About 45 members of the Safe Streets Campaign picket outside a Summit area home 08/30/1989. Safe Streeters believe the owner of the Exeter Arms Apartments lives in the Summit area house. A large group of neighbors suspect crack activity in the apartments. The owner has been contacted by Safe Street volunteers and staff in an attempt to assist the owner in resolving this problem, but his lack of cooperation made it necessary for the picketing.

It's two days of food, music, booths, and combines many groups of differing Asian backgrounds including Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese, Thai et cetera. International Chess Master John Donaldson gives a lecture to the Tacoma Chess Club. Donaldson is the son of former City Manager Bill Donaldson, and also graduated from Stadium High School. Donaldson has achieved the highest ranking of any Tacoma chess player and was captain of the U.S. Olympic Chess Team.

The two were speakers at a press conference at Safe Streets Headquarters where the governor announced grants to communities fighting drugs. Carson, who used to be involved with drugs, said that now he helps young kids stay away from drugs. The laughter came when Carson said that he wants to do this work now, because in 5 or 6 years he'll be 25 and too old to relate to the young kids.

SEATTLE, Dec. 30--SETTLING IN SEATTLE--Newlyweds Elena Akhmilovskaya, former Russian chess player, and John Donaldson, the captain of the American chess team, are now living in Seattle following their secret wedding ceremony at the 28th Chess Olympiad in Greece last month. The couple are trying to get Soviet authorities to allow Akhmilovskaya's 7-year-old daughter, Dana, to come to the United States.
