ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. View of ivy-covered Jones Hall showing exterior and main entrance, the first building constructed on the college's North 15th and Warner site. The campus was opened in September, 1924. Ground breaking ceremonies at C.P.S. for new Student Union Building. A group of coeds with shovels take their turn during Homecoming Week in October, 1940. The Student Union Building was the first of three building projects totaling $300,000 which had been recently approved by the Board of Trustees. The school's population was growing and new structures needed to be built to accommodate the students.

Informal shoveling contest during October, 1940, ground breaking at C.P.S.for new Student Union Building. Mayor Harry Cain, in hat and cigarette in mouth, squats at right center. Norton Clapp is to Cain's left in photo. Norton Clapp served as a trustee of the college (later University) for 62 years, 19 of those as chairman of the board of trustees. Students and invited guests chortle at the sight of the unannounced shoveling contest pitting Bishop Bruce Baxter of Willamette University, C.P.S. president Edward H. Todd, Board of Trustees president E.L. Blaine and trustee Albert H. Hooker, Jr., on October 16, 1940. The contest was diplomatically declared a draw. Trustee Hooker was disqualified because his first shovelful of dirt fell on Dr. Todd's neck. Norton Clapp would go on to win the actual 4-man shoveling contest, besting Mayor Cain, the student body president and Chamber of Commerce president. On September 30, 1941, before moving into the College of Puget Sound's new Student Union building, representatives of the campus sororities meet to draw lots for room assignments. Numbers were drawn from a box held by Barbara Tomlinson, the pictured small daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Tomlinson. The second Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament was sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission and was held at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. Winners of the various titles received sports jackets with the T.A.C. Golden Gloves emblem and the runners-up were awarded gold miniature boxing gloves. The "Golden Boy" was awarded a wrist watch. The Second Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament, sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission, was held January 26th and 27th, 1950 at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. Several thousand boxing fans were treated to an action-laden program of bouts. The winner in each division received a sports jacket emblazoned with the T.A.C. Golden Gloves emblem. Washington Gas and Electric Co.'s booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show featuring natural gas appliances. The exhibit includes Servel "silent" gas refrigerators, Wedgewood gas ranges and Hamilton clothes dryers. Easy chairs are provided for foot sore exhibit goers. Washington Gas and Electric Co. was located at 101 So. 10th in Tacoma.

Booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show by Rossoe Manufacturing, makers of the Rossoe pressure burner floor furnace. The Rossoe model was a diesel oil burning furnance, advertised as "economatic", offering low cost heating. Cut aways show the inner workings of the furnace, important for the more technically advanced home owners.

Booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show for Zingler Electric Co., 1112 Pacific Ave. The Home Show took place March 21-26, 1950 at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. This shot shows the latest in electric appliances- cabinet style sewing machines, an automatic wringer washer, new ranges and Frigidaire refrigerators. The electric sewing machine retailed for $89.95 at Zingler, $9 down and $5 per month.

Tacoma Master Builders Association exhibit booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show.The TMB was an organization for contractors that ensured quality by its logo "Master-built." The 6 day and 5 night 1950 Home Show was sponsored by the Master Builders and Associates and had over 100 exhibitors- roughly double the size of the 1949 show. Admission cost was 55 cents for adults, 25 cents for children and included admission to the $20,000 "Home of Ideas", at No. 11th and Jackson, that was constructed for this event and given away as a prize. Exhibits covered all aspects of home construction, remodeling, decorating, and landscaping. Special entertainment events were also scheduled throughout the show. The 1950 Home Show was a rousing success attended by over 21,000.

Commercial gardening exhibit booth sponsored by Tacoma Seed Company, 805 Pacific Ave., at the spring flower show at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse March 31- April 2, 1950. Organized by the women of the area's garden clubs, the spring flower show was part of the Daffodil Festival celebrations. The booth displayed yard machinery, Zehrung garden chemicals and Fletcher-Bilt all cedar greenhouses. In the foreground of the picture is a profusion of spring flowers supplied by the garden clubs and professional growers as decoration. C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.
