First meal in new womens' residence hall, College of Puget Sound. Nine of 40 women to live in new quarters gather at table with Carolyn Schneider, housemother, and Dr. and Mrs. Edward Todd, college president. The new hall, named Anderson Hall, was built for $75,000. It would be formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. Names of students are listed in the Tacoma Times article dated February 2, 1939. (T. College of Puget Sound 1938 graduation exercises. Students and families are seated in the auditorium during graduation ceremonies at Jones Hall. The college would be giving 87 degrees at its 50th graduation exercise. The college had stated earlier that pressing business conditions would make it hard for 1938 graduates to find steady employment. Those going into teaching would have the easiest time finding positions; chemistry majors would have the hardest. Declining business conditions in 1938 would make it hard for some graduates to find steady employment immediately on graduation. Govenor Clarence D. Martin shakes hands with President Edward H. Todd of the College of Puget Sound during the school's 50th annual convocation. Sponsored by Judge O.G. Ellis, Governor Martin received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Douglas Stanley of New York and Professor Trevor Kincaid of the University of Washington also were awarded honorary degrees. On January 5, 1951, three unidentified Tacoma Athletic Commission members posed with tennis stars (in white, left to right) Pancho Segura, Pauline Betz Addie, Gertrude "Gussie" Moran and Jack Kramer at the Bobby Riggs Professional Tennis Show held in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. TAC and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club cosponsored the two singles and the doubles match offered in the nationally touring show. The most exciting matches were those of Kramer, who was top of the amateur field, and Segura, the flashy Latin player from Ecuador with the two handed forehand and backhand returns. "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, consistently rated in the top 10 of this country, was better known for her fashion statements such as her ruffled tennis undies. Addie, who had worn the national women's crown for four years, was also known as a sharp dresser and the two women consistently tried to out dress each other. A portion of the evenings returns were donated to the March of Dimes. (TNT 1/5/1951, pg. 15)

The fourteen student members of the College of Puget Sound Choral Readers perform in recital in Jones Hall Auditorium. The group, under the direction of Martha Pearl Jones, performed a diversified program of ensemble verse readings. Members were Herb Stark, leader, Gloria Nelson, assistant leader, Doug Cullen, Ellen Davenport, Mary Kincheloe, Helen Pearson, Kaye Klopfenstein, Mel Gidley, William Gianelli, Dale Lee, David Stell, Fern McCullough, Claudia Zediker and Homer Johnson. On February 12, 1949, the art honorary fraternity of the College of Puget Sound, Alpha Rho Tau, threw their very first Beaux Arts Ball. The party was given in honor of the College's foreign students and drew students dressed in all sorts of lavish, exotic and creative costumes. A masked couple glided by in fanciful dress; she a column of black and white ruffles and he a rectangular knight. Other couples looked on from tables near a wall decorated with modern drawings. All of the revelers were unidentified with the exception of the woman directly left of the female dancer. She was Maxine Lister, the winner of the first prize for most original costume. It was hosted by the art honorary fraternity, Alpha Rho Tau (Greek letters for ART), in honor of the college's foreign students. In 1948 College of Puget Sound had the Memorial Fieldhouse built, this building was dedicated in 1949 to those CPS students who died while serving in World War II. In 1949 the President's Residence would be constructed; Dugan, Mock and Morrison were the architects. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. CPS. Marcello Mochi, center, was the Italian vice consul stationed in Seattle. He came to Tacoma to meet with the World Affairs Council October 5, 1948, at the College of Puget Sound. He told about the Italian struggle and some of the war-torn areas where he served during the Ethopian conflict and World War II. Shown with Mr. Mochi are Ray W.
