Adelphian Choir. Resplendent in gowns of turquoise and elegant tuxedos, the 42-voice Adelphian Choir from the University of Puget Sound posed for a group portrait in the school's music building on January 12, 1970. They were led by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, director of the School of Music. The acclaimed choir was formed in 1932 and have performed locally and toured nationally. Cheerleading camp. About 90 cheerleaders gathered at the University of Puget Sound in mid-July of 1969 for several days of cheerleading camp. Wearing their respective school cheer outfits, the junior high and high school pepsters hailing from Washington and Idaho posed in front of the university's music building. On January 5, 1951, three unidentified Tacoma Athletic Commission members posed with tennis stars (in white, left to right) Pancho Segura, Pauline Betz Addie, Gertrude "Gussie" Moran and Jack Kramer at the Bobby Riggs Professional Tennis Show held in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. TAC and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club cosponsored the two singles and the doubles match offered in the nationally touring show. The most exciting matches were those of Kramer, who was top of the amateur field, and Segura, the flashy Latin player from Ecuador with the two handed forehand and backhand returns. "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, consistently rated in the top 10 of this country, was better known for her fashion statements such as her ruffled tennis undies. Addie, who had worn the national women's crown for four years, was also known as a sharp dresser and the two women consistently tried to out dress each other. A portion of the evenings returns were donated to the March of Dimes. (TNT 1/5/1951, pg. 15)

This beautifully decorated table at Jones Hall greeted the attendees of a preview showing on February 6, 1951 of Northwest artists on exhibit at the College of Puget Sound. The Tacoma Art League sponsored the exhibition. On the table were ti leaves, candelabras in black marble stands, brass coffee urn and assorted delicacies. From left in the photograph are: painter Mrs. Helen Everett, program chairman of the Tacoma Art League Mrs. Warren Tomlinson, Helen Feek, Tom Jensen and Maxine Parker. There would be 163 candidates for degrees at C.P.S.'s 67th Commencement held on June 5, 1955. Governor Langlie's topic would be "Putting Meaning into Life." A model home was built outside the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse to be displayed during the 1952 Home Show. A capacity crowd attended Jack Lacy's Sales Clinic at the College of Puget Sound that was presented by the Tacoma Sales Executive Club over three evenings. All shows were sold out days ahead of the lectures. William S. Crean, vice president of Lacey Sales Institute, flew from San Francisco for a three-city itinerary which included Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, and Tacoma. (TNT, 2/2/1952, p.19)

Pfaff sewing machine booth at the 1952 Home Show, operated by McClanahan's Blue Ribbon Appliance Center at 8404 So. Tacoma Way (Mrs. Mildred McClanahan pictured) and the Pfaff Sewing Machine Center at 781 Broadway. The fourth annual Home Show was held from April 3-6, 1952 and had 20,000 square feet of commercial exhibits designed to entice homeowners improve their standard of living and to spruce up their homes.

Booth at 1952 Home Show sponsored by South Tacoma Heating Co., at 5625 So. Montgomery, and Rossoe Manufacturing Co. Cardboard cuties in corsets stand among the furnaces to advertise that it's "time to modernize with Honeywell clock thermostats." The fourth annual Home Show, sponsored by the Tacoma Master Builders, drew crowds of approximately 13, 480 over its four day run. The Show had commercial exhibits, a furnished model home on site and working demonstrations of household skills.

Gaily fronted by a white pickett fence, this booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show looks comfy and homey as befits its sponsor Lindstrom's Home Furnishings, "your friendly country store." The display has a dining room set for $229.95, an easy chair for $129.95 and a love seat for $159.95. Also exhibited are carpet samples and boldly patterned drapes. Lindstrom's was located at 8021 Portland Ave.

Paul Bunyan meets Mr. Timeplan at National Bank of Washington's booth at the 1951 home show at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. A poster on the counter at the right offers a chance to win a $50 savings account. It will go to the person who guesses the total resources of the National Bank of Washington as of May 7, 1951. Rose Marie and Bruce are surrounded by members of their families. Rose Marie was the daughter of Kenneth and Rosa Murphy. New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks. Declining business conditions in 1938 would make it hard for some graduates to find steady employment immediately on graduation. A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

College of Puget Sound's Campus Playcrafters performed Thorton Wilder's "Skin of Our Teeth" as their spring production. The play depicts man's survival through the ice age, deluge and war.
