Times in conjunction with the investigation into the kidnapping of George Hunt Weyerhaeuser. On May 24, 1935, George was kidnapped near noon from the grounds of Annie Wright. He had left his school, Lowell Elementary, and walked to meet his sister Ann at the seminary intending to ride home with her for lunch. The Weyerhaeusers were informed at around 3 p.m. that their son was missing. A ransom note, demanding $200,000 arrived around 6:30pm. that evening. (T. In June of 1935, some of Annie Wright Seminary's earliest alumnae returned to the campus to help celebrate the school's 50th anniversary. The girls school opened in September of 1884 at 611 Division Ave. and these ladies were some of the first students. As a part of the anniversary celebration, they took part in a seminary pageant, modeling outfits from that opening year. Pictured seated are, left to right, Mrs. W.H. Annie Wright Seminary.The interior of Raynor Chapel with the girls choir singing is the location of the memorial service for Founder's Day, marking the 60th year since Annie Wright Seminary was opened by the Right Reverend John A. Paddock. An open house will be held after lunch. Annie Wright Seminary was named after the daughter of Charles B. Wright who had extensive business interests in Tacoma and the Northwest. Twenty seven students were graduating from Annie Wright Seminary, and eighteen members of Class VIII were graduating to the High School Division in June of 1948. Commencement exercises were being held in Keator Hall and Raynor Chapel. Rt. Reverend Lane W, Barton, Bishop of Eastern Oregon, would deliver the commencement address, and Rt. Reverend Steven F. Panhellenic Tea at Great Hall, Annie Wright, News Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Tacoma Panhellenic honored graduating senior high school girls and their mothers at their annual tea on April 24, 1948, at the Great Hall at Annie Wright. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. The Clover Park choir sang. This view shows four women wearing corsages in front of one of the fireplaces in the Great Hall. (T.Times, 4/22/1948, p.10)

This aerial photograph of part of the northwest section of the Stadium District was taken in August of 1948. The large Tudor Gothic design building at the bottom is Annie Wright Seminary, 827 Tacoma Avenue North, which opened at this address in 1924. Immediately above Annie Wright are the courts and clubhouse of the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club, 502 Borough Road. The large area of trees to the left is the "top" end of Garfield Park. TPL-9494

The Right Reverend Stephen Fielding Bayne, Jr. in Raynor Chapel at Annie Wright Seminary. Photo taken for The Shield, Annie Wright Seminary's yearbook, 1950 issue. In 1959, in a surprise move, Rt. Rev. Bayne was elected to head the world wide, 40 million member Anglican Communion with headquarters in London. In a new position created for him, he would coordinate activities of 15 different autonomous churches, including the Episcopal Church of the United States. He would operate as spokesman and leader of the world organization, in hopes of unifying all of its diverse factions. Rt. Rev. Bayne had headed the diocese of Western Washington in Olympia for 12 years. At 52 years of age, Rt. Rev. Bayne had also previously served as a reporter on the Wall Street Journal, as a Navy chaplain and as the Chairman of the Department of Religion at Columbia University. A native of New York City, he was educated at Amherst, ordained in 1932 and consecrated as the Bishop of Olympia in 1947. He was well known as a speaker, famous for his wit and sense of humor.
