Several homes under construction, Briggs Construction Co., Mr. Spillman. H.A. Briggs was president of Briggs Construction Company, Jack N. Briggs was vice president and Mrs. Ruth D. Briggs was secretary-treasurer. Their offices were at 1107 A Street. This view shows a new neighborhood of one-story, single family homes built to meet the expanding housing market. Briggs Construction Company was considered on the the Northwest's most progressive firms. They held open an open house for prospective buyers on August 7, 1949, at recently completed units in the Parkland and Fairmount Additions in Tacoma. (TNT, 8/7/1949, p.A-12)

Several homes under construction, Briggs Construction Co., Mr. Spillman. A residential street with a row of newly constructed one-story, single family homes is shown. The front yards have new lawns started but few other plants. Two girls are having fun skating on the smooth sidewalk. The Briggs Construction Company had completed 64 homes in the Fairmount Park Addition and 38 in the Parkland Addition. These homes provided every convenience and were conventionally built with concrete foundations, 2'x8" Douglas Fir flooring joists, oak flooring, pitched roofs with 210 pound thick butt asphalt shingles. Cascade Pole Co., Mr. Bowman. A man is tightening the cables holding the nearly 40 utility poles to the trailer of this truck. The poles have been treated with creosote, also manufactured at Cascade Pole, to increase their life as utility poles. Chas. E. Newbury of Tacoma, Washington, is painted on the door of the cab.

Forrest M. LaSuer, secretary of the Tacoma Moose Lodge, won a membership drive contest in June 1949. Harold Jordan, secretary of the Kelso-Longview Moose Lodge, lost the contest and was required to push LaSuer in a wheelbarrow, wearing a feed-sack dress with bonnet. LaSuer enjoyed the ride - he is wearing his own bonnet and night shirt, is holding a baby bottle and smoking a cigar. Jordan pushed the triumphant LaSuer past the Moose Lodge quarters at 737 Commerce St. (7/5/1949, p.2)

Barbara Henricksen-Robert E. Kuehnoel. Barbara Henrickson is wearing her bridal gown of ivory satin, with short-sleeves, and a net neckline decorated with appliqued roses. Her veil flows from the back of a cap beaded with a double strand of pearls. She is wearing a long strand of pearls wrapped twice around her neck and tied in a knot, and elbow length gloves. She holds a bouquet of closely gathered roses surrounded by netting and lace. She smiles past the camera, into the future. She and Robert E. Western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry visits patients at Cushman Hospital on July 15, 1949. Known as the Cushman Indian Hospital, it had originally housed the Puyallup Indian School. It provided care for Northwest Indian tribal members, especially in the field of tuberculosis. Mr. Autry, dressed in his trademark white hat, smiles at two adult male patients. He had also paid a visit to the children's ward that day. Mr. Autry would be appearing in a Western variety show at Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of the College of Puget Sound later that evening. Home portrait of Roy V. Stratton family, Roy V. Stratton. Roy and his wife, Florence, are walking across the lawn with their two sons in this photograph from June of 1949. Their two-story brick, tudor-style home is behind them. Flowers are blooming in window boxes on both the first and second stories. Roy Stratton was president of Crawford Door Sales, manufacturers of garage doors.

Harry Hartz (second from left), former automobile racing champion who was a traffic safety specialist at this time, was in Tacoma visiting officials interested in safety. He drove the 1949 Studebaker half-ton pickup truck from Puget Sound to the Great Lakes in a 8,000-mile safety crusade. He was welcomed by, L-R, Chief of Police Robert Marshall, James M. Gilchrist of the Allen Motor Company, Public Safety Commissioner Robert Temme, and A.E. Mulligan of the A.E. Mulligan Company. A map of the United States is displayed in the back of the pickup with the name Studebaker spelled out on it. A sign on the door of the cab says, "Studebaker, Writes its Name Across the Nation". In April of 1950 Nezzer J. "Nez" DuCharme (far right) took over the service station at 1548 Pacific Avenue and opened a new Mobiloil Station. His new station was 10 blocks north of the station that he opened just after WWII at 2601 Pacific. Helping to man the pumps were: (l to r) Bud DuCharme, Bob Morgan and Bob Bender, advertised as the "Busy B's." The station sold a full line of Mobil products including gas, tires, tubes, batteries, accessories. The "Busy Bs" also did tire repairs, battery charging, and car washing and polishing with pick up and delivery service. (Ad TNT 4/14/1950, pg. 27)

Another bathroom was included in the new second-story addition to Verne Carlson's residence. One of his daughters is preparing to brush her teeth in this June, 1950 photograph. The walls are painted a light color and the floor has been covered with alternating colors of linoleum tile.
