Aerial view of St. Regis Paper Co. 's distribution center in Issaquah on August 11, 1966. Piles of plywood are stored both under cover and stacked neatly out in the open. The company's name is prominently displayed on the large plant roof. The new facility distributes building material supplies. Chrysanthemums on display. Harold Evans, Mrs. Ken Ferguson and Wilfred Sargeant admire the chrysanthemums on display on September 29, 1966 at the home of Mrs. Ferguson, 1118 So. 62nd St. The 'mums may have been ready for entry in the Chrysanthemum Growers of Tacoma Show at Visitation Hall the weekend of October 21, 1966. This aerial photograph taken on July 22, 1966 showed the westward view of the So. 19th & Union Ave. neighborhood. The new Elks Temple, 1965 So. Union Ave., with its enormous parking lot was right of Union. It was next to the new Allenmore Medical Center. The open area next to the Elks would eventually become the site of retail and office buildings. Franklin Park was located at the upper center of the photograph, at approximately So. 12th & Puget Sound. The H-shaped apartment complex at 1902 So. Mount Rainier peeks through a blanket of clouds in this July 22, 1966, aerial view of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the city's west end including the Titlow Beach area. Mount Adams is almost totally obscured to Rainier's right. I-5 runs along the photo's horizon. Sixth Avenue leads directly onto the Narrows Bridge. Jackson intersects with Sixth just prior to the long bridge entrance. Tacoma Community College in the 5900 block of So. 12th had just finished its first year of existence; the school, located on a 40-acre plot, is about mid-center in the photograph. American Manufacturing Co., 2119 Pacific Ave., had a motto: "Elevators for every lifting requirement." One of their elevators, a "scissors lift," is pictured above on September 7, 1966. It is being used to transport a variety of boxed goods, including Chiffon facial tissues, Scotties Hankies, large sizes of Wesson oil, and C&H brown and powdered sugar to the new Valu-Mart in Midway. On August 24, 1966, workers at the Sanitary Cloverleaf Farms load crates of milk and other bins into a waiting delivery van with the help of the American Manufacturing Co.'s scissors lift. The lift enabled men to move heavy items without having to physically lift them above their heads. The crates could more easily slide into the delivery van. Seven exuberant Cheney Studs Courteers demonstrated their basketball skills during a session in the Western State Hospital gym on November 5, 1966. The Courteers were a collection of local middle school basketball players sponsored by philanthropist Ben Cheney. They put on fast-paced performances at high school, college and professional half-time shows. This photograph was used by the News Tribune in their March 5, 1967 edition; the Courteers had been invited to perform at the NCAA regional basketball tournament in Corvallis, Oregon, on March 18th. The Courteers were identified as: (foreground) Tim McDonough and Jeff Wilson. In back: Bob Thomsen, Ed Orr, Steve Shamberg, Dennis Franklin and John Yingling. Photograph ordered by Cheney Lumber. Aerial photographs of the So. 19th & Union Ave. looking west toward So. 19th and surrounding north end neighborhoods. The 46-unit apartment complex, Boyd Lundstrom's Unionaire, is H-shaped building with dark roof. It is across the street from the year-old Allenmore Medical Center complex, 1901 So. Union Ave. The medical-dental building with a 50-bed hospital opened in the summer of 1965. The fully airconditioned edifice was built at a cost of approximately $1,300,000. It was conveniently located with direct access to the freeway and Narrows Bridge route. This aerial view of the Northern Pacific Railroad tracks which run along the edge of Commencement Bay just south of Old Tacoma, and adjoining northend neighborhoods, dates from August 1966; before the Schuster Parkway was built. The Sperry Flour grain elevators, located at what is now 3 Schuster Parkway, were located next to the tracks. The General Mills, Sperry Division, had closed in 1965. The plant's grain towers were torn down in 1973 and its deteriorating dock, the last portion of the mill, was demolished in 1989. Work on Schuster Parkway began in 1973 and was completed in 1976. The county park is located in the vicinity of the lake. Veterans Drive is the curving roadway in the center of the photograph. Military Road is believed to be street on right side of photograph.

