ca. 1934. Interior of the Fifteen-Eighteen Cabaret at 1518 Pacific Avenue. The club was owned by Louie DiDent and featured "wine and dine" and "entertainment that is different." Photograph pictures a crowd of people drinking beer at tables and a woman entertainer on stage at the front of room. Waiters in white jackets serve the tables.

ca. 1934. A young hot rodder is pulled over in his fancy go-cart by a patrolman. The policeman writes him a speeding ticket in front of Thrifty Cut-Rate Drugs at 947 Broadway. The pair are surrounded by a group of kids, and some men, on their way to the Saturday morning Mickey Mouse Club at the Temple Theatre. Some of the children are carrying instruments and are possibly part of the Mickey Mouse Club Band. The racer is a promotional give away by the drug store. Thrifty had drug store locations at 947 Broadway, 914 Pacific Ave and 401 S. 11th.

ca. 1934. Mickey Mouse Club. Boy in a fancy go-cart surrounded by other boys and men in front of Virges Drug Store. Sign reads "On Our Way To The Mickey Mouse Club - Hamrick's Temple Theatre." Some of the boys are carrying musical instruments and are probably part of the Mickey Mouse Club Band. The go cart was the prize in a give away sponsored by "Thrifty Cut-Rate Drugs." In 1934, three drugstores consolidated to become Thrifty Cut-Rate Drugs. (filed with Argentum)

Mrs. Robert E. Evans, left, president of the Woman's Society of the First Methodist Church, showed a rare shell from her collection to Myrtle (Mrs. King) Beach, the wife of the church pastor. Mrs. Evans had spent many years collecting shells from all parts of the world, ranging from small single mollusks, like the shell of the common garden snail, to the rarest specimens from tropical waters. On December 14,1934, Mrs. Evans gave a descriptive talk about her collection at the church, including a display of many of her shells. (T. Times 12/15/1934, pg. 6)

ca. 1934. As Christmas Day 1934 neared, the basement of Tacoma lumberman J.T. Gregory's home at 1318 Division Ave. (now 1318 So. 4th St.) was converted into Santa's workshop. The head toymaker was Percy Quam, pictured, who lived with Mr. Gregory. Percy and his friends gave up their usual holiday revels to spend the evenings building doll cradles, rocking horses, toy trucks, tiny wheelbarrows and other toys for kids who otherwise would have a joyless Christmas. The more than 100 toys, new and freshly painted, were donated to the Elks Stocking Fillers. (T. Times 12/21/1934, pg. 9)

George and Mary Demich opened this "mom and pop" neighborhood grocery store in 1914 at the corner of North 45th and Orchard Street. The North 45th Street Grocery & Meat Market was ideally located on a streetcar line. Advertisements for Medosweet Ice Cream and Ghirardelli's Chocolate are prominently displayed in this 1934 photograph of the Demichs. The neighborhood market closed after George's death in 1958 and was demolished a few years later.

ca. 1934. Two men share a table in the "Ben Johnson Coffee Shoppe" in the Tacoma Hotel circa 1934. On the wall next to them is the saying "Here's Wishing Us All More Friends And Less Need Of Them." The Tacoma Hotel, built on the bluff overlooking Commencement Bay, received much acclaim befitting its elegant structure. It was destroyed by fire on October 17, 1935.

ca. 1934. Photograph is described in Richards' notes as "group at Rausch's Road House." However, associated pictures also show a sign on the building proclaiming that it is "Jay's Log Cabin, Dine & Dance." A group of people is seated in front of the log cabin. Group includes a young couple to the left of the seated row dressed alike in slacks, white shirts and sweaters and a woman in the standing row wearing a "Andre's Market" brown paper bag as a hat.

ca. 1934. Photograph identified in Richards' log book as "group at Rausch's Road House." Four people standing by door of log building with sign reading " Jay's Log Cabin, Dine & Dance" on the roof ridge and extending from the side of the structure. The two couples outside are possibly the proprieters. One man is dressed in a long apron, as if he has been or is planning to cook. The log cabin is located in what appears to be a rural location. For a closer view of these individuals in a group shot, see image #2.

ca. 1934. Henry Querrette working with handtool in his workshop. He is surrounded by supplies- lanterns, saws, wood and cans. He is wearing suspenders and smoking a pipe with a curved bowl. Querrette, also known as "Chips," was a carpenter and home builder. During the thirties, Better Homes & Gardens magazines featured him in a series of articles written by Alfred L. Gehri on such varied topics as architects in the building process, tools, restoring furniture and recipes from around the world.

ca. 1934. Henry Querrette in his rustic kitchen cooking hot cakes on a griddle. The photograph was most probably taken in Querrette's Hood Canal ranch. Querrette, also known as "Chips," is making his famous pancakes. In addition to careers as a sailor, cowboy, lumberjack and builder; Chips was also a wonderful cook. During his days at sea, Chips headed inland at every port to pick up new recipes. His pancake recipe originated in France. (Better Homes & Gardens, September 1934)
