Dr. Hinton D. Jonez (back row, 2nd from left) holds the bottle of cognac that will go to the last survivor of the Past Commanders' Last Man Club of the Edward B. Rhodes Post No.2, American Legion. Each year the post membership feted the post commanders at a banquet. The banquet for November 1945 was held in the Army and Navy Room at the Hotel Winthrop. Labor was well represented in the Clean-up Tacoma Campaign in 1948. Twenty members of Painters' Union Local 64 (AFL) gave Tacoma's totem pole at 10th and A Streets a new look April 11 and kicked-off the campaign. The steel scaffolding needed to do the job was donated by Safeway Steel Scaffolding. Max Frolic with 27 of Tacoma's union musicians played during the kick-off ceremonies and painting. Miss Ackerman, also four Red Cross students, Red Cross Miss T. Four members of the Pierce County Junior Red Cross attended the national Red Cross convention in San Francisco. The Juniors met sequentially with the parent organization. This was the first time in ten years that the Red Cross Convention was held on the Pacific Coast. College of Puget Sound students were helping place nine brass plaques bearing the name of one of the fraternities and sororities, which have been active for the past twenty five years. The plaques are being placed by the Student Union Building. The students and college administrators participated in a special dedication just prior to the cement being poured. Several groups at Masonic Temple, Ivanhoe Commandry, Lorenzo Mansfield. A group of 20 members of the Knights Templar are wearing their handsome uniforms and plumed hats. The Knight Templar is the 10th degree and the highest rank of the York Rite. The (Masons) Knights Templar was founded in 1816 as a fraternal service organization for Master Masons. The order flourishes in the Unites States, where there were 300,000 members in 1994. Lodges are called Commanderies; states with three or more lodges form Grand Commanderies. Since "none but Christians can be admitted, consequently it cannot be considered strictly as a Masonic body." 40 et 8 Parade, Times, Sandegren. As part of the American Legion's 40 et 8 auxiliary's Goof Parade held August 26, 1948, the greenhorns who were to be initiated into the mysteries of the Bunyan tribe wore sackcloth fashions and showed a bit of leg. They have posed in front of the Lincolnshire Hotel at 903 Pacific Avenue and Ted B. Palmer Real Estate at 905 Pacific Avenue. (T.Times, 8/27/1948, p.1)

A large gathering of Royal Arch Masons met for the second year in a row at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the degree of Mark Masters to qualified members in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout the state attended the August, 1951, gathering which was sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44. Ceremonies were opened by the officers of the Sunset chapter #23, Chehalis, with Donald C. Rogers, state head of the order, and his officials in attendance. The Mark Masters degree is built upon a legendary incident which took place during the quarrying of stone for the building of King Solomon's temple. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

The Pi Phi Mothers Club sponsored a reception honoring the new members. Pi Beta Phi was the first national sorority at the College of Puget Sound; it absorbed local sorority Kappa Sigma Theta in September, 1948. The C.P.S. chapter was the 94th in the nation and born the title of Washington Gamma. Scottish Rite group in the Corinthian room of the Masonic Temple. A branch of the Freemasons, this group has its roots not in Scotland, but in France. Its title is in honor of Scottish Masons who fled to France after the Jacobite Rebellion failed in 1715. The group was organized in the U.S. in 1801 and membership is available to those obtaining the rank of Master Mason. The rite consists on 32 degrees plus an honorary 33rd degree & each degree costs about $150 (in 1978.) The Scottish Rite is one of the paths to becoming a Shriner. The exterior of "The Northwesterner", the model display home for the third annual Home Show built by the Tacoma Master Builders. The design for the home was an adaptation of Spokane architect Bruce Walker's design that won first award in home design competition. The bathroom in "The Northwesterner" makes use of space economically. A tub with shower is fitted in on the left next to the toilet. A sink with a small counter also provides storage space below and a drawer on the right. A goose-neck lamp provides lighting over the sink as well as a window covered with patterned glass for privacy. Tile has been used on the floor and the walls. TPL-7643

A small bedroom in "The Northwesterner" provides a wall of storage with closets, drawers and covered cubby holes above. The exterior and interior of the closets and cabinets are painted a light color and the two adjacent walls are painted a dark color. A single bed is set against the wall with windows covered with short, boldly patterned drapes. An easy chair sits against the near wall. TPL-7639

These women are forty of the 170 housewives who completed Red Cross certificates in home nursing to be able to care for the sick in their own homes as part of defense in emergency. Names are listed in the newspaper. The American Red Cross was also 70 years old in May 1951. They reported that $1,000,000,000 had been spent at home and overseas in the 50 years since its first report to Congress.
