This is what the 112th & Meridian area looked like in early 1972. The South Hill Mall would be built 16 years later on Meridian. What is noticeable is the large amount of woods and relatively few homes. Aerial photograph ordered by Puget Sound National Bank.

The new Allstate Insurance Co. building was located on the southwest corner of Ferry and South 48th St., across the street from the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center. Construction of Allstate's district office had been completed in four months. The Jack A. Benaroya Co. was the $200,000 structure's builder. Photograph ordered by Allstate Insurance Co.

An Allstate Insurance Co. employee adjusts the weekly "Drive-In Schedule" located in the company's new district office building at 2102 So. 48th St. The $200,000 one-story structure was completed in a mere four months after ground was broken on August 31, 1971. Staff of Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House. In 1972, Crystal Corbin (far left) and Susan Pettit (far right) were hostesses at the new restaurant with the long name - Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House - located on Ruston Way. Beth Pritchard (third from right) was one of the waitresses. Employees of Clinkerdagger's wore outfits reminiscent of pub fashions worn in London of the 1800's. Many of the young ladies shown above in April of 1972, shortly after the restaurant's opening, were students at the University of Puget Sound. Customers at Honan's Restaurant, 737-41 Saint Helens Avenue in Tacoma, were invited to help chose the popular restaurant's "Irish Rose" during their 3-day Saint Patrick's Day celebration in 1972. Each cash register receipt was good for one vote until 10 pm on Thursday, March 16; the queen would be named and crowned an hour later. Bob Honan, his back to the camera, tended bar in front of the contestants' names and large photographs. The women competing for the title were: (l to r) Sherrie Connolly, Monica Michel and Colleen O'Brien. Unfortunately, there was no mention found in the News Tribune of the outcome of this competition. On the 17th, Honan's made their annual Saint Patrick Day's transatlantic phone call to the restaurant's namesake in Ennis, County Clare. Three tow trucks are parked side-by-side at Fife Towing in early March of 1972. Fife Towing offered 24-hr. towing and also insured complete auto repair. According to an entry in the 1972 City Directory, the company had dispatched emergency road service. Fife Towing was located at 4310 Pacific Hwy. E. in Fife. Studio set-up of fish bait. "Uncle Brad's Mini-Mallows," although listed as marshmallows, were not for human consumption. The mini-mallows were fish bait packed by the Olympic Fish Products, Inc., of Tacoma. The bait weighed 2.5 oz. and was packed in a see-through plastic container. Tacomans were urged in early 1972 to help out victims of kidney disease by purchasing a special "K" button. The dollar spent would pay for two hours of the artificial kidney program under the auspices of the Northwest Kidney Center. Two unidentified men are pictured on February 3, 1972, exchanging a check for buttons. Later in the month the kidney machine would be on display in a donated van at the Pacific National Bank of Washington Plaza Building. While there dialysis patients would explain how the machine is used. Most patients needed to be on the machine three times a week for 8-10 hours at a time. Unidentified golf foursome. Western Washington pro golfers and club presidents gathered on Friday, April 28, 1972, at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club to participate in the Northwest Pro-Presidents golf tournament. This year each of the three branches in the northwest section of the PGA will have its own tournament. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club was the location of the first Northwest Pro-Presidents tournament in 1953. Color photograph ordered by Gerry Mehlert. Gantry crane at Star Iron & Steel. Gantry cranes were similar to overhead cranes except that the bridge for carrying trolley or trolleys is not movable and is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on fixed rails or other runways. Star Iron & Steel of Tacoma had been a longtime presence in the Tideflats and manufactured cranes, hoists and special machinery. Photograph ordered by Glen Graves Advertising.

Before products manufactured by Star Iron & Steel Co. of Tacoma were released to their buyers, they underwent stringent testing to insure quality control. Magenta model home. Located in the Oxford development in Old Steilacoom, the "Magenta," built by Leroy Crest of Crest Builders and open for touring during the 1972 Tacoma Home Show, fit snugly close to the ground on a wooded lot with landscaped front and back yards. Extensive amounts of beauty bark have been utilized to present a pleasing appearance. The L-shaped home came equipped with a double-car garage. Living room - "Barcelona" model home. The luxury home's living room is alive with colors of vibrant red and gold. Comfortable gold and white stuffed chairs and an extended patterned couch with accents of red and gold along with an ornate glass table with gold-toned supports make this sitting area a most pleasant spot to enjoy a drink or converse with friends. The wall-to-wall carpet is also deep red in tone, a color which is picked up by the window valances. The "Barcelona" was available for touring during the 26th annual Tacoma Home Show, March 28th-April 4th of 1972. Located in a "semi-custom" development near Chambers Creek Road in University Place, the home was listed for a then pricey $50,000. Studio portrait of Walter Matheson. He posed with his hands on his guitar. Mr. Matheson wore a turtleneck sweater and light colored slacks. A similar pose was used in a News Tribune ad for the Cortina Villa restaurant dated July 14, 1972, where he was then performing. Viva paper towel display. A Park & Shop customer accepts a roll of Viva paper towels on April 25, 1972, from an unidentified man who is possibly the store manager. Viva was issuing a challenge to customers to compare their product with others; the customer would either get a free big roll of Viva if she hadn't tried it before or if already a Viva buyer, get a free roll with the purchase of one roll. The new addition to the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center is rapidly taking shape as this July 5, 1972, progress photograph indicates. The Rushforth Construction Co. were the contractors on this $2,500,000 project to expand the shopping center on its west side. June 1, 1972, progress photograph of a $2,500,000 addition to the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center. The expanded section on the west side of the shopping center was expected to add another 25 stores. The Mall had 85 stores at that time. In comparison, Southcenter had 112 stores. Construction had begun in January with completion planned for early spring of 1973. 1972 Daffodil Parade. "Lady of the Lake" was the name of the Olympia Capital Lakefair float in the 1972 Grand Floral Parade. This rosy entry captured second place in the "Communities and cities over 5,000 population" division.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Police units from both the Tacoma Police Department and Pierce County Sheriff were an integral part of the annual Daffodil Parade. Proceeding down wet Pacific Avenue on April 8, 1972, was believed to be a contingent from the Tacoma Police Department. The motorcycle officers were in "V" formation.

View of older buildings on Saint Paul Ave., featuring Sam Thornhill Co., Inc. The Sam Thornhill service station had been located at 1106 Saint Paul Ave. for over 30 years. Besides selling gas, it also sold Miller tires and offered brake and shock service as well as wheel balance. Davies, Pearson, Anderson & Gadbow, Attorneys at Law, had requested photographs of the Saint Paul Ave. and 11th St. area to be photographed on November 21, 1971, to assist in the Jennings vs. Bergsten case. Several of the photographs showed the curving roadway.
