On March 17, 1941, William F. Porter (center), a member of the Boilermakers' union employed at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyard, bought five tickets from Donna Mae Jaden for a fund raising concert being given in Tacoma. The "On to Spokane" concert was being given to raise money to send Tacoma school musicians to the National Music Educators conference being held in Spokane at the end of the month. Oscar Williams (left) was chairman of the Young Men's Business Club committee sponsoring the concert. Donna Jaden, a member of the Stadium H.S. Girl's Glee Club, became the movie actress Janis Paige. Art Exhibit in Washington Building. On November 20, 1940, Tacoma's art community was preparing for National Art Week, November 25-December 1st, with an art exhibit in the Washington Building. Alfred Banner, art teacher from Stadium High School and Robert Drummond of the College of Puget Sound examine water color entries to be exhibited. Titus Motor's gift for the first born baby in Tacoma in 1941 was a ride home for mother and child in a 1941 Super Deluxe Ford. The 9 pound 3 ounce baby boy arrived at 12:08 a.m. at the County Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Parham of 6002 So. Mason making them winners of the Tacoma News Tribune Stork Derby for 1941.

Leon Titus, the president of the Titus Motor Company (kneeling, 3rd from left), and his sales crew used specially made "yardsticks" to measure a brand new 1941 Ford V-8 in December of 1940. The "yardsticks" are considerably more than 36 inches long. The 1941 model was claimed by Ford to be the biggest car in its price class. An unidentified bank employee is surrounded by a bevy of beautiful co-workers at the National Bank of Washington company party held October 19, 1940 at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. The bank was celebrating its 55th anniversary in business. The party was attended by 200 officers and employees from the Tacoma main branch and all surrounding branch offices.

Players are, top to bottom, Harry Lang, Marty North, Earl Platt, Sig Sigurdson and Marv Harshman. Mr. Harshman later had a distinguished 40 year career as a basketball coach; coaching winning teams at Pacific Lutheran, Washington State and the University of Washington. This picture ran in the Tacoma Times with overlays so that the goal became the 1941 Winko Hoop Crown and the players passed the ball up a timeline indicating games that needed to be won. (T. On February 1, 1941, Gloria Duncan (seated center) reigned as the Queen of the 3rd annual Gold and Green Ball given by the Lincoln Ward of the Latter Day Saints Church. The formal dance was sponsored by the Mutual Improvement Association of the Church and held at the Fern Hill Masonic Temple at 84th and Park. The event was named for the colors of the Association and was the social event of the winter season. Her Matron of Honor was Penelope Moore and her attendants (order unknown) were Maxine Thayne, Thelma Thompson, Barbara Magnuson, Jean Orth and Peggy Dickson. Charles Neagle was the Queen's escort and Patrick Moore was the escort for the Matron of Honor. Anna Roosevelt Boettiger (daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt) with her son Curtis Dall. Mrs. Boettiger was the sponsor for the ship " Cape Alva," launch #1 at Seattle-Tacoma Shipyards. The merchant ship was christened on August 1, 1940, with Governor Clarence Martin and Tacoma Mayor Harry P. Cain in attendance. The vessel was 416 feet long, 37 feet deep with a 60-foot beam. As more people sought to own their own automobiles, the staff of Manley Motor Co., 956-58 Fawcett Ave., grew in the same proportion. The president of the company was Harry R. Manley. They were the authorized dealers for Overland, Willys-Knight and Whippet automobiles. Pictured in the top row, left to right in May of 1927, are Harry Manley, Dolly Wescott, Lloyd Munter, J.B. In June of 1927, Seattlite and frequent Tacoma visitor Esther Landstrom (in coat) was pictured with her new Willys-Knight 70-A coupe in front of the First Presbyterian Church at 20 Tacoma Avenue South. Her small dog stands on the running board. Her friend Dolly Wescott, a bookkeeper at Manley Motors, was at the wheel. Mrs. Landstrom had recently purchased her car from Manley Motor Company, 956-58 Fawcett Avenue, in Tacoma. Dr. Edward H. Todd, president of the College of Puget Sound, sits at his roll top desk studying papers. Dr. Todd was the President of CPS for 29 years, from 1913- 1942. The men's dormitory was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948.

ca. 1927. College of Puget Sound Football, first team, circa 1927. Twenty-six players and two coaches sitting on bleachers. In 1927, the College of Puget Sound had only one athletic director and he coached all the sports teams. Clyde Wesley Hubbard was new, having arrived at the college in 1926, but he pushed his team to finish second in the conference. He was assisted by former Logger star Lynn Wright and A.A. Denman. Several unidentified members of Tacoma's Chamber of Commerce paid a visit to the Danish motorship "Tacoma" when she docked at the Defiance Lumber Mill on her maiden voyage January 14, 1927. They posed with members of the crew for this portrait. The "Tacoma" was built in Copenhagen for the Orient Steamship Company of Copenhagen. She was loading Northwest lumber enroute to Japan. She was 400 feet in length with a beam of 55 feet. She ran under the power of two diesel engines with a crew of 15 officers and 34 crewmen. (TNT 1/14/1927, pg. 20) (WSHS)
