Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

On December 3rd, 1938, The Golden Jubilee was brought to a close with a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, where 600 Shriners from 12 temples gathered to commemorate the founding of Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Honored were the "Old Timers," those who were members before 1900 and helped to grow the membership from 8 to the current 2,000. Pictured are, seated left to right, William McIntyre, Charles Schutzman, S.A. Perkins, Ira S. Davisson, Dr. A.J. Gustaveson, W. R. Nichols and C.P. Kimball. Standing, left to right, are Fred W. Photographs taken for Samuel L. Crippen's election campaign. Man sitting at a piano with a sign on the piano reading "Feed the Kitty." Pioneer Beer advertisement sign on wall behind him. Crippen was running a hotly contested campaign against incumbent County Prosecutor Harry H. Johnston. Johnston claimed that he had taken on organized crime in Tacoma, driving out gambling, closing taverns on Sunday and making Tacoma safer for the average Joe. Slot machines in Tacoma tavern; photograph taken for Samuel L. Crippen's election campaign. Cash register with large, unusual objects displayed behind bar. "Lady Luck" punch board on counter with tray of glasses and liquor bottles beside it. In 1938, Samuel Crippen was running a no holds barred campaign against incumbent Harry H. Johnston as County Attorney. The aggressive young Tacoma lawyer was hotly disputing Johnston's claim that he has driven out slot machines and gambling from Tacoma. (T. C.M.T.C. awards ceremonies. Governor Clarence D. Martin with a group of Army officers observe the Citizens Military Training Camp awards program at Fort Lewis. Awards for civil, military and athletic excellence were presented at the conclusion of the annual encampment of citizen soldiers. The awards were presented on Visitors Day and the ceremony observed by Gov. Martin, mayors of nearby cities and families and friends of participants. (T.Times, 8/4/1938, p.1).

Mrs. Kate Stevens Bates, youngest daughter and only survivor of Washington Territory's first governor, Isaac Stevens, sits at the piano at her home in Olympia on March 14, 1939. She was only a few months old when the family arrived in Olympia. Brother Hazard Stevens built Bates' home. She is the wife of James H.S. Bates. (T. Times 3/14/1939, p. 1)

Dancer Martha Graham from photographer Turner Richards' 1938 stock file. The famous dancer appeared at Jason Lee Auditorium at the invitation of the Tacoma Junior League on April 1, 1937. She and her modern dance troupe of 12 were met with enthusiasm by local residents. Proceeds from Miss Graham's appearance went to the Junior League's Well Baby Clinic project at the county hospital. Junia Todd Hallen sitting at small writing desk on February 14, 1939, preparing a speech for the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority entitled "Broadway (Tacoma) Looks at Broadway (New York.)" Over 300 women attended the "tea talk" which included a review of current and recent New York plays, as well as a discussion of the founding of the new producing group, the Playwrights' Production Co. Mrs. Hallen was the daughter of former College of Puget Sound president Edward H. Todd. After a career that included social work, school teaching, book reviewing and lecturing, she passed away at age 60 in October of 1956. Among the most cherished possessions of Eliza Ferry Leary was the Bible used to administer the oath of office to her father, Elisha P. Ferry, the first governor of Washington State. After Mrs. Leary died, the Bible was deposited with the Washington State Historical Society. W.P. Bonney sits at Governor Ferry's desk flanked by Ruth and Harold Wheeler. The Wheelers were students in the History department at the College of Puget Sound. The chair in which Mr. Bonney is seated was made in 1854 for Isaac I. On May 13, 1937, this photograph of the junior girls' drill team of the Ancient Order of United Workmen appeared in the Tacoma Times. This group was the only junior drill team of its kind in the state of Washington and they were preparing to perform at the state convention to be held in Tacoma the following week. The group in the back holds signs: "Patriotism, Obedience, Honesty." Girls in the front are, left to right, Aimee Fuhrmeister, Ethel Gunnett, Virginia Sharman, Jean Scalara, Phyllis Nelson, Eva Harrison, Juanita Retke, Lois Langdon, Jean Marie Baker, Francine Funk, Clara Panico, Edna Ruth Harper and Jean Mergel. In the back are Maxine Walsh, James Melton, Bill Funk, Capt. Charles Funk, Loren Cowling and Billy Cook. The students of Franklin Elementary School at 3202 So. 12th Street presented a pageant titled "The Coming of Spring" on Wednesday, April 21, 1937. The performance recreated spring celebrations from several countries as well as the United States. Patricia Litstrom, at the center, was Queen of the festival. Pictured on the left, front to back, are David Woodard, Eugene Clough, Helen Hansen, Margaret Macemon and Gloria Mardesick. On the right, front to back, are Martin Sangster, June Nyquist, Gloria Raymond, Betty Weber and Marie Nelson. Franklin School was demolished in 1997 and a new building was constructed. (T. ca. 1937. Works Progress Administration motion picture projectionist at the Tacoma Armory, circa 1937. Man looking at reel of film, sign reading "USA Work Program WPA", many children in background. The poster is a typical graphic from the WPA. The WPA was created in May of 1935. The letters originally stood for Works Progress Administration, which later became the Works Projects Administration. The New Deal program provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression. It was shut down in later 1943, as defense industries eliminated unemployment during World War II. (T. ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Their uniforms are short, shiny dresses in blue and gold with matching Cossack boots and pillbox style hats. (T.Times 10/15/1937, pg. 8) (WSHS)

In March of 1937, the Tacoma Times newspaper held a special party for their carriers at the World's Fair Museum, a travelling exhibit that was in Tacoma for two weeks from March 19 to April 5. The traveling attraction, which was housed in the building at 1155-57 Broadway, featured Capt. Paul Herold - the German Giant, Princess Wee Jean - the smallest mother in the world, the "Albino Twins," and Laurello- the man with the revolving head. The "museum" was featured at the "Century of Progress" in Chicago, the San Diego World's Fair, and the Texas Centennial. Many of the performers in the museum had been illustrated in cartoons by Robert L. Ripley. (T. Times)
