Laying of linoleum at Weston home, DFPA, Mrs. Leik. Joseph and Carol Weston had an addition to their home built by Harry R. May on Interlaaken Dr. in Lakewood. The addition was started in March 1948 and is now nearing completion with the interior finishing. Two men are working together in laying linoleum in the addition, one spreads the adhesive and the other is ready to roll and smooth the linoleum. More rolls of the linoleum stand in the corner. Drywall has been patched and smoothed on the walls. Earlier views of the addition: D32206-7 and D32369-3.

Members from Daughters of the Nile, Tacoma's Egyptian Patrol of the Zora Temple, were getting ready to board a train en route to Phoenix, Arizona. The women would be attending the supreme session of the Daughters of the Nile. They are boarding Northern Pacific Railway's Cascade Limited at Union Depot. Eunice C. Miller is the Captain of the Egyptian Patrol and Lillian M. Shotwell is the current Nile Queen. Names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 5/21/48, p. 1).

Barn yard dance at Woodbrook Hunt Club, Lakewood Orthopedic Club, Mrs. VanWinkle. "Calico Capers" was sponsored by the Lakewood Orthopedic Association on April 24, 1948. Hay and spring flowers decorated the club. "Gals in gingham and lads in jeans" danced to old-time music and more contemporary music. Here we see Thelma and William M. Busch dancing to the music. Bob Hager led the group in square dances. The Lakewood Guild was one of the newer of the 37 guilds associated with the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. Hickey Sales Company had their business offices at 1212 South K Street, they sold punch board and the prizes that were awarded. View of punch board and prizes on display. This ten cent punch board had four winning numbers, ten, five, three and two, number two entitled the winner to a package of cigarettes. The other three numbers won either a "Olympic AC-DC and Battery Radio", "GE Silver Alarm Clock", or "Sessions Navigator Clock".

On July 19, 1948 the Association of Washington Cities through the cooperation of the Bureau Of Government Research of the University of Washington published "Ordinances Licensing Punch Boards in Washington Cities." This publication listed different cities and their laws regarding the use and sales of punch boards. The "Hit & Winner" ten cent punch board had two boards, red and white, the last punch on red board would allow for this person to punch one white. The prizes included: ladies seventeen jewel, bracelet watch, men's seventeen jewel, shock proof watch, men's seventeen jewel, gold plated watch and one hundred cigarettes.

The small market carried a large selection of canned goods on shelving that was wider at the bottom which made it easier to see what was available there. Frozen foods were displayed in a case along the left side wall as well as dairy items in a cold case next to it. A meat counter was housed in the back of the store. Carts for use by customers are seen by the check out stand.

Since this time the department has dramatically increased to help meet the needs of the community. In 1944 the Tacoma Fire Department began an extensive modernization program aimed at upgrading its aging fleet of fire fighting equipment. This picture, taken in June of 1948, shows the fire departments impressive collection of trucks lined up along Tacoma Avenue South in front of Station No. 2. Sperry Flour products were exported throughout the world and shipped throughout the United States, the company was producing over 12,000 barrels of flour per day in order to fill the world's needs.

Construction of signs was one of the "1,000 uses of plywood" being promoted at the annual meeting of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association held in the Winthrop Hotel from June 8-9, 1948. Many signs produced by the Cole & Redmayne Company, the makers of "Vivid Tone" products, were on display. "For Sale" signs, "Carstens" wieners and ham, school zone signs with a little girl and "Susie Q," a policeman and many other plywood cutouts were featured in their sign display area. Treasure Seals ten cent punch board entitled the person who drew seal number twelve to a modern "Porto-Bar Radio," all other seals received a package of cigarettes. The mini bar has an ice bucket, four shot glasses, six cocktail glasses and two decanters, possibly two bottle openers are located on each side. The radio mini bar would allow you to have a party anywhere.

Ace Furnace and Steel Company promised "Products that Endure" for their customers. Ace was owned by Alvin T. Davies, who also owned Tacoma Boiler Works and Birchfield Boiler Company. Carstens Packing Company was the largest independent meat packing company on the West Coast, with plants in Tacoma, Seattle and Spokane. They provided quality assured wieners, beef, bacon, hame, sausage, lamb, pork, veal and many other meat products. View of Pierce County Red Cross Chapter's Incorporation documents, signed on June 20, 1898. This document indicates that the State of Washington and Pierce County are recognizing the Red Cross as an official charitable organization in Tacoma and Pierce County. This is an aerial southeastern view of the downtown Tacoma business district and portion of the industrial Tideflats that was taken in August of 1948. Two boats are approaching the 11th Street Bridge (now Murray Morgan Bridge), left center, as it extends over the City (now Thea Foss) Waterway. The two bridges pictured to the right of the Murray Morgan Bridge have since been removed. Prominent structures also include the 17-story, Art Deco-styled Medical Arts Building (now Tacoma Municipal Building) on Market St., the massive Washington Building and Puget Sound National Bank with its spire, both on Pacific Avenue.

Dickman Lumber Co. August, 1948, aerial view of plant operations at the Dickman Lumber Co., 2423 Ruston Way, with focus on log booms and stacked lumber. Dickman Lumber was established in 1889 by Abraham Coon Young as the Young Bros. Shingle Mill and was later purchased by Leonard Howarth and Ralph L. Dickman, Sr., in 1922, subsequently being renamed the Dickman Lumber Co. The finished products turned out by the mill were not only used locally but shipped to countries around the world. Dickman Lumber's operations on Ruston Way were closed in September, 1977, and the mill was gutted by fire in January, 1979. Its ruins were demolished in 1997.
