Governor Arthur B. Langlie, second from left, at College of Puget Sound graduation ceremonies to deliver the Commencement Address. President R. Franklin Thompson, in cap and gown, is next to the governor. The couple on right is likely Mr. and Mrs. Dix Rowland. There would be 163 candidates for degrees at C.P.S.'s 67th Commencement held on June 5, 1955. Governor Langlie's topic would be "Putting Meaning into Life." Adelphian Choir. Resplendent in gowns of turquoise and elegant tuxedos, the 42-voice Adelphian Choir from the University of Puget Sound posed for a group portrait in the school's music building on January 12, 1970. They were led by Dr. Bruce Rodgers, director of the School of Music. The acclaimed choir was formed in 1932 and have performed locally and toured nationally. New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks. Cheerleading camp. About 90 cheerleaders gathered at the University of Puget Sound in mid-July of 1969 for several days of cheerleading camp. Wearing their respective school cheer outfits, the junior high and high school pepsters hailing from Washington and Idaho posed in front of the university's music building. College of Puget Sound graduation exercises. Three students read "The Courier" newspaper while waiting for graduation ceremonies to begin. Declining business conditions in 1938 would make it hard for some graduates to find steady employment immediately on graduation. C.P.S. students Gretchen Kunigk (later Fraser) and Herb Clark pose in front of football players at the College of Puget Sound in a September 10, 1938, fall fashion shoot for Klopfenstein's. The men were practicing at the first fall turnout for football . In 1948 Gretchen Fraser would become the first American to medal in Olympic Skiing.

ca. 1927. College of Puget Sound's Spurs, circa 1927, " Woman's National Pep Organization, Puget Sound Chapter." Eleven girls in sweaters with a spur logo and knee length skirts plus their sponsor pose on the steps of a campus building. Spurs, a non profit service club, had been on the campus since 1925. A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

This photograph from November of 1948 shows James Anderson, a College of Puget Sound (UPS) student from Enumclaw, inspecting a splice he has just made in a 16 mm film. The college had just started a new visual education program to provide 16 mm films and slides for classroom presentations. They also had an opaque projector that could be used to project maps and pages from books or magazines. In the first two months of the program over 136,000 feet of film were shown on campus. Mrs. Carolyn Schneider was the head of the Tacoma Art League who had galleries in Jones Hall at the College of Puget Sound. She was also the housemother for Anderson Hall, a women's dormitory on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. She stands by a bookcase with a drawing of a goat above it. Several interiors at CPS, Murtough Supply, Frank Murtough. Murtough Supply Company, owned by Frank J. Murtough, handled cleaning supplies and equipment and were distributors of Franklin's R.G. Products, Clarke & Finnell Floor Machines and Multi-Clean Vacuums. They were located at 706 Pacific Avenue. This interior view features an open hallway with seating, an elaborately carved side table, a portrait of a man wearing academic robes, and a grandfather clock. Draperies are closed over the windows. Banisters for the stairways are also shown.
