ca. 1938. Nepean C. Garrison, prolific model ship builder, holds his replica model of the "Great Republic," a three-masted sailing ship, in this circa 1938 photograph. Mr. Garrison, originally from Nova Scotia, came to Tacoma about 1903. He was the master of a fishing schooner at age 15 and later spent time on deep water square-riggers. He landed ashore and worked in the carpentry and contracting fields for many years. The arrival of the Great Depression caused jobs to dry up and Mr. Garrison began to keep busy by carving and whittling model ships similar to those he had served on when young. His scale models of sailing vessels numbering about 30 became well-known and were exhibited in downtown businesses and elsewhere. His attention to detail is noted in such models as the "Flying Cloud," "Linnit of Boston," "Old Ironsides," and the "Beaver," which was the first steamship on the Pacific Ocean and seen on Puget Sound for 50 years. Mr. Garrison served his adopted country during WWll as a rigger in the shipyards.