Glasgow's - Villa Plaza. Glasgow's would open a new store in Lakewood's Villa Plaza Shopping Center in October, 1966. The furniture store would celebrate with an open house starting from October 17th. View of storefront with double wood doors, expansive display windows. It was located between Ernst Hardware and Pay 'n Save. (TNT ad 10-16-66, D-17)

View of Elvins department store side of the Hi-Ho Shopping Center, taken on July 8, 1966. The Hi-Ho Shopping Center on N. Meridian in Puyallup provided a large parking lot for its customers. Once there they could indulge in "one-stop shopping" and pick up groceries, prescriptions, clothing, gardening supplies and flowers, and fill up with gas. Two unidentified employees of the new Highland Maverick Steak House display typical tasty meals of steak, baked potato and roll served at the restaurant in August of 1966. The Highland Maverick, located at 6104 Sixth Avenue, celebrated its grand opening that month. The restaurant advertised the above meal for a mere $1.29 with kids eating at half-price. Crawford Burns was the owner/operator of the Highland Maverick, located across the street from the new Highland Hill Shopping Center. (TNT ad 8-27-66, p. 7)

Seven men were present at the signing of an agreement at the Northwestern Drug Co. with National Cash Register on August 23, 1966. A large folder states that F.C. Osmers, was president of Northwestern Drug Co.; Mr. Osmers is holding a small sign indicating that "Northwestern's partner presents NCR total system." Photograph ordered by National Cash Register.

Seattle-First National Bank opened a branch in Puyallup in 1966. The contemporary brick building was located at 205 S.W. Meeker (now 2nd Ave. S.W.). Customers could either utilize the drive-up window located under the overhanging roof or park in the bank lot to visit in person. A towering sign informed residents that Sea-First, established in 1870, was now open for business. Photograph ordered by Seattle-First National Bank, Seattle.

Elegant North end home, close to Stadium High School, restored to reflect its Victorian-era origins. Built in 1890 and known to many as the residence of David Dowd, the large home has an expansive porch, steeply pitched roof, and decorative shingles. The home is now the property of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hood, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia. The Hoods have filled their new home with many antiques including a Tiffany glass lamp, Hepplewhite furniture and a French hand-tooled prayer chair. Studio set-up of model crane taken on September 6, 1966. This is a model of a U.S. Navy 47 1/2-ton missile and boat crane manufactured by Star Iron & Steel of Tacoma. The company built many heavy duty cranes for the government during WWII and continued after the war to manufacture cranes and other equipment for government and private industry. Grand opening of the Villa Plaza Pay 'n Save drugstore. It was opened seven days a week, including Sunday hours. Gordon Poyner, who had formerly operated the Everett store, was the store's manager. The 26th Pay 'n Save opened on September 27, 1966. The drugstore chain had grown from a single Seattle store in 1947 to an international firm by the mid-60s. The 18,000 square foot store located in the Villa Plaza Shopping Center would carry a full line of prescription drugs plus over 40,000 items of merchandise including cosmetics, camera equipment and sporting goods. A new Wigwam department store opened in Puyallup at 515 So. Meridian on August 18, 1966. Going over final details before the store's grand opening were Gordon L. McLeod, district manager, and C.J. Phillips, general manager of the 18 Washington Wigwam stores. The store's distinctive neon signage is on top of the $185,000 pre-cast concrete structure. Wigwam was expanding in the Puget Sound area. It had opened its first store in Tacoma the previous year at 92nd and Pacific. The Puyallup store located in the Wigwam-Safeway shopping center between South 5th and 6th on Meridian was the fourth Wigwam store in the Tacoma-area. Norman Crofford, a recent transfer from the Phoenix Wigwam, would manage the store's 15 full-time employees. (TNT 8-17-66, A-6) TPL-9440

ca. 1966. Advertising for Weyerhaeuser. Map shows the various Weyerhaeuser Co. locations nationwide with live figures standing near the designated cities. Although Weyerhaeuser continued to be headquartered in Tacoma in 1966, it had planned to move its home office to the Federal Way area. Map seems to imply that the company was not just centered in Washington state but was expanding nationwide. Photograph ordered by Bozell & Jacobs, Inc.

This dining and dance portion of a ski lodge is believed to be part of the Jay Peak ski resort in northern Vermont. Skiers could enjoy a different form of exercise - dance - and dine in comfort between ski runs.

ca. 1966. Copy of color renderings ordered by Weyerhaeuser Properties on August 17, 1966. This is believed to be the observation deck of the Jay Peak ski resort located in northern Vermont. Jay Peak is still operating nearly 40 years after a copy of this drawing was commissioned. It claims to have more natural snowfall than in most parts of New England and draws skiers from that region as well as nearby Canada.

500 tons of St. Regis semi-bleached pulp are being loaded onto the SS Alemannia for passage to Bremen, Germany, on December 6, 1966. The ship is docked at the Port of Tacoma.
