Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. Gathered around Tacoma's historic totem pole at 10th and A St. in this picture from November of 1951 are several of the principals in the fifth annual "Totem Bowl" football game which brings together the College of Puget Sound (UPS) and Pacific Lutheran College (PLU) teams Saturday November 10th in the Lincoln Bowl. Left to right are Co-Captains Don Murdock and Bob Demko of the Puget Sound squad; Eileen McArthur, C.P.S. yell queen; Bob Nielsen, P.L.C. Captain, and Jack Enochs, P.L.C. yell king. Miss McArthur and Enochs led student body groups from the two schools in a joint pep rally at the totem pole on Friday Nov. 9th. The Logger and Lute squads will be competing for the Tacoma Young Men's Business club "Totem Pole" trophy, an exact replica of the pole at 10th and A.

The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T. Dr. Edward H. Todd, president of the College of Puget Sound, sits at his roll top desk studying papers. Dr. Todd was the President of CPS for 29 years, from 1913- 1942. The men's dormitory was named after Dr. Todd when it was built in 1948.

ca. 1927. College of Puget Sound Football, first team, circa 1927. Twenty-six players and two coaches sitting on bleachers. In 1927, the College of Puget Sound had only one athletic director and he coached all the sports teams. Clyde Wesley Hubbard was new, having arrived at the college in 1926, but he pushed his team to finish second in the conference. He was assisted by former Logger star Lynn Wright and A.A. Denman. The Independents at the College of Puget Sound were getting ready for their first big social of the year, a "Sadie Hawkins Day" dance on Saturday November 8th, 1941, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 6th and Steele. The climax would be the selection and shotgun wedding of Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae. Candidates for the groom are, left, Jim Angus and Harris Martin; the tall gentleman is Larry Henderson, master of ceremonies and candidates for the not-so-blushing bride are Ruth Sonneman and Annabel Miller. On June 6, 1942, commencement exercises were held at Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. Eighty-nine degrees were being awarded, including an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Government to Governor Arthur B. Langlie. He was pictured shaking hands at the exercises with an unidentified man. Rev. Stanley G. Logan was also awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity. (T. Times 6/6/1942, pg. 1)

Pacific Lutheran College football team, players and coaches. Unidentified coach is believed to be Philip G. Strombo, who succeeded Cliff Olsen as the new director of athletics at PLC in the fall of 1942. Strombo, at 41, was a former North Dakota University player and had coached in North Dakota and Oregon.

On February 6, 1950, Pacific Lutheran College students gaily tossed their shoes off at the door to enjoy the Stocking Shuffle Dance in the gymnasium. Rhoda Young (right), head of the women's physical education department, was on hand to judge most holey, colorful and biggest pairs of socks. Among the finalists in the competition were Walter Masters, Raymond Green and Florence Brandstetter. The prize for the winners was, appropriately, three new pairs of socks. On July 19, 1951, workmen were cutting and installing one-inch blankets of insulation in the band room at the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. The J-M system of sound isolation was being used to control sound waves which are transmitted by structural vibration. Light weight and specially constructed floors, walls and ceilings were entirely divorced from the building structure by means of felted isolators. The floating interior had no rigid contact with the outer solid structure of the building. The felt cushioned isolators took up the sound impulses which otherwise would be transmitted throughout the structure. (TNT, 7/22/1951, p.C-12)
