Four couples are seen square dancing in Jason Lee Junior High School's gym in February of 1949. Beginning at left and working around the wheel are: Sandra Burrows and Jay Grimstead, Sara Lovell and Bob Lang, Pat Holmes and Billy Redfield, and Shirley Boyle and Fred Thomas. They were dancing to the music of Bob Hager's records. Folk dancing gained wider interest among Tacoma's schools during the late 1940's. James Stack, USA retired, on his retirement as chairman of the Citizens Armed Forces committee. C.J. Quill of the Totem Greeters presented Col. Stack with a small totem pole. Col. Ed Cook at N.P. Bank Note Co. for 25 Years, Times, Buzz. Edwin G. Cook was a lithographer with North Pacific Bank Note Company. Edwin G. Cook lived in Tacoma from 1907 until 1964, the year he retired from the North Pacific Bank Note Co. After he retired, he moved to Vancouver, WA where he died on January 10, 1970.

There's nothing wrong with this chest, it's been x-rayed says Dave Schrader to Bill Courtney, employees at Permanente Metals Corp. As part of a U.S. Public Health Service campaign, all the employees at the Kaiser Aluminum plant in Tacoma received chest x-rays in 1949. In February of 1949, Permanente employed over 3,600 men in their three Washington plants with a combined payroll exceeding $12 million. The women of the Missionary Council of the Assembly of God met once a week in 1949 in the basement of the home of Mrs. George Phill to sew, mend clothing and make quilts to be distributed to the needy in Europe and the Orient. Their minister, Rev. Dwight McLaughlin, planned to travel to Germany at the end of February and would distribute the women's work at that time. The large group of unidentified ladies are busy making warm and useful quilts (at right) and refurbishing piles of used clothing so that they looked good as new. Since organizing one year earlier they had already sent 76 large quilts, 43 baby quilts and 139 children's garments to the needy in the Orient. (TNT 2-6-49, A-3)

Port of Tacoma piers fire. A blaze of fire swept along the Port of Tacoma open storage Pier 1 for 400 of its 1,200 feet. Men from the nearby U.S. Naval Station assisted Tacoma firemen and sailors who removed some of the finished lumber, ties and logs which covered a large area of the pier. (T. Daffodil Queen and Princesses, Times, Sandy. Marcia Keefe, 16-year-old junior from Lincoln High School, was chosen to be one of the two princesses of the Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival for 1949. She is pictured above, carrying a large bouquet of daffodils, with the other 22 Lincoln contestants whose names are listed in a News Tribune article dated February 13, 1949. Marcia, the daughter of the R.E. Keefes of 1676 So. 40th St., saw nursing in her future after completing her education. Mary Jean Gropper of Puyallup was selected as queen of the festival. Mary Elizabeth Morton, an attorney with the Tacoma firm of Dorsey, Ruff and Morton, was photographed trying on straw hats at the Rhodes Brothers Department Store, 950 Broadway, for the Spring Fashions section of the March 6, 1949 Tacoma Times. Tacoma Boat Building Company.The Virginia R, a new tuna clipper built by the Tacoma Boat Building Company for Captain Manuel Ribiero, was completed January 29, 1949. This elevated view shows the 108' x 26' x 13.6" fishing boat on her sea trials. A covered bait deck is shown on her stern. She holds his hands as they step out. The News Tribune listed them as the oldest and youngest skaters in current classes at the skating rink. Katherine Nelson was 60 and Bob Hamlet was three. Shirley has teasingly wrapped a thick white sock around Robert's right hand. Robert was a student at Stewart Jr. High while Phyllis attended Gray Jr. High. Mystery Farm Winner, Mrs. O.H. Stevenson, Times, Frank Herbert. Mrs. O.H. Stevenson was the happy winner of the Tacoma Sunday Times "farm identification" contest. She is seen here accepting a cyprus azureum plant from L.H. McGuire, superintendent of Puget Sound Nursery and Garden Shop at 9201 Pacific Avenue. Mrs. Stevenson chose the plant from 10 acres of stock maintained at the nursery, known as "where you see the little house". Tribune, Board Meeting of Women of Rotary, Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Women of Rotary were planning their annual dinner dance for their husbands. The dance party was held February 24, 1949, at The Towers on Sixth Avenue with a sparkling color note of red and white. The table centerpieces consisted of large red ribbon bows fashioned into flowers with fuzzy button-topped stamens against green leaves. In the tag dance, ladies were tagged by means of red hatchets and in the prize waltz, black-mustached beaus danced with belles wearing hand-made bonnets of white and red. Girl Alone, woman fearful of being alone on city streets at night, Times, Earl Floathe. A woman stands alone on a snowy evening near the streetlight on I Street South. Girl Alone, woman fearful of being alone on city streets at night, Times, Earl Floathe. The Tacoma Times published an article telling girls and women how they could protect themselves when they were out alone at night. Several photographs accompanied the article showing the right things to do such as, "Don't walk alone through parks or empty lots". Horse shoeing at Woodbrook Riding Academy, Times, Prescott. One man holds the reins of a horse while Al Reizner fashions a horseshoe with a hammer at a portable anvil.
