Tacoma is treated to a parade on May 6, 1938 when Knights Templar from all over the state gathered here for the 51st Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. Unit of marching men in traditional dress uniforms with swords and plumed hats parade up 13th Street and turn north on Broadway.

Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

On December 3rd, 1938, The Golden Jubilee was brought to a close with a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, where 600 Shriners from 12 temples gathered to commemorate the founding of Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Honored were the "Old Timers," those who were members before 1900 and helped to grow the membership from 8 to the current 2,000. Crippen was running a hotly contested campaign against incumbent County Prosecutor Harry H. Johnston. Johnston claimed that he had taken on organized crime in Tacoma, driving out gambling, closing taverns on Sunday and making Tacoma safer for the average Joe. "Lady Luck" punch board on counter with tray of glasses and liquor bottles beside it. In 1938, Samuel Crippen was running a no holds barred campaign against incumbent Harry H. Johnston as County Attorney. The aggressive young Tacoma lawyer was hotly disputing Johnston's claim that he has driven out slot machines and gambling from Tacoma. (T. C.M.T.C. awards ceremonies. Governor Clarence D. Martin with a group of Army officers observe the Citizens Military Training Camp awards program at Fort Lewis. Awards for civil, military and athletic excellence were presented at the conclusion of the annual encampment of citizen soldiers. Mrs. Kate Stevens Bates, youngest daughter and only survivor of Washington Territory's first governor, Isaac Stevens, sits at the piano at her home in Olympia on March 14, 1939. She was only a few months old when the family arrived in Olympia. Brother Hazard Stevens built Bates' home. She is the wife of James H.S. Bates. (T. Times 3/14/1939, p. 1)

Dancer Martha Graham from photographer Turner Richards' 1938 stock file. The famous dancer appeared at Jason Lee Auditorium at the invitation of the Tacoma Junior League on April 1, 1937. She and her modern dance troupe of 12 were met with enthusiasm by local residents. Proceeds from Miss Graham's appearance went to the Junior League's Well Baby Clinic project at the county hospital. Junia Todd Hallen sitting at small writing desk on February 14, 1939, preparing a speech for the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority entitled "Broadway (Tacoma) Looks at Broadway (New York.)" Over 300 women attended the "tea talk" which included a review of current and recent New York plays, as well as a discussion of the founding of the new producing group, the Playwrights' Production Co. Mrs. Hallen was the daughter of former College of Puget Sound president Edward H. Todd. After a career that included social work, school teaching, book reviewing and lecturing, she passed away at age 60 in October of 1956. Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Murrey render first-aid to an unidentified young man who helped save some of their furnishings from the devastating fire that swept through Fife Corners on May 9, 1935. The 30 mph winds from the southwest carried burning shingles from one building to another in the small community, damaging nearly twenty homes and businesses. Residents fought the fires with old-fashioned bucket brigades and soaked gunny sacks as fire fighting equipment and a ready water supply were not available. Weary and stunned residents of Fife Corners check out the remnants of homes and businesses demolished by fire on May 9, 1935. The air is still thick with smoke as eight buildings were destroyed and many others damaged by the fire which was carried by strong winds. Although residents and volunteers tried their best, and managed to save or minimize damage to some buildings, their efforts were hampered by lack of water and fire fighting equipment. Building by McKim, Mead and White, Architects, New York City. The Totem Pole was commissioned by W.F. Sheard and Chester Thorne and presented to the city in 1903.
