The mints were one ounce and advertised as, "a giant chocolate mint, soft, creamy-cool center, rich dark chocolate coating - the most popular mint bar in the West". The women each wear coverings over their hair and aprons. After the end of the war Brown & Haley began making every kind of candy imaginable: peppermint sticks, lemon drops, gum drops, taffy chews, chocolate bars, fudges and caramels. After 1972 they began to specialize in three basic product lines: Almond Roca, Mountain Bars and boxed chocolates. As of 1989 Brown & Haley was the largest exporter of candy in America. This garbage truck has sides that can be lowered for adding new materials and the back doors open wide when the truck is ready to lift and dump the load.

Two console models, one in a dark wood cabinet and one in light wood, are seen on the left. Smaller players flank an easy chair; and portable players and radios are lined up on shelves. Westinghouse referred to the popularity of radio thrillers aired at that time in their advertisements for their radios, "It's a crime not to hear it" and "Listen to the evidence, your ear will prove it."

Standard Oil Co. started doing business in Tacoma in 1886, by shipping oil from Cleveland, Ohio to Tacoma in box and tank cars. Five unidentified employees of the Burson Beverage Company posed outside the company's building at 3861 Center Street on May 19,1947. Hoping to help satisfy the thirst of Tacoma's returning veterans and their families, William A. Morrison and Charles R. Burque started the Burson Beverage Co. in 1945. They mixed and delivered Sun Ray Orange, Dr. Swett's Root Beer and Shasta Mixers.

Cutting a 1,000 pound cake at Big Bear Store, Big Bear Store, Don Taylor. A five-tier cake stands next to a towering display of cake mix inside the Big Bear Store on February 17, 1949. A teddy bear sits on top of the enormous cake made with Swans Down Instant cake mix. The Big Bear grocery store was celebrating its first anniversary with many promotions including free Wood's coffee and slices of this enormous cake. The cake was 5-ft. by 8-ft. at its base and rose to a height of over 5 1/2 feet. Even more enticing to shoppers was the chance to win valuable prizes--inside the cake were encapsuled prize slips which entitled winners to a $400 television set, free coffee makers and free shopping bags full of groceries from Big Bear. Mystery Farm Winner, Mrs. O.H. Stevenson, Times, Frank Herbert. Mrs. O.H. Stevenson was the happy winner of the Tacoma Sunday Times "farm identification" contest. She is seen here accepting a cyprus azureum plant from L.H. McGuire, superintendent of Puget Sound Nursery and Garden Shop at 9201 Pacific Avenue. Mrs. Stevenson chose the plant from 10 acres of stock maintained at the nursery, known as "where you see the little house". The Stevensons had a 20 acre farm on Route 9, Orchard Road, where they raised some young stock and had laying hens. (T.Times, 2/13/1949, p.18)

The S.H. Kress & Co. store in Tacoma, 934 Broadway, advertised fresh, home-made, butter cream fudge for 30 cents per one-half pound for Valentines Day 1949. In their front window, heart shapes and stripes were made of suckers on a continuous tape. Several large pieces of fudge spelled out the name "Kress," and other candies were made into bouquets at the top and near the edges of the display. S. H. Kress closed their store on Broadway in 1972. A view from the back of the common office area shows the entry to the building on one of the exterior corners. The entry way has been walled with glass-block to let available light into the offices. This photograph of the Tacoma Drug Company warehouse at 1815 East D Street on Tacoma's tideflats was taken in February of 1949 shortly after the warehouse was completed; the vast area is crowded with a multitude of tables and boxes, including Bayer and Bromo Seltzer products. The Tacoma Drug Company was founded in 1925 by Chis F. Osmers. By 1949 the company had become one of the largest distributors of pharmaceutical products on the Pacific Coast. Their warehouse incorporated the latest technology so that orders could be filled quickly and efficiently. In 1951, under the corporate leadership of Fred C. Osmers, Tacoma Drug became part of the Northwest Drug Company; in 1984 the company was sold to Pay n' Save.
