ca. 1939. Elevated view of the Hotel Winthrop, circa 1939. By this time, the Winthrop had been open for 14 years, celebrating its grand opening on May 16, 1925. The eleven story hotel was named after explorer and writer Theodore Winthrop whose book "The Canoe and the Saddle" helped popularize the Northwest.

The National Checker Association holds its second annual title tournament at the Winthrop Hotel, with play beginning on August 29, 1939. A group of 13 women and three men pose at the hotel with checker boards in front of the group. There would be an overall competition, followed by a separate womens' contest. On July 5, 1939, some Gyro Club members pose on the roof of the Winthrop Hotel modeling their diverse styles of Jubilee Hats. They are promoting the wearing of humorous hats to boost the Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23. The hats will be available in all colors, shapes and sizes in styles popular 50 years ago to add a little levity to the celebration. The prominent Pierce County residents are, left to right, Tacoma Chamber of Commerce manager T. A. Stevenson, County Commissioner John Schlarb, County Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Louise S. Taylor, Sheriff John Bjorklund and County Commissioner A.A. Rankin.

Frankland and Dr. and Mrs. James Gourley practice a step or two before leaving the lounge for the dance floor on April 22, 1939. On November 28, 1939, Gilbert Waite, left, president of the Young Mens Business Club, presented a wire haired terrier puppy to Mrs. Frances M. Haskell at the Hotel Winthrop as Governor Clarence D. Martin looked on. The special banquet at the Winthrop was being given in honor of Mrs. Haskell, national president of the Ladies G.A.R., who would soon be leaving on a 48 state speaking tour. The YMBC had several years previously adopted Mrs. Haskell as a sort of "foster mother" and when she lost her little terrier, they decided to do something about it. At the banquet, Waite presented her with a bouquet of flowers and from the center popped the head of the little pup. ALBUM 10. (T. Times 11/29/1939, pg. 10)

They were there to attend the annual dinner and hobby show of the club which was held in the hotel's Crystal Ballroom on April 12, 1940. An International-style Reserve Officers Military Ball was held on February 18, 1939, at the Crystal Ballroom in the Hotel Winthrop with over 500 people in attendance. Members of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from Vancouver, British Columbia, performed a highlander's dance for officers from Washington State. Lou Henry (Mrs. Herbert) Hoover, Honorary National President of the Girl Scouts and former first lady, presents the "Golden Eaglet," the highest award in scouting, to Dorothy Bachelor on February 16, 1936. Helen Cannon, guard of honor, and Dorothy Hitchcock watch over the ceremony which was held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Hotel Winthrop. Monarch Club banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, Presidential Suite. The Presidential Suite was the most elaborate of the 24 "parlor" suites in the Winthrop. The living room was finished in Philippine Mahogany with paneled plastered walls and special lighting fixtures. (WSHS)

On June 5, 1937, as a function of the Shrine spring reunion in Tacoma, the Afifi Temple held a Ball and banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. Shriners and their wives were the guests. Here the photographer was setting up camera to take photographs of people in the receiving line.

On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners gathered in Tacoma for a spring reunion. They kicked off the get together with a parade. A long line of Shriners waited behind their drill leader for the parade to begin. Winthrop Hotel and Roxy theater on Broadway are in background.

In 1926, silent films still ruled the screens and Tacoma had over 25 moving picture theaters. It also had its own theater association, the Picture Theater Managers' Association of Tacoma. In February of that year the group posed for a picture after one of their meetings at the Hotel Winthrop. Pictured seated (left to right) are: James Hone, L.A. When the hotel opened in May, 1925, the main dining room and lobby/lounge were seamlessly blended into a space 40 feet wide and 120 feet long. The hotel was managed by D.M. Linnard, Inc. and recognized for its quality of accommodations and service. (filed with Argentum)

Genevieve Brophy (left) and Anna Fuchs, employees of the main central office of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co., sit at the new Hotel Winthrop switchboard surrounded by 300 desk telephones. After the telephones and switchboard were installed, the Hotel Winthrop became the first Tacoma hotel to have a telephone in every room. The switchboard was located on the roof garden floor of the hotel in a private room set apart from public view. It was staffed by four young women and chief operator Mrs. Johanna Hicks, who maintained the hotel's service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (TNT 5/16/1925, pg 3) negative A1001-0, TPL-9971

Kenworthy banquet for employees. Thomas W. Neilson, 35-year employee of Kenworthy Grain & Milling Co., was the honored guest at an informal banquet for company employees held in the Army-Navy Room of the Winthrop Hotel on May 23, 1936. Mr. Neilson, warehouse foreman, had plans to retire. Others in attendance included the branch managers throughout the state that represented the 43-year-old Tacoma business. ca. 1925. Five men with floor sanders prepare the floor of the main lobby of the Winthrop Hotel prior to its Grand Opening May 16, 1925. The five men walk in a line, sanding down the new floors in the building. The Winthrop was designed by W.L. Stoddard with Roland Borhek serving as associate architect. The Citizens Hotel Corp. was founded in April of 1922 to come up with a plan for a grand hotel for the growing city of Tacoma. It was named for explorer and writer Theodore Winthrop. Five hundred local residents capped off an exciting day of Hollywood stars, promotional events, and the premiere of "Tugboat Annie Sails Again" with a celebratory dinner held at the Winthrop.
