Virginia, Nina Elizabeth and Bobby, smilingly look on. Acting Mayor C.A. Erdahl presented the cake to the Warrens following the conclusion of Governor Warren's address at the State Armory. It came as a complete surprise to the Warrens, causing Governor Warren to make an inadvertent slip of the tongue when he stated " I'm not quite as nervous as I was 14 years ago," before his family and the crowd's hearty laughter caused him to correct himself. California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, greets an unidentified young supporter on October 14, 1948 during a campaign appearance in Tacoma. Prior to his selection as Thomas E. Dewey's running mate in the 1948 elections, Mr. Warren had been both a California district attorney and that state's Attorney General. He was the only person in California history to be elected to three successive terms as Governor; in 1946 he was unopposed in the general election, as he had won the nomination of the Democratic, the Republican, and the Progressive parties. The 1948 presidential election was the only election he ever lost. He resigned during his third term as Governor when he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Eisenhower in 1953. ALBUM 2.

Aerial progress photograph of Tacoma Drug Company. The company was building their new facility on the Tacoma tideflats. The company expected to begin operations here in March 1949. Building costs were estimated at $400,000 with 70,000 square feet on one floor. The Austin Company were the contractors. Just above Tacoma Drug Wesley Crawford & Son are building a new facility for their wholesale produce company and West Coast Grocery is seen in the upper left corner.

Mr. and Mrs. Puran Sawhney of India wearing Indian costumes, Tacoma Times, Mrs. Mac Donald. Mr. and Mrs. Puran Sawhney were on their first visit to the United States from their home in New Dehli, India. They arrived in New York, bought an automobile in Detroit, employed a driver and were seeing the country with their small son and his nurse. Mr. Sawhney was interested in American industry and wanted to see the timber industry of the Northwest. James and Elizabeth Wilhelmi hosted dinner for the Sawhneys at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club September 8, 1948. Mrs. Sawhney is seen wearing a richly colored purple Sari and Mr. Sawhney is wearing western clothing. The young woman with them is not identified. (T.Times, 9/8/1948, p.6)

Home portrait of Mrs Schneider, Anderson Hall, CPS, Mrs. Hosmer, News Tribune. Mrs. Carolyn Schneider was the head of the Tacoma Art League who had galleries in Jones Hall at the College of Puget Sound. She was also the housemother for Anderson Hall, a women's dormitory on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. She stands by a bookcase with a drawing of a goat above it. This is an alternate view of Supreme Cleaners, 1012 Center St., as photographed on September 25, 1948. See D35459, image 5, for close-up of drive-in side. Supreme Cleaners was affiliated with Superior Service Laundry at 2011 South Tacoma Way as both were owned/operated by the same individuals: F.J. Meyer, president and W.C. Miller, vice president. Supreme Cleaners opened in April of 1934 in this large concrete plant. A billboard on one side of the two-story structure emphasized the care Supreme Cleaners would show to fur garments including storage, restyling, cleaning and repairing. On October 2, 1948 the new Thom McAn Shoe Store in downtown Tacoma drew the biggest opening day crowd of any Thom McAn store on the Pacific coast. Harry B. Greene, the stores manager (far left) said, "The crowds came all day and the store was filled to capacity from the opening hour". Located at 958 Pacific Avenue, in the Rust Building, the Tacoma store was the first Thom McAn Shoe Store in Washington.

Puyallup Avenue Bridge (Seattle-Tacoma) to show paint job, Parker Paint, Mr. Martin. The Puyallup Avenue Bridge is a part of Washington State Highway 99 connecting Seattle and Tacoma and crossing the Puyallup River just east of Tacoma and south of the Tacoma tideflats. Parker Paint was manufactured in Tacoma.

Congressman Thor Tollefson on the extreme right. As Election Day drew near, both parties were making concentrated efforts in an attempt to sway voters. Governor Warren had already visited 31 states during speaking engagements and he was to make quick stops in northwest cities of Everett, Seattle, Spokane, Centralia, Kelso, Vancouver, Portland and Eugene before finally heading home to the governor's mansion in Sacramento. Men on horseback jumping hurdles during the Woodbrook Hunt Club's winter drag hunt. A. Burwood Kennedy is on the right riding "Jeep." Unseen is Cyrus Happy III, riding "Kay Boy," on the left. Both riders are wearing traditional riding garb and are riding English saddles. A drag hunt is where the riders follow behind the hounds; the animals following a scent that has been literally dragged along the ground. The hunt requires that the hunters and their mounts be able to follow at a good clip and jump. (TNT, 10/24/1948, p.D-1)

Associated Oil Service Stations. Charlie Walker's Associated Service, station #634. Walker's Associated Service stands at the corner of 56th and Pacific Avenue. Cosmic Cleaners is next door at 5433 Pacific Avenue and Kempinsky's Bi-Rite Drugs is at 5431 Pacific Avenue. An older automobile is parked next to the station while another sits ready for filling. The two garage doors to the service area are open. TPL-1889

The Associated Oil Service Stations at 5525 Pacific Ave., station #634, was known as Charlie Walker's Associated Service Station in 1948 when this photograph was taken. This distinctive looking station was built in 1934 for Emil Muscek. It was designed by A. Gordon Lumm following the architectural ideas presented at the Century of Progress. Walker's Associated Service Station closed in the late '60s. TPL-1887
