Dancer Martha Graham from photographer Turner Richards' 1938 stock file. The famous dancer appeared at Jason Lee Auditorium at the invitation of the Tacoma Junior League on April 1, 1937. She and her modern dance troupe of 12 were met with enthusiasm by local residents. Proceeds from Miss Graham's appearance went to the Junior League's Well Baby Clinic project at the county hospital. Attending the performance of Ted Shawn and his dancers at Jason Lee auditorium are Lillian (Mrs. Robert M.) Jackson, Shannon Smith and Alta (Mrs. George H.) Raleigh. Ted Shawn (1891-1972) was one of the early pioneers in 20th Century modern dance. Early in his dance career, 1914, he married Ruth St. Dennis and together they founded the Denishawn Co. They performed and worked together until they separated in 1930. From 1933-1940, Shawn performed and travelled with his own male company of dancers, forever changing the appearance of masculine dance. (T. Times, 4/15/1939, p. 7).

Two unidentified girls are making an elaborate decoration of fabric and paper for the Jason Lee's annual music festival. Jason Lee Junior High school (now Middle School) presented its annual musical festival on May 14, 1940. It was entitled "Say It With Music" and involved several hundred students. Boys and girls glee clubs, band, orchestra, and students from general music classes participated. The event included "Gypsy," Spanish and Mexican scenes. (T. Times 5-10-40, p. 20-article only)

Over one hundred dancers and musicians performed on May 14, 1940 at Jason Lee Junior High in the schools spring music festival. A series of Gypsy, Spanish and Mexican musical scenes were combined by Miss Kathryn Bruner, the Jason Lee music instructor, into a program titled "Say It with Music". There is unfortunately no record of the names of these barefooted dancers.(T. Times, 5/14/1940, p. 5)

Tacoma's business leaders held a "Defense Rally for Business Men" at Jason Lee Junior High on March 31, 1942, to boost War Bond sales. $170,000 was pledged. Mayor Harry P. Cain is pictured reading to an attentive group which included: E.H. Forbes, C.A. Erdahl, Mayor Harry P. Cain, John Jewett, F.T. Treichel, Jack Shapiro, W.G. Pinches, Al Copp, C.G. Standing in front of a portrait of General Douglas MacArthur and behind a giant "V" for victory, Lois Mae Smith sang at the war bond rally held on March 31, 1942. She was flanked by Bruce Stewart, a boy scout from Jason Lee Junior H.S. and Kenny Strom, a sea scout. At the "Defense Rally for Business Men," Tacoma's business leaders pledged to sell bonds amounting to 2% of their previous year's gross sales. Over $170,000 in pledges were turned in at the rally, and the drive expected to reach a total of over $300,000. TPL-1971 (T. Times 4/1/1942, pg. 1)

Junior high school students worked four hour shifts as part of World War II all-school-at-war activities to raise money to buy war bonds and stamps. Students at Jason Lee High School purchased a Jeep with funds raised. Two soldiers flank a smiling group of teenagers who have crammed together atop the Jeep with a sign noting their accomplishment, "Whoopee". (T.Times, 4/19/1943, p.14.) TPL-8328

Honolulu Conservatory of Music's 1951 recital, "Aloha Land", was their annual revue by pupils, presented at Jason Lee's auditorium. The entire student body of the conservatory was arranged in 11 orchestral groups. Variety acts augmented the ensemble numbers. Floyd and Karol Piper were directors of the revue, assisted by Donna Walters, Herb Erickson, Juanita Johnson and Carol Johnson. Howard Schroeder was master of ceremonies. The United Good Neighbors, a predecessor of United Way, started their annual fund drive on September 27, 1955, with a goal of $848,960. The UGN supported 27 health, recreation and welfare agencies including St. Ann's Home, Tacoma Day Nursery and Camp Fire Girls. 500 Pierce County businesses had UGN chapter chairmen who solicited funds from over 30,000 employees. In this November 8, 1955, photograph, the 1955 UGN Donald Franklin Memorial Award is shared between two individuals, thought to be Mrs. Don Franklin and George W. Watts; Watts is an employee of Pacific Telephone & Telegraph. Franklin was the long-time district manager of the telephone company. Sepia photograph ordered by Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. Twelve members of the Y.W. C.A. cabinet posed on the porch steps of the College of Puget Sound's main building on November 10, 1922. At that time, C.P.S. was located at 602 North Sprague Avenue (now the site of Jason Lee Middle School). The annual Y.W.C.A. advisory board tea was held on November 23, 1922, to honor C.P.S. girls. Mr. Eiselen conducted a Bible seminar at the College of Puget Sound's Religious Education summer school in 1922. The students, mostly male, posed on the steps of the school, then located at 602 No. Sprague Ave. (now the site of Jason Lee Middle School) . The man in the top row, far left next to the column, has been identified as Tom Swayze who would become Tacoma's City Controller and later state Director of Licenses. TPL-6688; G67.1-020

On stage in the Jason Lee Auditorium on November 9, 1973, was the large choir composed of "Sweet Adelines," the women's barbershop-style musical organization. They were participating in the group's annual musical show, this year called "Puttin' on the Style, " a look back at the great musical eras of the 1800's. Also performing that evening were the award-winning "Most Happy Fellows" male barbershop quartet, Commencement Bay Flounders & Seafood Conspiracy, Capital Chords and the Escapades. Jason Lee School 9A class. The ninth grade class poses in the school gymnasium under a basketball hoop with a torn net. Jason Lee opened in 1924, the first and biggest of the six intermediate schools built with proceeds from a $2.4 million bond issue passed in 1923. By the end of its first year, the school was already overcrowded with 1600 students in a school built to accomodate 1200. It was added on to in 1968 and remodeled in 1966 and 1972. The school reopened in 2002 after extensive remodeling.
