The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge Number 174 members were visiting the Spokane Elks for a week long visit in October of 1949. The Tacoma delegation would be greeted at the train station by a band; they would then participate in a Spokane parade, followed by a dancing and vaudeville show at the Spokane clubhouse (T.N.T., 10/20/49, p. 13).

The Moose Lodge sponsored a youth accordion band open to anyone 21 years or younger. A. Kieszling was the conductor of the band as well as being a musician and music teacher in Tacoma. He is seen in the upper right in a black suit. This group includes snare and base drummers and several other percussion players. One boy on the right is holding an electric guitar.

ca. 1950. Dr. O. Harry Schrader, Managing Director of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association from 1949-1952. Dr. Schrader was serving on the faculty of the University of Washington when he accepted the post as Director. He was a highly trained forester and wood technologist who made many contributions to the plywood industry, most in the technical fields. He expanded the research foundation, which was financed by the mills through the Association and was responsible for developing new products and uses for fir plywood. He increased the number of field promotion representatives from 4 to 15. He encouraged the research of Dave Countryman, of the DFPA's laboratory staff, into the properties, and therefore, the limitations of plywood as a building material. In mid 1952, Dr. Schrader left the DFPA for a position with U.S. Plywood Corp. in Seattle. (" The Plywood Age" by Robert M. Cour)

Sepic's first store was originally located on South 17th Street and Tacoma Avenue South, in 1945 the brothers purchased the K Street property and started building their new store location. Sepic Electric Company now has new modern quarters; they offer the highest quality known brand furniture. The company's new building has a durable concrete foundation and three times more space than the previous location. Esther Evangeline Ohlson wore a medieval style gown in deep chartreuse green velvet with a matching hat. Mrs. Mamie Jacobs was installed as president of the Tacoma Zonta Club at their June 1949 meeting held at the home of Mrs. Robert Putnam in Steilacoom. In October 1949 Zonta International celebrated its 30th anniversary and the Tacoma chapter observed their 21st anniversary. Horluck's was having their grand opening and would offer free ice cream and coffee to their customers. Horluck's was located in the Pacific First Federal Building at South 11th Street and Pacific Avenue. Horluck's was owned by Aldrich Fox and Lloyd Knutsen, well known dairy and fountain men; Jack Fox would be the restaurant's manager. Columbia Breweries, manufacturers of Alt Heidelberg and Columbia Ale, expanded and modernized their brewing facilities and offices once again starting in 1949. This view shows the Tacoma plant and railroad siding that allowed freight trains easy access for shipping Columbia Brewery products. Packaged beer was conveyed from the bottle shop to the shipping depot through an elevated bridge which crossed the railroad yards. (TNT, 1/8/1952, p.B-7)

The K Street Club at 1111 So. K Street in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood, was owned and operated by John J. Hafsos and Lawrence J. Corvari. This exterior view of the front of the building clearly shows their business signs, including a neon Olympia beer sign and a sign that says "Booths for Ladies". The photograph was ordered by the Washington State Liquor Board in October of 1949, probably for a renewal of their liquor license. TPL-5882
