Black Lives Matter Mural Project Collection

  • CAC3002

Includes oral histories, digital images, and event flyers related to the development and creation of a Black Lives Matter mural produced in Tollefson Plaza in 2022. The mural was created by artists Dionne Bonner, Kenya Adams, Gwen Jones, Charles Taylor, and Breeze and was a collaboration between the Human Rights Commission's Racial Justice and Equity Committee, the Tacoma Arts Commission, and the Tacoma Art Museum.

Sister's I

Measures four feet by four feet. The medium is oil paint and acrylic on wood. Dionne Bonner's description of the work is "[d]uring part of the COVID pandemic, I curated a virtual exhibit presented at the Tacoma Public Library, called Hilltop Stories Visual and Audio Reflections. I created eleven painting, and a narrative description of my family history. I designed community posters with quotes from 13 interviews, and collaborated with an artist, Whitney Brady, and his colleague to present audio stories for the exhibit. This painting is of my great-grandmother and her sister, who traveled to Washington from the east coast. Throughout the years our family witnessed their amazing bond. This exhibit celebrates the incredible ties my family, and many other families have to the Hilltop community".
